The savings amounting to $117 million this year alone, $300,000 a day or some $12,800 an hour will be used to lower the agency's $26.7 billion in total debt TVA embarked on an aggressive schedule last year to halve the debt by 2007.

TVA Chairman Craven Crowell said the FFB debt refinancing should accelerate that schedule, though it is unclear by how much. TVA has been trying for years to win support for refinancing the FFB debt. The U.S. Treasury consistently opposed the move, while allowing other agencies and even foreign governments to repay ahead of schedule. An effort this year by the TVA Congressional Caucus, led by Sens.
