GRAND HAVEN The Ottawa County Board of Supervisors at its opening meeting ol the January session Monday afternoon took under advisement a proposal to build an underground control cen- ter for the county The need for such a Civil De- 1 fense center was explained by Col I Henry Bacon of Battle Creek of i the Department of Defense who was introduced by Hans Suzenaar, county CD head.

Bacon explained this is the first time in history that levels of government are subject to an attack by nuclear weapons and that to maintain continuity of government, the county should have a control center He described federal centers now in existence, plans for additional centers on state and federal levels and regional centers He said Michigan has, been divided into five regions and the Corps oi Engineers LS engaged in a shelter suney to select buildings in cities, villages and rural areas which could be stocked with food, medical supplies, tools and radar equipment He said that Ottawa County is not a prime target, but pointed to dangers if a nuclear device were detonated in Milwaukee with westerly winds, and resultant fallout in this area in a matter of hours. Pa I Former Los Angeles Dodger outfielder Carl Furillo said Monday night he's been offered the manager's post for the Hawaiian Islanders in the Pacific Coast League but "doubts" it was a sincere move Furillo said he has not been able to get a job in the major leagues since his dispute i the Dodgers following his release in May, 1960 came into the open He said he has been "curtly" refused twice by each maior league team to which he has ap plied for a job his release Government Sets Search For Talent DETROIT 'LTD-- The government is on a talent hunt in Michigan. Officials from the government's space agency began interviewing job applicants Monday as part of a nationwide drive to recruit 2,000 engineers and scientists this year The National Aeronautics and Space Administration known as NASA wants the brainpower for the U.S. lunar program, propulsion research, supersonic transport study and other projects. Bruce Lundin, assistant director of NASA's advance propulsion headquarters at Cleveland, said the agency's biggest job now is to land a man on the moon before 1970.

"This a is certainly larger than any other technological activity we have ever engaged in," Lundin said. "And to carry on the program we need 2,000 qualified scientists The prime contract for the moon ship, known as Project Apollo, was awarded recently to North American Aviation The first outlay was $400 million but NASA said the bill probably will run close to $2 billion in the next three years The Apollo spaceship will not be launched directly to the moon under present plans, Lundin said. Rather, a rendevous technique has been approved whereby payloads from smaller vehicles will be shot into orbit, assembled in space and then fired to the moon. Still under study is the huge Nova rocket which, in theory, could do the job in one stage. But Lunkin said the Nova, while still being developed, won't be constructed at this time as a complete vehicle because, through the rendevous technique, it's believed the L- S.

can get to the moon quicker Lundin indicated the Nova engine was be'ng developed as m- surance if through some problem. the rendevous technique using 1 rockets runs into trouble THE JACKSON TWINS by Dick Brooks Chisox Sign Al Lory, Brother of Frank Lory CHICAGO I Chicago Cubs today announced the signing of pitcher Al Lary, brother of De troit Tiger hurler Frank Lary.
