"She's not going to suffer," Gov. Don Sundquist said of his 6-month-old first grandchild yesterday as he hosted several hundred Middle Tennesseans during the mansion's first Christmas open house since his inauguration in 1995.

"IVe already bought her a couple of things a snow suit so she'll be warm when she gets here and that little lamb under her tree in the other room." Sundquist and first lady Martha greeted visitors and posed for photos in front of a stately tree in the mansion's formal living room. The grant money will be used to establish an HIVAIDS education and prevention course for African-American pre-health professionals at Fisk and will enable them to visit area schools to discuss the virus and help remove barriers that have impeded prevention and intervention messages.

Potter retires: K.C Potter, who first came to Vanderbilt as a law student in 1961 and spent a total of 33 years at the school, including two decades as the university's chief housing and conduct officer, announced last week that he will retire at the end of this academic year. He said he plans to retire to his Hickman County farm. "Dean Potter will be sorely missed, but his legacy will affect Vanderbilt students for years to come because K.C. has established the highest standards of care and concern for each student," said Jo-han Madson, associate provost and dean of students. As head of judicial affairs, Potter is the chief arbiter of the school's judicial system, which addresses matters of student conduct Bridge Award: Robert Koff, vice president of the Danforth Foundation, will receive the 1997 Bridge Award from the Vanderbilt Institute for Public Policy Studies today.

Koff will be honored for his leadership in linking good practice to policy for children and families. Koff has worked on issues of education policy, planning and assessment in K-12 education, higher education and medicine. He was a professor and administrator at both Stanford University and the State University of New York at Albany. He also served on the New York State Council on Children and Youth and chaired the New York State Educational Conference Board, before joining the Danforth Foundation in 1992.
