TV: ESPN (Mike Patrick, Mike Gottfried, Dr. Jerry Punch). Radio: 29 stations across the Midstate, including WLAC-AM (1510) (John Ward, Bill Anderson). Last game: Tennessee comes off a disappointing 35-29 home loss to Florida; Mississippi beat Vanderbilt 20-9 in Nashville.

Who's hot: Tennessee WR Joey Kent (20 catches, 372 yards, 2 TD), QB Peyton Manning (62-97, 1,078 yards, 7 TD), PR Terry Fair (23.0 average), LB Al Wilson (24 tackles, 5 for loss). Ole Miss QB Paul Head (81-125, 796 yards, 5 TD), PR Ta'Boris Rsher (20.8 average), RB Artie Moore (311 yards, 7 TD), LB Nate Wayne (39 tackles). A close look: Tennessee came off last year's Florida loss and ran the table, beginning with a 52-14 win over Mississippi State. Ole Miss's three wins are over a pair of NCAA Division l-AA foes and Vanderbilt, but the Rebels lost by 17 points to Auburn. MISSISSIPPI OFFENSE "It will be extra motivation for the fans it's hit a nerve with them." For the LSU fans who dont get the word and show up without white on, white T-shirts will be handed out "I think it would be kind of cool if everybody does that 'White Out' thing I heard them talking about," LSU senior offensive tackle Sean Wells said.

"I guess Vanderbilt felt they needed to do what they've done. We're just concentrating on winning an SEC game." LaFleur admits he and his teammates have wondered why VU was so color conscious about this game. "It looks like they want to do it for spite," LaFleur said. "Maybe they're looking for an edge to get back at coach DiNardo." Or, maybe it's DiNardo, who left Vanderbilt to become LSU's coach, who's looking for the edge. Joey Kent has broken the 100-yard barrier in each of UT's three with Marcus Nash accompanying him in two contests and Peerless Price in one. ADVANTAGE UT. OFFENSIVE LINE: Junior tackle Jar-vis Reado's broken leg doesn't help an already struggling Vol front.

Ole Miss returns three starters guards Shannon Provencher and Omar Edwards and tackle Boyd Kitchen. ADVANTAGE Ole Miss. DEFENSIVE LINE: UT's rotation at tackle has been an effective one; 35 tackles and a pair of sacks for Bill Duff, Billy Ratliff, Billy Beron and Ron Green. Ole Miss can bring some experience, with four seniors listed on the two-deep chart; Quentin Wilson's three sacks lead the squad. ADVANTAGE UT.

i LINEBACKER: Al Wilson and Tyrone Hines are the top Vol tacklers; Wil- son also has six stops for lost yardage. KICKER: UT's Larry Binion is averaging 42.1 yards per punt, and returners Fair and Mark Levine have done a stellar job. "I heard that they were going to come out in their whites for warm-up and then come out and play in their purple," VU senior linebacker Mark Jefcoat said. "That wouldnt surprise me." What about DiNardo, who when at VU wouldnt allow spectators at practice to wear the colors of the enemy, "These kind of things are important to him," Jefcoat said. "I wouldnt want to be an LSU player because I'm sure everybody's walking on thin ice.

Vanderbilt is almost a 20-point underdog. Playing in Hanes briefs wouldn't change that much.

"I dont find it to be that big a deal," LSU senior tight end David LaFleur said. "I like the purple jerseys. It's more for the fans. The white is a big tradition and the fans love it" "People look at it differently," sophomore defensive tackle Anthony McFarland said. "Some players dont care and some take it personal.

"The only regret I have is not following in my dad's footsteps. But I think it's worked out for the better. The Lord put me here for a reason," said Lane, who has rushed for 331 yards and three TDs this season after being slowed by a pulled muscle.

Lane gets a little miffed when discussing his academics but points to a 2.6 grade point average in inter-disciplinary studies of elementary education as evidence of being able to do college work. Lane describes himself as both a power and slashing runner, saying "it depends on the situation the defense gives me. If it's the open field and I've got the chance, 111 give 'em a move and try to fake 'em out If not, IH try to run over them." Comings and goings: Quarterback Robey Williams is practicing again for the first time since late August Coach L.C. Cole said Williams has completed the necessary school work to become eligible and that he could be available for Saturday's game against Lane, if clearance is received from the NCAA. TSU is also hoping to regain the services of tight end Ernest Hester, one of two players stripped of eligibility after playing in the season opener when he hadnt been certified.

The NCAA is expected to return his eligibility. Cole announced that defensive backs A.J. Brown, a freshman from of Dayton, Ohio, and Marshall Lyons, a sophomore from Gulfport, have left the team. game at Tennessee State, Lane is just 69 yards from the milestone for his career and has 39 touchdowns. NFL scouts from every team have visited the Jackson, school to look at one of the nation's premier small-college players. "Fred is an impact player, a wide-open front runner like Barry Sanders. He weighs about 210 pounds and bench-presses 400 pounds. He's one of the best running backs I've ever seen," said his father, Fred Lane who was a solid running back at Tennessee State in 1970-71 and is athletic director at Freedom Middle School in Franklin.

Said pro scout Milt Von Mann of Nashville: "I know he's in a small college, but he makes plays." Lane College Coach John Gore predicted his running back "definitely has a future in the NFL, barring anything catastrophic. He works hard and has great speed, great balance, great power and great strength. He's got the whole package." Lane played at Franklin High and was recruited by a number of Division I schools including Washington, Georgia, LSU and Mississippi before they backed off because of his grades. He then looked to Tennessee State but couldnt get in there either, so he MTSU hopes for good news on two injuries By ANTHONY COLEMAN Spurts Writer MURFREESBORO It's no coincidence that Middle Tennessee State's 34-7 loss to Murray State occurred without Typail McMullen in uniform. The former two-year Texas starter wasn't on the field because of a knee injury when the Blue Raiders had trouble slowing down Murray's potent offense.

And he wasn't on the field when Middle beat Tennessee3iattanooga for its only victory three weeks ago. "It hurt not having him out there," defensive tackle Anthony McCord said. "Some of our younger guys have stepped up and done a pretty good job in his absence. But it will be great when he and Robert Smith, a transfer from South Carolina get healthy." Smith, a 6-4, 245-pound linebacker, has a fractured arm and probably will be available within the next two weeks. Both players are expected to be evaluated before MTSU takes on Jacksonvile State on Saturday.

But because that game is a non-conference contest there is a chance that both could be held out until the Austin Peay game Oct 12. McMullen, who had arthroscopic surgery, is itching to get back. "The reason I came here is because this program has always won," he said.
