This meant, when I anyone was picked up, they had to be transferred immediately to a jail in one of the surrounding counties. Now, with no cost to the taxpayers, we have a jail that meets all state and federal standards as a 48-hour holding facility. (2) Two years ago, the Carter County budget was tight, so to help cut costs, the Sheriff's Office and I the Prosecuting Attorney's Office were combined. I found this to, also, be a big help to the people because all of the information needed by most I people can be obtained in one office. (3) We now have county cars, which have also proven to be a savings to the county.

These cars were also bought at no expense to the county. (4) We now have a new $6,000 radio system which was purchased with funds obtained through a grant from the U.S. Forest Service. I (5) We have a call diverter, which was purchased with a $1,000 grant from the U.S. Forest Service.

This allows phone calls coming into the Sheriff's Office after hours, to be diverted to the home of one of the deputies. (6) A night patrol has been set up in Carter County since funds became available approximately three months ago. (7) A Special Deputy program was set up over three years ago. These men are honest, hardworking men that are willing to donate whatever time is necessary to keep Carter County a safe place to live. (8) I have set up a program within the schools of this county to make children aware of the effects and consequences of drugs and drug abuse.

(9) I have attended training schools on several occasions in order to upgrade, update and stay in tune with the modern technology that is swiftly becoming a way of life in law enforcement. (10) I assisted in developing a community service program, which means that if someone commits a crime against the State, they may have to work for the public, such as in the library, for the County, or for the cities. Re-Elect Carter-Butler County Line News By JEAN CARTER It seems that most of us had guests in for the weekend, which made for lots of cooking, barbecuing and making ice cream, which made an enjoyable Fourth of July. Rev. and Mrs.

Amos Berry were pleased to have their grandson, Greg Laughlin of St. Louis, come, along with his mother, Blanch, and all enjoyed homemade ice cream. I asked Mrs. Berry about her granddaughter, Carrie (Berry) Colvin and family; they're fine and both working every day. Kevin Lovette enjoyed a few days' visit, from the naval base in Memphis, with his parents, LeeRoy and Kathy and other family members.

Jack and Betty Caruthers of Steele spent some time with her brother Leonard and Louise Sandage. On the 4th, they prepared lots of eats, including catfish, barbecuing and ice cream. Their son, Ralph, Linda. Brad and Matt I have worked closely with and established a good relationship with the FBI, the Highway Patrol, the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms), and all of the surrounding counties in order to help bring criminals to justice in a swifter and more efficient manner. I don't think that anyone who runs for public office should get into a "Mud-Slinging" campaign.

I feel that anyone running for office should be doing it for a specific reason. My reason is that I want to continue to make this county a safer, drug-free county, where you and myself and all of our kinfolk can live in peace and raise our families. I feel that "Mud-Slinging" reflects on the character of the person involved in the campaign. The choice you make this year, you will have to live with for four years to come. So, I'm asking you to think about it carefully.

My promise to you, the voters, is to work for you in the future as I have in the past. PAYNE Democratic Candidate For Western District Commissioner Your Vote and Support Appreciated! Dr. J. G. Hunt Optometrist Doniphan, Monday thru Saturday 9 a.m.
