Bea, who likens herself to anyone who must spend sever-al hours a day on his feet, comments, "Few people realize how much time an actress spends on her feet.

The two biggest dangers to an actress are lack of work and varicose veins," "I'm convinced now," Bea elaborates after having suffered sprained ankles, sore muscles and a wrenched back during the first three years of 'Petticoat Junction', "that most of my trouble was due to poor physical conditioning. Not that I'm the sickly type, but we go through a great deal of physical exercise in making our series all of which requires stamina and muscular flexibility. Swung Aboard "Just last week, for example, I had to swing aboard the 'Hootervllle Cannonball' and mount up to the cab several times until it had been filmed correctly. This time I was able to accomplish the feat quite easily; whereas, during a similar filming last year, I had to be assisted. I attribute It all to exercise." "Why should 1," laughed Buchanan, "I think ifs wonderful for Bea, but I'm type cast as the great 'SIT DOWN' actor. Everyone else in show runs around accommodating the story, and I always wind up in a rocking chair or on the back of a mule." Even though Bea hasn't had much success with Edgar, she's a walking testimonial to the rewards of the daily exercise program. Wardrobe Altered "I've actually gained weight," she said, "but my measurements have shrunk. All my wardrobe has had to be altered, but that's one cost our producer, Chuck Stewart, doesn't mind paying." "Bea's attitude is wonderful," states Stewart. If Bea ever had any doubts about the benefits of her physical fitness program, they were dispelled recently when the assistant director reported a conversation he'd overheard from two visitors on the set.
