MUSIC CITY: ENTERTAINMENT Ennnnmr I ODAY SHOT SPOTS Calendar Jot Fabares, TV's where it's at Iff; a- I it From 'Donna Reed' to actress has series in her blood By KEN BECK Staff Writer Shelley Fabares confesses she has an addiction to TV as in TV series. That's not a bad thing, since she is part of Hollywood's rare breed, an actress who has seldom been unemployed. She's been a working pro in TV and film since the age of 4, including six TV shows. "If I had my choice, I would like to do another series. I really like the constancy of television.

It's a hard schedule but I like that schedule," said Fabares, who most recently starred as Christine Armstrong, wife of Craig T. Nelson's character, on ABC's long-running Coach, a sitcom that called it quits last year after nine seasons. That's a span of nearly 40 years since her role as teen-ager Mary Stone on The Donna Reed Show in 1958. Fabares learned her craft from one of the best, the late Donna Reed. "The Donna Reed Show was an incredibly important part of my life.

At 14)4 Donna Reed was my second mother. She became one of my best friends. I consider it an honor being Donna's daughter on that show." Fabares continues to pay tribute to her role model by serving at the Donna Reed Festival each June in Reed's hometown of Dennison, Iowa, where professional actors, directors and writers hold workshops. One of the incidental benefits from her first TV series was a hit song, Johnny Angel, which Fabares really did not want to record. "I was so terrified.

I told the producer of the show that this was a very good idea, but 'I cant do it, I can't Fabares went into the studio anyway, and Teen Angel became a million seller. "I have people who still deeply, passionately love that song, and remember it That's really extraordinary to have a place in people's Entertainment Our Picks The scene at the Bluebird Cafe tonight may recall a TV ad the one where cowboys complain that their salsa "is made in NEEW York City." Well, the music of the folkold country duo Y'ALL is made in New York City members James Dean Jay Byrd and Steven Cheslik-De-Meyer live there, having located to the Big Apple from Texas and Indiana. But when the lads sing their song God Bless New York City (My Big Apple Pie), the sound is pure hillbilly, even if they're talking about getting bushwhacked by switchblade-wielding thugs. By the way, Jay Byrd usually performs in a dress. Hmmmmm.

ALL are part of the Bluebird Folk Festival, a two-day event that concludes tonight. Also performing are the sweet-voiced Bums Sisters, whose tunes range frpm such giddy ditties as Da77ce Upon This Earth, to brooding stoiy songs such as Johnny Got a Gun. Here's the lineup: Y'ALL, Richard Berman, Terr! Allard, Hugh Blu-menfeld, James Keelaghan and Karen Pernick, 6:45 p.m.; Karen Savoca, Chuck Brodsky, Greg Greenway, the Burns Sisters, Ray Wylie Hubbard and SeskliV CarothersCheevers, 9:30 p.m., $7. What is Songmania, that semi-regular gig at Zanies? It's an event in which singer-songwriters perform tunes of, and we quote, "rare entertainment value," and the audience votes on their favorite. Then the losing songwriters offer an excuse as to why they didn't win, and the audience votes on the best excuse. Super Songmania, featuring winners from past months, will be at 8:30 p.m. today at Zanies, 2025 Eighth Ave. S.

Appearing will be host Casey Kelley, who wrote The Cowboy Rides Away for George Strait, plus Rick Carries (Longneck Bottle, Garth Brooks), Bob Regen, Jon Ims, Craig Wiseman, Jon Michaels, Bruce Miller, Pam Belford, Helen Moore and Michael McGrew. The event will benefit the Nashville Humane Association. Cover is $5. Information: 269-0221. "Those were the only movies really available to young people at that time," she recalled. "While those movies won't stand up to the test of time, it stands a different test of time, they were fun and sweet and of their time." But it's sitcoms that have always come easiest for Fabares. In the 1970s and '80s she worked in The Little People, The Practice, Forever Fernwood and One Day at a Time. Then came Coach in 1989, a show she didn't want to end.

After The Donna Reed Show, Fabares turned to teen flicks in the mid-1960s and co-starred with Elvis Presley in three films: Clambake, Spinout and Girl Happy. In the meantime Fabares keeps busy with her own production company and working with the Alzheimer's Association. "My mother had Alzheimer's. I travel all over the country all year long trying to do different things for the different chapters trying to raise the level of awareness of what Alzheimer's is as a disease," she said. As for husband Mike Farrell, Fabares says the former MASH star is producing a film starring Robin Williams.

Farrell's partner on the project is Barry Kemp Bonnie Franklin's husband as well as Coach creator and Williams' wife. For all her accomplishments, Fabares says she still continues to get feedback on her 1972 TV movie Brian's Song, the true story of a pro football player who died from cancer. "People on the street will stop me and tell me that that is their favorite television film," Fabares said. "It's a heartbreaking story, of course.
