Htar Sth The Raleigh correspondent of the Star telegraphs that Senator Butler will open the anti amendment cam paign in Wilmington and that Sena tor Pritchard will have his in Rockingham The ob ject in view is so plain that every intelligent man will see it at a glance Wilmington and Richmond county have been selected because the Dock eryites claim that they were the storm centers of Democratic activity in 1898 and Pritchard and Butler are sent into this congressional dis trict in the hope that they will be notified that they will not be allowed to speak or if they do attempt to speak that the meetings will be brok en up by the Democratic shirts The Star hopes and believes that their attempt to manufacture capital will prove a disastrous failure Let Butler and Pritchard twin brothers of negro rule speak until they are hoarse Certainly in Wilmington Butler cannot change a single vote Nor does he expect to do this He hopes that he will not be allowed to speak But contemptible as he is or should be in the estimation of ev ery decent white man in North Carolina there should be no attempt made to interfere with his meet ing Let him severely alone They Regret to Part Wiib Dr Long The Graham Gleaner of last week in announcing the fact that Dr Geo Long was moving from that town to Statesville says: announcement is not a pleas ant one to make speaking from the standpoint of a citizen of this com munity The loss of Dr Long and his excellent family will be sincerely regretted by the people of Graham and their acquaintances throughout the county 25 years or more Dr Geo Long has practiced medicine in Gra ham and this community within two miles of the place of his birth and the scenes of his boyhood days and during these years he has grown to be one of the most skillful physicians and surgeons A number of times he has beeh honored by his medical brethren or years he was county superintendent of health He served the full limit of time on the State Board of Medical Examiners and was last year elected president of the North Carolina Medical So ciety As a good citizen a courteous Christian gentleman a loyal and sympathizing friend and a learned and skillful physician no man in the county is more universally esteemed Those whom he has served profes sionally will sorely and sadly miss his tender care and cheerful voice in the sick room from the humblest up and his professional brethren by whom he is held in the highest esteem will also miss his helpful experience Into his new home he carries the best wishes of all for continued success in his mission of mercy And we will add in all sincerity should he and his household decide at some future time to cast their lot once again here among old life long friends they would be received most cordially and or Charlotte Observer 12th Intelligence reached here last night of a very sensational though blood less shooting affair at Lowesville Lincoln county on Tuesday The parties connected with the shooting arc Dr Alexander and Dr John Davidson It seams that Mr Bark er was sick and sent a negro for Dr Davidson who is his regular physi cian Dr Davidson was not at home and tbo negro then went for Dr A lexander who at once attended Mr Barker Same lime later Dr Davidson came to his office and learning that A Mr Barker had sent for him started tor the home lie met Dr Alexander coming from Mr Barker's residence and asked him why be had attended Mr Barker who was his (Dr Davidson's) patient Some hot words were exchanged and Dr Dav idson drew a revolver and fired sev eral shots at Dr Alexander none of which took effect Dr Alexander has sworn out a warrant for Dr Davidson but the latter has not been arrested yet Both these physicians are from Mecklenburg county and are cous ins We will have good Driving arm and Saddle Horses and a number of fine Mares also a number of large and medium Mules No one could imagine for what pur pose he bought it and the purchase caused considerable comment It afterward developed that it was in this cave that Dr Neyman proposed to inter the remains of Peter Stuart Ney He had been secretly corres ponding for a long time with the deacons of the Third Creek church for the purpose of securing re mains but his requests had been re fused inally Dr Neyman went to the deacons and told his story under a strict pledge of secrecy It was not believed but when Dr Neyman of fered to prove by an examination of the skull that the dead man was Marshal Ney the authorities were sufficiently impressed to agree to have it exhumed This was done on May 3 1889 Marshal skull had once been trepanned and Dr Neyman hoped to show this but he was disappointed the body being in such a condition after forty three years that examination was impossi ble The church authorities then finally refused to allow the remains to be removed During this whole time Dr Ney man had remained silent on the sub ject except to the church authorities and in all probability would have continued silent But the story leaked out in North Carolina coming to the ears of Dr Weston rector of the Church of the Ascension at Hickory Dr Weston was then completing a book on the prob able fate of Marshal Ney and was of course much interested Rewrote to Dr Neyman and received a reply asking him not to reveal his identity but admitting the truth of the story The tale had begun to spread already and before long Dr Neyman was questioned by many people To these he gave little satisfaction content ing himself with the statement that the school teacher buried in North Carolina was certainly Marshal Ney It is only since the publication of an article written by a man at Albany who says he is related to Mar shal Ney that Dr Neyman has giv en any particulars to support his statement The article referred to scouted the idea that Marshal Ney died in this country or anywhere else save in the Luxembourg Gar dens Among his friends a very strong point in favor of Dr story is the apparent lack of incentive for him to falsify He has wealth far beyond his needs and has at most but very few years to live He cares nothing for ostentation and evident ly nothing for any fame which the matter may bring him as is evinced by his long silence and many denials Another point is the remarkable re semblance between Dr son and the pictures of Marshal Ney when the latter was about middle age Dr lawyer is known to have papers which no one is to see until after the death Dr Neyman says they will prove his ease History records that Marshal third son was named Eugene and that he was born in 1808 in Paris which would make him the sJme age as Dr Neyman were he living But about this point Dr story and encyclopedia diverge Larousse gives Count ca reer It says ho entered the rench diplomatic service was stationed at various foreign cities and in 1843 was sent as charge to Brazil whence he returned to Paris in 1815 suffering from the illness which caus ed his death lu the same year further