THE TENNESSEAN WednwJay, Nownber 22 1995 Robberies haunt rural victims Man charged with murder after woman in his care dies KNOXVILLE (AP) A decade of unsolved burglaries across East Tennessee has left terrorized victims suffering a loss greater than their stolen valuables: the lost sense of security in their own homes. "My husband woke up, and a guy had a gun pointed at my head. We were handcuffed to the head of the bed," says Patsy Jenkins of Hamblen County. That's how two robbers left them as they fled with a large amount of cash in the middle of the night It was 1989. Patsy Jenkins says she still isn't over it "I will not stay at home by myself," she said.

"And we dont sleep in that bedroom anymore." The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has a file on about a dozen similar robberies in upper East Tennessee dating to the mid-1980s. "We believe there is a single ringleader, but others who participate may not be the same every time," said Bob Denny, agent in charge of TBI's upper East Tennessee office. with pick handles. Hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash and valuables have been taken. There have been no arrests.

"I cant understand how these people can operate for 10 years and be untouched," said Dr. David Cawood of Jefferson City, who was beaten and robbed by intruders in 1994. But Denny now has two agents assigned to the investigation. "There are a lot of similarities," he said. "The descriptions generally match.

The victims have been handcuffed or tied, usually with shoestrings, but in a lot of cases, duct tape also is used. "Most of the robberies have occurred on Sunday night or early Monday morning, and in every case the robbers have used ski masks." Denny said progress has been made in the investigation. "We're working on this," he said. "We have some angles we're pursuing and maybe well get a break one of these days." By DEBORAH HIGHLAND Staff Writer CARTHAGE, Tenn. A Smith County man was arrested early yesterday after a woman he was caring for died from neglect dehydration and multiple fractures, authorities said.

Paul Lee Whited, 23, of 112 Difficult Road in Pleasant Shade, is charged with first-degree murder. He was being held without bond in Smith County Jail, Smith County sheriff Johnny Bane said. Whited was charged after doctors pronounced his houseguest Orgie Dean Bush, 55, dead from neglect and dehydration. Bane said. Also listed as contributing to the death were multiple fractures, TBI Special Agent John Mehr said.

On Monday, Whited and his wife had taken Bush's body to Trousdale County Hospital in Hartsville, where doctors were suspicious about her death. Bane said. "Upon a medical doctor's examination, The robberies have occurred in Sullivan, Jefferson, Cocke, Knox, Hamblen and Greene counties. The first victim was Jeannie Wilson, mayor of Newport at the time, who was robbed by three men wearing ski masks in 1986. She was left handcuffed to a railing in her home.

The most recent were farmer and Baptist minister Lowell Marlow and his wife, Lorene, who came home to a robbery in progress at their rural Claiborne County house Oct 1. The couple were tied up and threatened at gunpoint before three masked intruders fled with cash, jewelry and guns. "I was as scared as I was being in the war," said Marlow, an ex-Marine who fought in Vietnam. It was worse on his wife. "Her nerves are shot" he said.

In every case, the homeowners have been bound. Some have been struck the doctor came to the conclusion that something wasn't right and needed to be checked out" he said. Hartsville and Trousdale County authorities contacted Bane. Numerous agencies were investigating: the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the Smith County Sheriffs Department Trousdale County Sheriffs Department Hartsville Police Department and the Department for Human Services. The affidavit for the warrant said Bush was repeatedly beaten over the head and chest Mehr said.

Whited and his wife, Christine, were supposed to be caring for Bush, who had health problems, Mehr said. "She did need the care and attention of someone," Mehr said. No charges had been filed against Christina Whited in Bush's death, Mehr said. Inmates bitten by spiders; one in critical condition Marian Abigail Gray 47, for- MEMPHIS (AP) Two inmates apparently were bitten by spiders at the Shelby County jail, and one was in critical condition, authorities say. Both inmates were being held in a section of the jail reserved for prisoners on suicide watch.

Kay Black, a sheriffs department spokeswoman, said exterminators routinely spray the jail for insects, spiders and other such pests, and He has been unable to tell authorities why he became ill, but jailers found a dead spider in his cell. Inmate Samuel Robbins, 25, was bitten Sunday night Black said. He was taken to the hospital but was not believed to be seriously ill.
