friUyJULY24.1992 THE TENNESSEAN 5B HOLT, Mrs. Virginia Petway De Planners blamed with wimping out on sign-cleanup ordinance cans about what is proposed," Henry said. "I don't think they really want to have it rushed through." "We've even got some things we think need to be corrected. There are some tough decisions that have to be made, and the committee was apparently unwilling to try to make those Wednesday night." West raised the sign issue yesterday as the zoning board prepared to hear an appeal from a firm that wanted to erect a sign that would be illegal under the proposed ordinance. He suggested the board deny that part of the two-part request In that way, West said, the business owner would have to appeal directly to Metro Council.

"This may be an excellent opportunity for the council to speak on this," West said. The board took West up on his suggestion and denied that part of the request West said after the meeting that the Planning Committee and Metro Council have to decide whether to move ahead on the sign setback issue or move on to something else. the existing sign ordinance with the provison that the signs would have to be brought into compliance with the new ordinance if the council approved one within six months. That deadline won't be met now. The issue has been a political hot potato pitched from one council to the next over the years.

City councils have dragged their feet ever since a 1974 law was passed requiring that signs be set back 15-feet from the street. That still hasn't happened. In the meantime, more than 10,000 signs have be added along Nashville's major thoroughfares. Councilwoman Sherry Jones, chairwoman of the Planning Committee, could not be reached for comment yesterday. Shawn Henry, a Metro planner, said he did not interpret the committee's action as an attempt to cut and run.

"I think that people are now becoming more aware of this proposed sign ordinance and that a lot of people are offering comments to Sherry Jones and the other politi- Hanover, In. Lafayette, Tn. Service entrusted to PATTON BROTHERS FUNERAL DIRECTORS CREDIT CARDS HONORED Tasteful Sympathy c4 Arrangements (i 2410 West End Ave By SHEILA W1SSNER Staff Writer Metro Council's Planning Committee wimped out when it deferred action this week on a proposed ordinance aimed at cleaning up sign clutter, a zoning official said yesterday. Because of that Metro Council will not meet a deadline the Board of Zoning Appeals set to force some action on the issue, Zoning Administrator Sonny West told the board.

The committee decided at a meeting Tuesday to cancel a Wednesday meeting called to recommend a final version of the sign ordinance for a public hearing in September. Now the public hearing has been delayed until November, West said. "For some reason, they just rolled over and played dead." Some 10,000 signs across Davidson County would have to be moved farther away from the road if the proposed ordinance as currently drafted makes it through the council.
