Outfielder Mark Blythe, the sixth-leading home run hitter in UK history, and catcher Keith Conrad each belted two-run homers for the Wildcats. The defeat dropped eighth-place Vandy to a 4-8-1 record in the SEC ' (17-12-1 overall) heading into the last two games of the weekend series today. Kentucky improved to 6-7, 16-3-1. Yesterday's twinbill was cut back to just a nine-inning game due to a delayed start because of weather conditions. A seven-inning contest between the teams will start at noon today at McGugin Field, followed by a regula-tiongame. Vandy had taken a 3-0 lead in the Commodores' first at-bat yesterday, with runs driven in by Jamie Abbgy, Brad Shoemaker and Rick Holt But Kentucky jumped to a 6-3 advantage after Vanderbilt starter Jim Heins opened the gates by walking the first two batters in the top of the third. Roger Gum doubled in both of those runners, before Blythe's eighth roundtripper of the year scored Sam Taylor, who had singled with one out A Vandy error and consecutive singles allowed by Heins contributed to two more runs in the inning. In the bottom of the third, Vanderbilt pulled within 6-5 on Rick Holt's single, followed by catcher Bart King's two-run shot over the fence in left field. Newton has marked off one name as a possible basketball coach at Kentucky CM. Newton. "This is too important a time to get into an interim situation," Newton told reporters Friday at Wildcat Lodge. "I didn't take the athletics director job as interim. This is career-ending for me. "We're going to build a home here. We're going to retire here. I have no thought of coaching." Newton, who officially became the school s athletics director on April 1 after coaching at Vanderbilt, said the search for a new coach to replace Ed die Sutton has been time consuming. He reiterated that the school is looking for a coach "who can win, someone who has demonstrated the ability to recruit and to coach. I think you have to have both in order to have a winning program at this level." Newton also said that he wants a coach "who believes in the concept of the student-athlete. . .Someone who works with players, rather than using players. Someone who has a history of operating within rules and someone who understands the nature of this program from a visibility standpoint because it is a high visibility program." Maybe Loyola Marymount basketball Coach Paul Westhead has those characteristics. According to the Lexington Herald- Leader, Westhead said he and New ton discussed the job during the Final Four in Seattle. Newton said Westhead "is somewhere" on the list of candidates. 'Somewhere' is good enough for Westhead. He welcomes the chance to coach the Wildcats. "Especially because of Kentucky's incredible reputation," Westhead said. "I'd be interested. In the pro world, it would be as if the Celtics called and asked, 'Would you be inter ested in being our coach?' Kentucky certainly has that same image collegi- ately." Westhead is known for his fast-break style, something Newton has said he wants for Kentucky. -il)i'ilHHiK,liyi):)):tHl,W SMS.
