PAGE SIX THE HOLLAND, MICHIGAN, EVENING SENTINEL i County Primary Road Marking System Okayed LANSING Michigan residents and tourists soon will benefit from a new, standardized county primary road marking system. Adoption of the improved route numbering plan has been announced by Earl F. Rogers, engineer-director of the County Road Association of Michigan, following months of study. The program features use of new maize and blue road signs with letters followed by two- digit numbers to identify the more than 25,000 miles of county roads in the state. The unique numbering and lettering plan will enable tourists and comraercial haulers in strange areas to quicklv identify direction and general location of destinations.

The program is expected to be specially helpful in resort area? and in many suburban areas where business plants are located on county roads. Rogers said that the new county marking system is compatible with the state trunk- line numering plan and eventually will be incorporated on BLOCK INCOME TAX SERVICE 70 W. 8th Ph. 396-5511 state highway maps and directional markers. The basic plan provides for dividing the state into eight zones lettered from A to H.

These zones are determined by major state and federal trunk lines which form dividers. each zone, two-digit numbers will designate continuous routes although each may cross several counties In some cases, the route number may extend through one or more zones'although the letter designation may change. The numbering system wil employ even numbers for East- West roads and odd numbers for North-South routes Lower numbers, such as 01 nnd 02 etc will start at the East or South boundaries and progressively increase to the 90 anc 91 levels toward the West and North within each zone Thus, a traveler seeking to find A-28 could quickly determine that his destination is in the Southwestern Michigan area and that his route is an East- West road in the central pait of that zone. Development of the comprehensive route numbering plan punts Michigan counties in a leadership role Seveial other states such as Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, and California have experimented with somewhat similar programs. As pictured above, the new maize and blue signs will show a letter followed by two numbers and the county name. Earl F. Rogers, County Road Association engineer-director, said letters will designate eight zones in the state, as shown, while even numbers indicate East-West routes and odd numbers North-South. Low numbeis will start at the East or South, progressing to higher numbers in the West or North of each zone. Shift to the new system, which will be shown on new state highway maps, will be gradual due to cost of re-signing major routes.

ments from Michigan's 83 county road commissions now have approved the new marking system, Rogers estimated it will require several years to make the plan completely effective No estimates are available yet on the cost of re-signing the entire primary system but at is expected to be sufficiently costly that many counties will be obliged to tackle the picblem gradually, spreading the cost and the physical job of replacement over a period of several years Rogers said he estimated it may cost as much as $15 to $20 per mile in rural areas to replace existing signs and the expense may be far greater in metropolitan areas where more markers are required. Thus far, the switch to the new signs will be optional by ocal road commissions but all have agreed to the standardized plan, Rogers said. deport Father Hurled Daughter To Her Death DETROIT (UPI)--A 24-year- old Army veteran was expected to be formally charged with murder today in the death of Mary Johnson, 14, whom he allegedly threw from a freeway overpass after shooting and wounding his mother. Blames Kent Deaths On Both Sides WASHINGTON (UPI) --The President's Commission on Campus Unrest blames the deaths of four students at Kent State University last May 4 on violent and criminal action by war protesters, and unjustified, indiscriminate gunfire by the National Guard. The commission, in a special report issued Sunday, found much to blame and little to excuse on both sides in the tragedy which shocked the nation and galvanized the war protest movement last spring. The panel said war protesters on the Kent State campus, students and non students alike, acted in an intolerable fashion.

And it repeated a statement made in its major report week earlier: "Violence by students on or off the campus can never be justified by any grievance, philosophy or political idea. There can be no sanctuary or immunity from prosecution on the campus. Criminal acts by students must be treated as such wherever they occur and whatever their purpose." The commission traced the evolution of the incident which eventually killed four and wounded nine others, and concluded: "The a i of some students were violent and criminal and those of some others were dangerous, reckless and irresponsible. The indiscriminate firing of rifles into a crowd of students and the deaths that followed were unnecessary, unwarranted and inexcusable." It criticized the Ohio National Guard for ordering its men to carry loaded Ml rifles onto the campus and said, "The Kent adex advertising, inc. 341 east IGth stmtst.
