2C THE TENNESSEAN FrtdayAfnU 19S3 SPORTS A.M. Compiled from staff, wire reports by Cynthia Stone if VV Dunn running for life, others BY KIM SW1NT Sports Writer Jerry Dunn has traded one addiction for another. Dunn, 47, was an alcoholic 10 years ago; today, he is a runner. "I had my last drink on my 37th birthday and haven't had one since," he said. When Dunn, a massage therapist from Indianapolis, put the bottle down and laced up his running Gillingham chosen MVP Heidi Gillingham, the second All-American in Van-derbilt women's basketball history, was selected the Most Valuable Player at the team's annual award banquet last night Gillingham, a 6-10 sophomore center, led the Commodores in scoring with 14.3 points per game and in rebounding with 7 rpg.

as Vandy enjoyed its most successful season. All-time leading scorer Wendy Scholtens is Vanderbilt's other All-American. Other awards: senior Renee Allen, spirit award; senior Misty Lamb, loyalty award; senior Shelley Jar-rard, best defensive player, and sophomore point guard Rhonda Blades, most improved. VU MEN HONORED Kevin Anglin, Bryan Milburn and Bruce Elder were selected to the 1993 SEC Basketball Academic Honor Roll. Anglin and Elder were honored for the third straight year.

It was the first such honor for Milburn. TAR HEEL RECRUIT-Rasheed Wallace, a 6-foot-11 center from Philadelphia who was USA Today's high school player of the year, has verbally committed to national champion North Carolina. He can sign next Wednesday. shoes, he was able to feed "his ad dictive personality" and at the same time, help others. One beneficiary of Dunn's run fj tpfc ning is Habitat for Humanity International.

Lipscomb went on to win the game 1 1-1, but Piper twisted an ankle on the slide. Rodgers calls it quits In his last marathon, Bill Rodgers wilted in the heat and humidity of Vietnam and walked the final three miles. In his last race, two weeks ago, he took such a pounding he still feels the effects. His face remains youthful-looking and animated, showing few traces of the 20 years that have passed since he ran his first marathon.

His body, though, has taken a beating through two decades of long-distance training. So yesterday, at age 45, Rodgers announced his retirement from the sport he once dominated. Bengals rape trial to jury McEnroe blasts Gorman fatRwiInt years a8 Dunn ran frm WMnMdey: TVnduti San Francisco to Washington, D.C IhundaytOutdoon (2,700 miles) to raise funds for the MdqrcFltMM organization. In another fund-raising effort, Dunn ran across his home state in less than 30 hours. This year, Dunn plans to run 93 marathons (2,436.2 miles).

If he is successful he will break the unofficial one-year record of 87 by England's Steve Edwards in 1989. Dunn is the same age as his father was at the time of his death. "I was at my father's side when he died at the age of 47 from a heart attack," he said. "The heart attack was no doubt a result of an extremely unhealthy lifestyle. In fact, his last requests were a glass of water and a cigarette.

"I want others to realize you don't have to die young. We can change and turn our lives around." Dunn began his marathon quest in Jacksonville, and plans to wrap things up in Honolulu on Dec. 17. Miami, Boston, Los Angeles, Washington, Chicago, New York, and Tucson, are among the stops he'll make this year. In order to accomplish his goal of 93 marathons, Dunn will have to run each marathon course twice and run consecutive half-marathon races.

There are not 93 marathons scheduled in the country during the year. Dunn was in Nashville last month and ran in the Music City Marathon, his 22nd of the year. During his first turn on the course, Dunn heard 60-year-old, Gerald Hassell calling for help. Hassell had fallen and broken his hip. Dunn was able to flag down a motorist down in order to get help for Hassell, who was later taken to St Thomas Hospital.

Dunn is able to devote himself to running thanks to the sponsorship of Power Bar and Exceed. Dunn said he hoped his story would inspire others to challenge their limits and not limit their challenges. "I don't want to grow old wishing, instead of having done," Dunn said. The release agreement signed for $30,000 by a woman who said she was gang-raped by Cincinnati Bengals players should be thrown out so she can sue for damages, her lawyer, Victoria Vreeland, told federal Jurors in closing arguments yesterday. Defense lawyers contend the release is a binding agreement.

