THE TENNESSEAN Sunday. March 24 l96 7B 'Honky-Tonk Angel' songwriter J.D. Miller, 73, dies CROWLEY, La. (AP) J.D. Miller, whose song It Wasn't God Who Made Itonky-Tonk Angels made Kitty Wells country music's first female superstar died yesterday at a hospital in Lafayette.

He was 73, and died of complications from recent quadruple bypass surgery, said Freddie Pate, a studio musician at Miller's MTE Studios in Crowley, where Miller had lived since he was a boy. Grand Ole Opry member Jimmy Newman and Cajun fiddler Doug Kershaw got their starts at MTE, which also recorded part of Paul Simon's Graccland album. Miller's llonky-Tonk Angels opened the way for women to set themes and to perform on their own rather than as members of singing families. Wells' classic recording was the first No. 1 song and million-seller by a female vocalist.

It was a retort to Hank Thompson's 1952 hit, The Wild Side of Life. The chorus to Thompson's song is: didn't know God made honkv-tonk angels I might have known you'd never make a wife You gave up the only one that ever loved you And went back to the wild side of life. Miller heard it on his car radio, pulled to the side of the road, and started writing an answer It wasn't God who made honky- tonk angels As you wrote in the words of your song Too many times married men think they're still single That has caused many a good girl to go wrong. The Decca label asked Wells, who had just signed with Decca after recording religious songs for RCA, to record it She agreed, expecting only the $125 studio fee from that session on May 5, 1952. Men had dominated performance and viewpoint in country music.

Miller's song opened the door for other female soloists and for songs like Loretta Lynn's Fist City and The Pill. The song was far from his only contribution to the music Industry. "He's been recording rhythm and blues artists here in Louisiana, and Cajun artists, since the early '50s. He was very instrumental in Louisiana blues, and Louisiana music Everybody who got a start probabjy got it from Pate said. Miller was an early manager for Lefty Frizzell; Miller's song Cry, Cry, Darlin' recently was recorded by Ricky Skaggs, and his I Hear You Knockin' is on Dwight Yoak-am's 1988 album.

He is survived by his wife, Georgia Miller, a daughter, four sons, and 10 grandchildren. The funeral Is tentatively scheduled for tomorrow. 1 vices 1 1 a.m. Tuesday, Crump (Tenn.) Cemetery. High Funeral Home, McMinnville, In charge.
