Alsup, fulfilled his regular appointment at this place last Sunday and Sunday night Ex-Judge J. T. Wallen, an old citizen of this county has leen greeting friends in town this week. Judges, F. J.

Hooper, V. T. Cunningham and Peter Solbenr are attending circuit court this w-k. Rev. B.

F. Alsup and family returned Friday from a visit with friends and relatives count v. Morgan John Wrinkle, an old and highly resjxeted citizen of Green Town-hip transacted business in town Saturday. Commissioner C. I).

Stoothoir has purchased a one half interest in the field Mail and will take charge ot mechanical department of the paper. Samuel Blackwell, who has been sick for some time past, at his homo near here, with typhoid fever, is still very low, though it is thought that he will recover. Wm. Howard, dealer in Hardware, Drugs, School Books etc. is still at the old stand ready to ac-commodate his customers with first class goods at reasonable prices.

Prof. J. W. Armstrong, principal of Weaubleau Public Schools, arrived in town Friday night and remained until Sunday afternoon. He reports everything flourishing at Weaubleau.

A basket supper will be given at the church in Hermitage, on Thanksgiving The proceeds of the suppor will be for the benefit of Rev. R. A. Anderson the pastor of the M. E.

church. We are informed that the brick kiln, ujion which Contractor has had a force of hands at work for some time past, will be tired the last of the week. There are about 7.V(iii brick in the kiln. A supper will be given by the ladies of Hermitage, Friday night Nov. and will conrist of oysters, fruits, cakes, etc.

The proceeds of the supper will be used to purchase seats for tho church. Capt. W. L. Snidow, one of the stalwart Republicans, and for many years tho Representative of this county in tho Missouri Legislature, was in town -Monday and Tuesday and made this office a very agreeable call.

0, lsi5, Eflie, wifo of Alfred Green. The deceased had been in poor health for a long while, but had lmrne her sufferings with patient forti tude. The bereaved husband and relatives have the svmpathv of! their many friends in their sad af-i fl-Minn rest Sunday afternoon in the Iiowcr Chapel cemetery. A great many people in Holivar have an idea that this part of the county is a sort of isolated, under-sirahle, worthless place; that is so far from the railroad that the progressive people eschew it, but let me tell you, good people, this part of the county, and the south part of Hickory county is progressing faster than you arc perhaps aware. Last season Pittsburg erected a fine roller mill, and now, in addition to the two stores already there, a new firm is erecting a new store building 24x50, in which they purpose to place a complete stock of goods.

Barnett, a prominent merchant nf Cross-Timbers, is attending circuit court. Dr. Gentry, one cf the leading physicians of Weaubleau, was in the city Tuesday. A big crowd of witnesses in the slander case against A. IL Fugate are in town to-day.

Commissioner C. D. Tharp and wife spent Monday and Tuesd ay visiting friends at Weaubleau. Capt. D.

J. Irwin, the rustling real estate man of Weatland, made our sanctum a business call while in town Monday. Deputy sheriff John Bartshe, returned last week from the S. S. convention at Sedalia.

He reports a very pleasant and profitable time. Work on the court house was considerably retarded last week on account of rain. Monday morning some of the hands 'struck' for higher wages, but by Tuesday morning a sufficient force was obtained to resume business, and the work is now progressing nicely. John B. McClure, of Eldorado Springs a former citizen of this county is attending Circuit court this week.

Inks, prominent merchants of Preston, were attending to matters in circut court to-day. Wrn. McCrackcn, the popular cashier of the Bank of Cross-Timbers, accompanied by his wife are visiting friends in town to-day. Messrs Owens and Blair, have altout completed the wood work of W. I j.

Pitts' new dwelling and Vannord strand Bros, the plaster rs, are at work. The somewhat extensively advertised sign of this office was received Tuesday and placed in position. Harvey and Nense, the accompli shed painters of Cross-Timbers, did tho work. Since the 1st day of November, 1H names have been a Ide I to our subscription list. To all of these friends wo are sincerely thankful, and shall try to give them a paper worthy of their patronage.

Judge A. R. Miller and wife, of Buffalo, nre in tho city. Mr. Miller was formerly a resident of Hermitage, but has been living at Buffalo for several years, and in 1 was elected Judge of the Probate court of Dallas county.

A tt'y. Geo. S.SelviJire,of Mead Center Kansas, is in attendance at Circuit court ami greeting his many Hickory county friends this week. He was for a number of years a resilient of Hermitage, and for four years years was Judge of the Probate Court of this county. Mitchner of Cross-Timbers informs us that Rev. Charles Bell, who lived some distance Nort h-east of that place, was burned in his house Sundav nijrht. The unfortunate man lived all alone, and when his neighlxrs arrived at tho scene of tho conflagration, all that remained to tell the sad story, was the smoking ruins in which were found the Ixmes of the hermit preacher. The Annual convention of tho Missouri State Sunday School As sociation which met in the tirst M. E.

church, Sedalia, Wednesday Nov. 0th and closed Friday Nov. Sth, was an interesting occasion. Tho address of welcome was delivered by Louis Hoffman, of Sedalia, and the resjwnso by Rev. O.

M. Stewart, D. D. of St. Louis, and the convention was favored with a number of other excellent addresses.

The gold banner was awarded to Stone county and the silver banner to Jasper county. Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows: President, D. R. Wolfe, St. Louis; Secretary, Robt Rutlege, St.

Louisj Treas. Win. Randolph, St. Louis, The reports show much progress during the last year, and that Missouri now takes the lead in Sunday school work. The closing exercises consisted of a number of hort addresses.