to show that Eugene was a person whose career known to the world various ings by him including a book are mentioned The friends of State Senator Smith of Stanly are urging him for the Democratic nomination for Lieu tenant Governor Tbo jury in the celebrated Mar shall counterfeiting case which was tried in the ederal Court in Raleigh last week failed to agree and a mis trial resulted Mr Ashley Horne of Johnston county whose name has been men tioned in connection with the Demo cratic nomination for State Treasur er says he is not a candidate for the nomination Durham county has probably the largest public school fund of any county in the State It is $2 94 per capita and it is estimated that the amount will run the schools an average of months Tbo matter of a successor to Sena tor Butler has been settled The Sun says a number of Salisburians met in Khittz drug store Thursday night and decided that Hon Simmons is the man The Land mark has no inclination to dissentfrom this decision Alajar Preston Smith an old and well known citizen of Salisbury died Thursday night He had been in feeble health for a long time Ma jor Smith was born in Anson county in 1834 During the war he was a member Graham Gleaner says that an aged colored woman named Louisa Bowden who lived alone' about five miles from Saxapahaw Alamance county was burned in her house two weeks ago last night The light was seen by neighbors and upon exami nation the next day the house (or cabin) was found consumed and her charred bones in the smouldering embers The Lincolnton Journal learns that Jas Mullen executor of the venerable Senator stroked his snowy beard thoughtfully and re plied in the following picturesque language were you ever on a cattle ranch in the West when a round up was in progress? seen the trick many a time The cowboys drive the an inclosure that has a very narrow a sort of funnel like but once they are inside the corral it widens out into a spacious plat of ground where there is room enough and Revived He Sy Peter Stuart Ney Was the Marshal and Claims to Have Visited 1 Him Once in North Iredell and Once lo Statesville Louisville Ky Correspondence New Yoik Sun At Saltillosville Ind about wen ty four miles back fram New Alba ny lives a man of 92 known to the public as Dr Neyman To the few who have heard his story he is Eugene Ney third son of Marshal Ney bravest of the brave" Quite naturally his story is connect 1 ed with the legend that Marshal Ney 1 was not really sjjt in the Luxem bourg Gardens but was spir ted away to die a country school teacher in North Carolina The story did not become known through him and when questioned about it he denied at first that his name had ever been anything else than Neyman It is only in very re cent years that be has admitted that Marshal Ney was his father Henow 1 says that at his death papers will be 1 forthcoming to prove his story At a meeting in this city between Dr Neyman and the Rev Dr James A Weston the author of a book about 1 the North Carolina Ney and two newspaper men Dr Neyman for the first time told of the farewell scene between his mother and Marshal Ney The parting took place on the evening following the supposed exe cution He also told of interviews with his father in this country Regarding the parting ho says that although only eight years old at the time he remembers distinctly how his father of whom be stood in great dread came in disguise to his home kissed his wife and children good by and mounting the horse that stood waiting at the door rode away into the night Of what happened to Marshal Ney during the next five years he knows nothing except what his father told him when they next met whieh was in Baltimore in 1821 It seems that when Ney left home on that night he escaped into England aided by powerful friends and pass ports furnished by the Duke of Wei lingt in In England he was befriend ed by Cobbett the famous Liberal leader of Cob bett gave him letters to influential people in Baltimore and aided him to cross undetected to this country Here Ney was in perfect safety but ou account of his friends in England and rance who might have suffered severely had their partHn his escape become known be kepi his identity a secret Here he became a school teacher securing many pupils through influence When young Ney came to this country bis father appren ticed him to Drs Rush and Cox the Philadelphia surgeons and it was under them that tbo son received his education It was not until fourteen years later that father and son met again Peter Stuart Ney was then teaching school in Iredell county He made bis home with Placebo Houston a farmer To this place young Ney made his way reaching it at supper time tie asKea to oe accommodated for the night but bis request was refused the farmer say ing that every bed was occupied Young Ney insisted saying that as it was the only house within reach he must sleep there or on the roadside He agreed to sleep on the floor and the farmer yielded to his entreaties At supper father and son sat oppo site each other but did not speak After the meal they left the house together went behind a haystack and remained there talking until nearly morning This is corroborated by Mrs Mary Dalton daughter of armer Houston She says that when she and the other members of the family were told of the meeting be hind the baystack by rederick a farm hand they remembered that when the two men faced each other at the table there seemed to be a sign of understanding between them At this meeting Ney gave his son a cheek for $1000 for his start in life and earnestly recommended him to enlist in the United States army This advice young Ney followed He webt to Jefferson Barracks at St Louis and enlisted He was in the Eighth Infantry during the Seminole war and was also in the expedition against the Mormons He next saw Marshal Ney and for the last time alive in 1843 at which time young Ney had returned to civil life and was practicing medicine in Brownstown Ind They met by agreement in a tavern kept by Thomas Allison at Statesville Of this meeting Dr Neyman has lit tie to say Later he went to JacK son Miss When the war with Mex ico broke out he went again into the atmy but under the assumed name which bo still bears Ho is rather reticent on that subject because for many years be feared prosecution by 1 the United States government for a serious cffence committed during the 1 Seminole war He says that one day he found a very dear comrade being brutally punished by his captain In the excess of his anger he struck the captain How he came out of the trouble he does not say but when he went into tho Mexican war he deem ed it best to change bis name After the war be traveled in tho West In dies for several years Evidently he prospered for when he returned and settled in Campbellsburg he was in verv comfortable circumstance In fact he is now said to be worth $100 000 In the meantime Peter Stuait
