Saturday SEPTEMBER 1. 1990 THE TENNESSEAN 9C Griffeys, show family ties in Seattle Since 1953 "Most Everything" SEATTLE AP) Ken Griffey, an 18-year major league veteran, began thinking about making baseball history 1 8 months ago by becoming the first father to play on the same major league team with his son. "For the last year and a half, this is something that has been in the back of my mind," he said. At 19, Ken Griffey top draft choice in the nation in 1987 from Cincinnati's Moeller High School, arrived as a rookie for the Seattle Mariners. Against the odds.

Griffey Jr. overcame his youth and inexperience and stuck. At 20, when most young players are in Double A ball, he blossomed and became the first Mar iners player elected to the All-Star game. He was the American League's starting center fielder at Chicago's Wrigley Field on July 10. Now, Griffey, 40, and his son are together on the Mariners for the final month of the 1 990 season.

On Aug. 18, Cincinnati general manager Bob Quinn gave Griffey 15 minutes to decide among three options: To retire, accept his release or go on the disabled list. Initially, Griffey chose retirement, thinking the Mariners would be able to pick him up, allowing him to play with his son for a month. However, National League rules required a 60-day waiting period before a "retired" player could be signed by another team. Griffey said he didn't understand the 60-day rule at first.

So Griffey "unretired," and the Reds released him last weekend. Wednesday, he cleared waivers and was signed by the Mariners to make baseball history: A father and son on the same major league roster. Griffey didn't play in Seattle on Wednesday and Thursday nights against Detroit But he was scheduled to start in left alongside his son last night against Kansas City. "This is the pinnacle for me, something I'm very proud of," Griffey said. "You can talk about the '76 batting race, the two World Series I played in and the Ail-Star games I played in.

But this is the best thing that's ever happened to me." Griffey said he hasn't ruled out playing next season. The Mariners signed him for the remainder of the 1990 season. "This all happened because of what Junior has done," he said. "I never thought he'd make it to the big leagues as quickly as he did." The Grif feys have more than a father-son relationship. "We're friends," Griffey Jr.

said. "We've become more like brothers over the last four or five years," the elder Griffey said. "He's asked me for a lot more advice than he ever asked before." The Houston Astros were a major dealer, sending reliever Larry Andersen to Boston for minor-league third baseman Jeff Bagwell, 22, who is leading the Class AA Eastern League in hitting. The Astros also sent veteran second baseman Bill Doran to their NL West rivals, the division-leading Cincinnati Reds, for three players to be named later. The deadline for eligibility for postseason play was midnight EDT. The Doran deal came after he turned down a trade to the New York Mets, who then went out and acquired another veteran second baseman, Tommy Herr, from the Philadelphia Phillies for two minor-league prospects. Andersen, 37, appeared in 50 games with Houston this season, compiling a 5-2 record with six saves.

Doran, 32, rejected the deal to the Mets, saying he didn't have enough time to consider the implications. The deal was conditioned on the Mets being able to sign Doran, who can become a free agent after this season. "You don't do things at the last minute like he's done and then ask somebody to make a decision within in a few hours what your life is going to be like the next three or four years," Doran said. "That's no way to do business." Doran was hitting .288 with six homers and 32 RBI for the Astros. The Mets, who acquired veteran first baseman Pat Tabler from Kansas City late Thursday night, also got catcher Charlie O'Brien from Milwaukee.

Extension: Montreal Expos president Claude Brochu said yesterday he is optimistic that he will be able to convince owner Charles Bronfman and the team's board of directors to extend its Sept 1 deadline for a bid from local interests to buy the team. Big deal: Kevin Mitchell of the San Francisco Giants agreed to a new contract yesterday which calls for a $1 million signing bonus and $3.5 million from 1991-1994 for an average of $3.75 million per season. Skeetcr's number will be retired No. 4 no more! In a surprise announcement prior to last night's game, Nashville Sounds President Larry Schmittou announced that when ever-popular Skeeter Barnes plays his last game as a Sound, his No. 4 uniform will be retired.

In playing parts of four seasons here, Barnes has established club records for games (509), at-bats runs (235), hits (514), doubles (93) and runs batted in (232). "I believe he and Gene Menees are the two most popular players ever to play for the Sounds," Schmittou said. "He's been a very good player for this franchise." Barnes was modest in his response to a standing ovation of the crowd. "I'd like to thank everyone for everything, especially my teammates who have made so many things possible for me," said Barnes, a 33-year-old Cincinnati native who normally plays right field. Then, he ended up drawing another round of applause from the crowd.

"I hope we can end up winning this thing," he added. Sounds' management also present ed plagues recognizing trainer John Young, pitching coach Ray Rippel-meyer and Manager Pete Mackanin. Also prior to last night's game, the Sounds' Booster Club presented awards to Barnes (Most Valuable Player), Chris Hammond (Most Outstanding Pitcher), and outfielder Leo Garcia (Hustle). No radio: Tonight's Louisville-Nashville game will not be broadcast on the Sounds' network flagship station, WSLX-AM (980), because of a conflict with the Tennessee-Pacific ootbal game. The only station carrying play-by-play of the game is WDBL-FM (94.3) of Springfield.
