onn 0DM VMm Giro WW DAILY NASHVILLE SOUNDS UPDATE American Association Eftdnii DMsion Pet GB Munoz gets taste of majors, still hungry By ANTHONY COLEMAN Sports Writer Eight weeks out of nine years isn't much. But the Sounds Jose Munoz isn't going to complain about the too-short time he spent with the parent Chicago White Sox earlier this year. "That's why I respect the guy so much," Sounds Manager Rick Renick said. "When he was sent here he made himself available to play right away. That's the type of character he has.

He's very dependable and that's important to me." 44 22 Hi 37 36 XI WH 32 35 Wi 30 39 XSiWI Buffalo (Indians) Indianapoki (Reds) NashviW (WSox) Louisville (Cards) if Fordham hurls 1-hitter to help Sounds win 10-0 Tennessean staff reports OMAHA, Neb. But he understands he has a job to do with the Sounds. "I really enjoyed myself having had that chance," Munoz said of his major league experience. "I'd like to get an opportunity to get back. But I'm here to help this team win right now." Munoz was rewarded for his nine-year journey April 7 when he was called up after utility man Norberto (Paco) Martin was injured attempting to bunt Munoz hit .259 during his nearly two-month stay Halter If 1000 Vrasc 5024 FMartinass 3000 vane a Totals 41 It 10 Tea von 000 (34 Scott Ruffcorn 49 Chris Tremie 40 OrraM ON 0 R. The righthander was at times brilliant He fanned seven hitters and was unhitta-ble after allowing a hit in the first inning. "What can you say about him," said Sounds pitching coach Don Cooper. "He was outstanding. He had good stuff. He pitched a great game." The Sounds had 16 hits as a team.

Catcher Julio Vinas drilled a double with the bases loaded in the fourth inning to provide the Sounds with all of the scoring that they would need while staking the team to a 3-0 lead. Vinas would get another RBI in the eighth inning and finished with four RBI for the game. Cappuccio also added a solo homer in the ninth inning, just one pitch after teammate Olmedo Saenz had drilled a three-run homer for the Sounds. Mike Robertson also had three hits in the game for the Sounds. This was a great team win," said Cooper.

"Everybody in the lineup tonight swung the bat extremely well. We caught Omaha a little bit They have lost some players who have been promoted to the major leagues." Fordham struggled a bit with his control. He allowed four walks, the second cosecutive game where he has issued four free passes. 4-" MllitW i-w. a How they scored Nashya four: HaH grounds out to; shortstop.

It was an experience he'd like to repeat some day soon. "I understand that sometimes you have to wait," Munoz said. "Playing up there this year was great, though. It makes you want to play there that much more." It's that attitude that has endeared Munoz to his coaches and teammates. "I really respect Jose for what he has done," said Renick of Munoz, who has a .292 batting average during his stint in Class AAA ball "The way he carries himself In the clubhouse is great He's a leader, the type of guy that you really want on your team." Munoz, 28, has spent the past five years in Class AAA That's a long time for someone who is just one step away from the major leagues.

"He's a veteran player who has been around the game and knows how to play," shortstop Chris Snopek said. "He handles himself very well." 1 Munoz has been a reliable player throughout his minor league career. He has played at least 100 games for eight straight seasons. "Jose brings a lot to this ballclub," said Snopek, who joined the Sounds this past weekend after having spent the entire season with the White Sox. "He's a veteran who knows what it takes to win." Munoz is hitting .215 with the Sounds but had a three-hit game Sunday night He drove in four runs and played a stellar game at second.

And then he came back with a two-hit performance against the Omaha Royals on Monday night He's likely to split some time with Doug Brady, who returned from the disabled list Thursday. "I'm feeling a little more comfortable at the plate," said Munoz, who had just 27 at-bats in Chicago. "Maybe I'm getting my timing back a little bit But I really don't want to say that right now." The Sounds are 10-5 since Munoz's return. "This team has played great baseball the last 20 games or so," Munoz said. "We have a lot bf talent on this team and a very good group of guys." Chaffin sees the challenge the same way. "Unless Mike's Reynolds, current point leader not showing everything he's got the field is pretty even," Chaffin added. "You've got Joe Buford, Andy Kirby and Mike Green all running good. To go in there and win is really going to be tough." Chaffin's car is brand new and is ahead of its time by about a month. "We have been planning to run four or five races all along," Chaffin said, "but we were going to wait a little longer.

"We had everything here so we decided to get it ready. We'll basically set the car up from past experience." "Oh, it's not that bad," said Chaffin, the 1995 points champion at Nashville Speedway who returns to action for the first time this season tonight The motor arrived Wednesday, but it was yanked out and sent to Huntsville, for testing yesterday. "We'll put the motor back in today and get to the track for practice around 2 p.m.," Chaffin said.

The tightness on time hasn't -i mivrnm i- thrown the driver for a loop and he agreed that many teams who run at Nashville have had to use what little time they had to the fullest. "We were looking at possibly having to rent a motor," Chaffin said, "and really it wouldn't be that big of a deal. A lot of teams don't own their motors, even in the Winston Cup Series." Chaffin's return adds more punch to tonight's Late Model Stock Car division, and former track champion Andy Kirby is looking forward to the 200-lap event "Welcome back," Kirby said.
