PAGE TEN THE HOLLAND, MICHIGAN, EVENING SENTINEL TUESDAY, JANUARY 30, 1962, Ohio State Defeats Purdue; Wisconsin Wins 4th Straight CHICAGO (UPI) Everybody knows about Ohio State's basketball supremacy, Big Ten or otherwise. but how about those Wisconsin Badgers? The unranked Wisconsin team stayed in step with the top-ranked Buckeyes and held onto its share of the conference cage lead with Monday night's 85 81 surprLe over Illinois on the Illmi floor. The victory boosted Wisconsin's league record to 4-0 and demonstrated that the absence of scholastically ineligible Ron Jackson, the team's leading pointmaker, is not enough to slow the Badgers. Ohio State made it 15 in a row and fifth straight in the conier- ence by scoring a season sweep over Purdue with Monday night's in the Boilermaker 94-73 romp fieldhouse. The Buckeye triumph was led by Mel Nowell who bagged 29 points.

In Monday night's other game. Indiana's high scoring Jimmy Rayl ignited a spurt in the final four minutes which produced a 72-71 Hoosier triumph and moved the Hoosiers into third place with a 3-1 mark. Purdue, which lost by 26 points at Ohio State last week, was regarded as one of the "possibles" to upset the Buckeyes. The Boilermakers made a game of it in the first 14 minutes when the lead switched twice and the score was tied six times. But the Buckeyes pushed in four field goals- for a 24-32 lead and remained ahead to win going away.

Jerry Lucas, who pumped in 32 points against Purdue in the first meeting, for only 13 Monday night. But the All-America center was used only as a decoy and his scoring was unneeded. Rayl, whose 56 points against Minnesota established a single game scoring record last Saturday night, was limited to 24 points. But his two free throws in the final 30 seconds gave the Hoosiers the lead and Jimmy Bass kept them in front with two more as the game ended It was the fifth loss in six league starts for Northwestern. Ken Siebel led Wisconsin scorers with 23 points and Tom Hughbank, Jackson's replacement, netted 17.
