PRe 8 The Current luteal, Van Buren, Thursday, March 5, 1987 I I What About The Good Things? I If vou listen to the news these days and read the papers, it would I i a i rvo rti i seem that everything is baa ana getting worse ism. nvvm 0-o oi I evervthinn vou hear is how bad everything is. It's rather difficult to keep a positive attitude in the face of all the gloom and doom. The fact is we live in the greatest country on the face of the earth. Wc are the 1 is we live in tne greatest country on mc waim.

ait mc i most prosperous nation known to mankind. We are the best housed, best educated, and well fed people alive. Oh sure, people gripe and grumble. They only have two cars, five dogs, a color TV, and a healthy government check, but it could be much worse. What if they had to work and provide for themselves? 2 The good thing is all our people are not like that.

We have many good people who work hard, pay their debts, believe in God and still love the U.S.A. We would like to mention that not all the kids have gone bad either! Many of our young people say "no" to drugs, alco- hoi, and pre-marital sex. We have many young people who study hard and they are blessed with one of the best schools in this area of the state. i We are also fortunate to live in a community where people in need I find a helping hand and neighbors care about one another. 1 think it's lime we think about the "good things." God has blessed us in a wonderful way and we need to praise him 'more.

We welcome you to praise him with us at Ellsinore First Baptist Church L. We Care!" and Mr. and Mrs. Ezra Hurt of Doniphan were all there and spent an enjoyable afternoon visiting. Rolla Johnson's brother, Homer Johnson of Oceanside, passed away March 1st.

Our sympathy is with the family. Several birthdays of Fremont folks on Feb. 28th: Rolla Johnson, August Rothlisberger, Pam Crass, Jim Rodebush, and Sharon Ruth Norris. Have lots more happy birthdays, folks. she goes with a walker and wheelchair.

Mrs. John Jones went to St. Louis to bring John home. She said he still was not eating very well. Mrs.

Erma Hardwick had to make a second trip to the doctor with her earache, but says this Tuesday morning that it was better. Mrs. Myrtle Vermillion was taken to the Mtn. View Hospital Thursday morning by ambulance. The doctor says she has pneumonia in one lung.

Mrs. Ruby Ford drove to Poplar Bluff last Sunday afternoon and spent the night with her son and wife, Melvin and Daisy Ford, and went to see her doctor Monday before coming home. Gene Burke had the misfortune of getting his arm cut with a power saw. His sister, Clara Rothlisberger, rushed him to the doctor who gave "him seven stitches and dressed it. Gene said he was fine now.

Mrs. David Crouch and children Aaron and Jennifer of St. Charles visited at my home Saturday evening. She also brought a nephew, Robert Townsley, and one of his friends, Joby Sanders, of Van Buren along for the ride. Anita's mother, Mrs.

Mildred Shupe, has been pretty sick, so Anita came to see her. 1 talked to Jerry Black and she said Elmer is doing pretty good and that she is just fine. Jerry took Elmer to Salem on Thursday to the doctor. Norma Massie tells me that Bertie Smith is doing fair and we are glad to hear that, Bertie. Here it is March 1st: cloudy, windy and really cold.

So guess March is coming in like a lion, hopefully it will go out like a lamb. Had four visitors at church, Mrs. Gertrude Greene, and Mr. and Mrs. Kelly Burke and Ferrell Burke of Van Buren.

and Mrs. Edward Jones, all of Fremont. Edward is to go to the doctor and get a check-up on his foot. Bro. Raymond and Milda Sconce's grandson Weldon came to church with them today.

He attends school at Bolivar. It was nice to have him at church. We miss two of our favortie folks, Joy and Wanda Buxton of Van Buren. They left Saturday morning to go to the state of Washington to work. This is a fine country to live in, but there is not very much work, and bills have to be paid, so we lose our favorite folks.

Visiting Mrs. Lily McDowell were her son and family, Mr. and Mrs. Earl McDowell, and son David of Mansfield, and Mr. and Mrs.

Chuck Easley of Houston. Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Burke celebrated their 57th wedding anni- East Carter R-2 Board Meeting Report The East Carter R-2 Board of Education met in regular session on the evening of Feb. 16, 1987, and purchased school buses, changed the date of graduation, heard a report regarding drivers education and also a request regarding the purchase of choir and band uniforms.

The board continued their switch to diesel-powered school buses by purchasing four new International buses which should be delivered in August of this year. Allied Bus Company of Nixa, was the successful bidder. When these new buses are delivered, the district will be halfway through the transition to diesel. The three diesel buses that were bought last year are performing very well and are much more economical to operate. In order to accomodate churches in the area and also friends and relatives of graduates who must travel long distances, the board voted to move high school graduation from the traditional Sunday evening to Saturday evening.

Graduation this year is now scheduled for May 16, 1987. Supt. Knodell reported to the board that the administration is looking into the possibility of having a drivers education program next school year. Negotiations are underway with car dealers who might provide a car for the program. Also, a search is underway for a teacher.

Many parents and students have inquired about the possibility of beginning drivers education, and this is why the study is now underway. Mrs. Beth Duckett spoke with the board again about the band boosters' request that the school purchase new choir and band uniforms. She gave the board prices to consider and chairman of the board, Ron Cates, stated that the board would consider the proposal and make a decision as soon as possible. The next regular board meeting is scheduled for March 16, 1987.

This is one week later than normal due to some board members being out of town on the second Monday, which is the regular meeting time.
