So, it was a deserving Rick Peterson who got the call from the Nashville Sounds to the parent Chicago White Sox yesterday to replace Dewey Robinson as bullpen coach. The White Sox won the American League Western Division title last year, but were third in the AL Central with a 35-31 record entering last night's game against Texas In Chicago. Chicago had lost eight of its past 10 games, with the bullpen contributing strongly to the team's demise. Roberto Hernandez, one of the game's top closers last season with 38 saves, has blown three of his past four opportunities. "Dewey definitely didn't fail," Chicago general manager Ron Schueler said.

"It's just that over the last couple of years I've had to send pys down to get fixed and Pete has an excellent program where he approaches the mental as much as he does the physical part of the game." The 39-year-old Peterson, in his sixth season with the White Sox organization, is the son of longtime Pittsburgh Pirate executive Harding Peterson. Under his tutelage, three Nashville pitchers are in the top sfe among the American Association earned run average leaders, four are in the top five in strikeouts and three are in the top five in wins. The Sounds' team ERA of 3.47 leads the league. "I don't really know what is actually happening here," Peterson said upon arriving in Chicago. "I think it's a matter of, 'Are people going to commit themselves to hitting the glove and driving the ball through the glove on a consistent When they do that this whole thing is going to be turned around, no question about it, because these guys are highly talented people." Robinson is expected to be reassigned within thje White Sox system, possibly sharing the duties vacated here by Peterson with minor league roving instructor Don Cooper.

I didn't quite have my best stuff.

I left some pitches up in the zone, and they hit them But us continually scoring runs kept me in the game." Drew Denson, Domingo Martinez, Gary Thurmah and Javier Ortiz each picked up three hits, with Denson drilling his 13th homer of the year and Thur-man coming within a single of hitting for the cycle. Nashville had 15 total hits. "Scott started kind of shakily, but he showed what he was made of and shut them down after the third inning," said Denson, who scored four runs. "I wish we all could have gotten two hits and saved some for (today), but it doesn't work that way." Iowa starter Rafael Novoa (2-5) took the loss, working 4 1-3 innings before being relieved by Mike Anderson. Behind Anderson came Craig Worthington -r who started as the Cubs' designated hitter and Rod Robertson, the starting shortstop.

The latter two limited Nashville to Just two runs, with Robertson blanking the Sounds in his two innings of work. Iowa led 5-3 midway through the third inning, before Martinez's two-run double in the bottom of the inning tied the contest Martinez later scored as the Sounds went ahead for good. Xpress stifles Barons HOOVER, Ala. Brad Radke pitched a two hit shutout as the Nashville Xpress handed the Birmingham Barons their eighth loss in 10 games, 2-0 last night in Southern League action. Most important for Nashville, the victory kept the Xpress (3-0) undefeated and in first-place in the West Division.

Former NBA great Michael Jordan was also shutdown by Radke. The former Chicago Bull star was 0-for-3 with a flyout and two groundouts. He had one assist in right field. Jordan's average fell to .204 (49-for-240) for the season. The game was scoreless until the sixth, when Andres Duncan was hit by an Al Levlne pitch with the bases loaded.

The Xpress added a run in the seventh when Ed Gerald scored on a single by Paul Russo. Radke (5) allowed a single by Kevin Coughlin in the first and an infield single by Kerry Valrie in the eighth. The Tampa, Fla, native had his best performance of the year. His two-hitter was the best performance that he has had in nearly two years of action with the Nashville. Levlne (5-5) took the loss.

The Xpress play their final game tonight against the Barons before heading to Memphis to begin a three-game series against the Chicks.