The six-member jury will decide whether the woman can proceed with a civil lawsuit seeking damages from the NFL club and 19 current or former players. KOSAR EXTENSION The Cleveland Browns and quarterback Bernie Kosar have an agreement to extend his contract four more years through 1999, team vice president David Modell said. Kosar, 29, made about $2 million last season. John McEnroe said he did most of the coaching when the United States won the Davis Cup last November. However, he stopped short of saying he'd like the job permanently.

McEnroe said in yesterday's Los Angeles Times that he believes captain orn Gorman won't return in 1994 after the United States lost to Australia In a first-round Davis Cup match two weeks ago. "I don't think there's a chance in hell Gorman will be back next year," McEnroe said. "And if there is, it would be the biggest Joke of all time. I mean, enough is enough. Eight years." JAPAN OPEN Jonathan Stark, ranked No.

Pete Sampras fired 17 service aces and beat Frenchman Guillaume Raoux, 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3 in a third-round match. Sampras can claim the top spot in the computer listings if he beats David Wheaton in today's quarterfinals. Vandy hosts Music City event Vanderbilt golf coach Mason Rudolph hopes newcomer Michael King will put a drive in his Commodore club. King, a freshman walk-on, played well enough in a recent qualifying round to earn himself a spot on Vandy's five-man team in this weekend's Music City Intercollegiate Golf Tournament at Opryland's Springhouse Golf Gub.

The tournament begins today and runs through Sunday with action beginning each day at 8 a.m. Eighteen teams will participate in the tourney. Ole Miss outslugs MTSU 14-11 Mississippi outslugged Middle Tennessee State last night 14-11 in Murfreesboro in a game that featured 11 home runs between the teams. David Delluci and Richie Harrelson had a pair of homers for Ole Miss (17-9) while Mudcat Brewer pounded two for MTSU 12-16. The Raiders had back-to-back-to-back homers in the third from Steve Finley, Brewer and Jason Maxwell.

The Rebels countered with consecutive homers from Delluci and David Blevins in the fifth. Cook deposits 10 birdies Jeff Cook, in his fourth month on the PGA Tour, had 10 birdies yesterday during a round of 6-under 64 to take the first-round lead in the Deposit Guaranty Golf Classic. Only half of the field had completed the first round when lightning and rain forced play to be suspended. 3-POINT RECORD-Miami's Brian Shaw set an NBA record with 10 3-pointers (out of 14 shots) as the Heat beat Milwaukee 117-92. Dale Ellis and Michael Adams each had nine in a game.

A lights-out opening to Sounds season Sounds 8, Cubs 5 Cubs 5, Xpress 3 By ANTHONY COLEMAN Sports Writer The Nashville Sounds are hoping tthat a couple of glitches in their pre-garne show won't reflect their season. I First, a little drizzle caused some 'concern that the game might be played in a deluge or perhaps even cause a postponement But the rain subsided, and the players came out and were NASHVKII The Sounds then blasted fireworks after the national anthem, sung by country music star Vince Gill. Gill missed a line in the song. After that, the lights in Greer Stadium shut down after overloading. The crowd had to sit in darkness for a short period while the lights regenerated themselves.

"It's nothing major," Sounds President Larry Schmittou said about the lights. "If they go out, it takes between 5-7 minutes for them to warm back up. It's always that way. It didn't take long for them to get them back working right" But the fans didn't seem to mind the small annoyances. They were to busy being awed by the new guitar-shaped scoreboard.

"The scoreboard is perhaps the best thing that we have ever done here," said Walter Nipper, one of the owners of the Sounds. Changes: Chicago White Sox roving minor league pitching instructor Don Cooper was in attendance last night and he noted Greer Stadium has changed greatly since 1980, when he played for the Sounds. "The field has been moved out the dugouts are sunken and the press box was small. There were no skyboxes or restaurant And there are a lot more seats here than there were."
