LOCAL NEWS Expert finds Ray suitable for liver transplant IllHi lit. ua i a 4 A beautiful summer day across the region. Plenty of morning sunshine. Building clouds during this after Morning sunshine, then intervals of clouds and sun in the afternoon. Daytime heating will cause the clouds to and a white accomplice.

Ray, who is white, was stabbed more than 20 times that year during an assault at Brushy Mountain prison, where he carried the infamy of having assassinated America's greatest civil rights leader. "It is my medical opinion that Mr. Ray be given an opportunity to undergo a liver transplantation. Without it, he will surely die," Fung said in an Aug. 4 letter to the Tennessee Board of Paroles.

Ray's lawyer, Andrew Hall of Wartburg, has the letter and plans to use it as part of an application for clemency on grounds of terminal illness. Ray has been in critical condition several times since briefly slipping into a coma Scripps Howard News Service MEMPHIS James Earl Ray appears eligible for a liver transplant and may live just four to six months if he does not get one, a leading organ transplant surgeon said yesterday. The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center has quietly conducted medical tests on Ray, 69, despite a judge's June ruling that the confessed assassin of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. cannot travel to Pennsylvania for an examination.

Prison records show Dr. Wallis Marsh of Pitt's Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Center examined Ray in June at the DeBerry Facility in Nashville. That examination and a review eight months ago. But as a legal windstorm brews over Ray's contention he was framed for King's 1968 murder In Memphis, Fung's letter indicates Ray is not ready to give up yet "We consider him only a moderate risk for surgery! although if his condition continues to worsen, his risks will increase," the letter said.

In June, Ray's long-shot bid for a new liver stumbled when Davidson County Chancellor Irvin Kilcrease Jr. said prison officials lacked legal authority to allow Ray to travel to Pittsburgh for tests. Ray, who is serving a 99-year sentence, is incarcerated at the Lois DeBerry Special Needs Facility in Nashville. of Ray's medical records "at least points to the possibility he would be a reasonable candidate," said Dr. John Fung, chief of transplantation surgery at Pitt.

Doctors still are awaiting results of heart and liver evaluations, Fung said. "He's not any worse than most of the patients we receive," Fung said. In a letter to be mailed next week to Tennessee officials, Fung also provides the first public explanation on how Ray may have developed cirrhosis of the liven Ray suffers from hepatitis which can weaken the liver over time. Fung said Ray apparently contracted hepatitis from a blood transfusion in 1981 after being stabbed, allegedly by three black inmates noon. Doug Jones, chairman of the Tri-Cor board, said two employees at the garage have been fired for "gross misconduct" "We havent been satisfied with the operation out there before this all came up," Jones said. "It wasnt productive for the state and we were looking at other options before this happened." Tri-Cor director Patricia Wieland said the garage has been in operation for at least 15 years and includes "free world" staff and inmates. "The purpose is to train inmates to work in the field of mechanics," she said. She said inmates worked on vehicles that were owned by the state or nonprofit agencies, not those owned by the public.

Safety Department spokesman Anthony Kimbrough said a "handful" of vehicles, including a former Tennessee Highway Patrol cruiser, were stolen from the state-owned Central Garage near Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in West Nashville. "Our investigation centers on stolen vehicles, auto parts and accessories surrounding the Central Garage," Kimbrough said. Results of the investigation will be forwarded to Davidson County District Attorney General Torry Johnson. Twelve prison inmates were working at the garage when it was closed, according to state Correction Department spokeswoman Pam Gehman.

The garage is operated as part of Task force nabs brothers sought in Ohio robbery By HECTOR BECERRA Staff Writer Two men sought in a violent February home-invasion robbery in Akron, Ohio, were apprehended yesterday near MetroCenter by an FBI Violent Crimes Task Force. "We got two big ones," FBI Special Agent Derek McGraw said of brothers Gary Lee and Ted Noble. McGraw said the brothers are accused of beating up a woman and threatening to kill her 9-year-old grandson during the robbery. The brothers have been at large for six months. Authorities at first believed they had arrested Gary Noble, 30, and an accomplice who identified himself as Lawrence Frank, 46.

Fingerprinting, however, showed that Frank was actually Ted Noble. The February home invasion at the Akron home of Becky Wood, 48, by two masked gunmen later identified as the Noble brothers was profiled by the NBC television program, Unsolved Mysteries. The suspects fled with a safe that contained an estimated $34,000 in jewelry and cash and with Woods' car, which was later recovered not far from the scene of the crime. The suspects were captured after a brief car chase ended on the 1-265 off ramp near MetroCenter. The task force composed of Metro police, the U.S.

Marshal's Service, the Secret Service and the FBI was responding to tips that Gary Noble was working on the stadium construction project here. Late yesterday, task force officials found out they had captured both brothers. The brothers face federal charges of unlawful flight, McGraw said. They are being held at the Metro Criminal Justice Center pending extradition to Ohio, where they face charges of home invasion, kidnapping and receiving stolen property. JZZLING UUT.
