Fort Wayne will now be supplied with as good gas light as any city in the country. We are informed by Mr. Guldlin, the president of tlio Western Gas Construction company, that his company is now bnildiug'six of same kind of apparatus as they have built, for this "city and that they havo IT IS DAMEEOUS. the Old Hoagland Street School Building TJnsafe. Citizens ol the Sixth Ward Alarmed--What lr Irwin Thinks.

Probably our subscribers have noticed with as much pleasure as ourselves, the marked improvement; in the quality of tho artificial gab throughout the city last night; although the gaa furnished for the last few months had been better than before in Fort Wayne, tho change yesterday was decidedly marked. On inquiiy at the gas works to-day, we learned that it is owing to the starting up and operation of the now machinery which has been installed for the gas compauv by the Western Gas Construction company, whoso works arc located on the Pennsylvania railroad, on the east side of the city. The Fort Wayne Gas Light company contracted a couple of months There have been, from time to time, extending over a period of some dozen years, complaints coming from paionts who have sent their children to the public school on Hoagland street. A well known citizen of the Siith ward, in conversation a GAZETTE leporter, said yesterday: "If you want to make citizens of "the southwestern part rise up and call the newspaper blessed, they should call attention in no small way to the unsafe condition of tho Hoagland slrqet building at present. I belio-i that a hard likely to wreck the building at any tima.

Jn my opinion the old shell is positively unsafe and should be condemned." The speaker is a practical carpenter, and should know whereof he speaks. The Hoagland street school was not built for educational purposes but originally for a dwelling. Additions put to it at one time and another havo made accommodation for tho increasing number of pupils. The building is two stories high and entirely frame Had a pile of boards been put up to ex- hibic tho merit of a patent lire extinguisher, it could not be moie ot a lire trap. Thoro are two stairways in the building, but a lire once started, those would rjuiekly cut off all hope of escape to thoso in thp rooms above not to speak of the panic that always attends a school houac lire.

To add to tho dangeia of a con- llagiation there ih a coal lire in each loom. Whether it is unsafe to put natural gas or a furnace in the hhackely old pile is not known, but the indications aro to that Fiom tho mansard roof to the basement every joint and member of tho ancient heap of boaids is loose. When the gentle zephyrs of summei waft Hiptpsolves against the windows there is' a light rattle that reminds one of rain on a roof at night, but when old Boieas bustles up and pours his furies ou the aides of tho old school house, tho effect is as that of a brass band playing out of tune. This rattle and bang nop be put of pla.co pr interfere wjth.work in a boilpr shop, but in a school house it js haidly conducive to sfudy. When tho blasts of winlci sweep about the Hoagland school the teachers and such of the pupils as aro old enough to comprehend their danpei, would ljuakp with terror were they not lUairnerf jcast much shaking would bung flown tho' niln of and bury thorn beneath the dobils.

Competent judges have declared tho building to bo unsafe and i for a school house. A itioiig wind would lyrpck the place and a fire would spread ga jn tinder box. Tho chances for getting out jjliye uncloi cither of thong ciicunistanccs wou)J be yery poor. It is said a while tho abbes of Clay school building, so long a terrop to past side parents, woiu still smouldering, Dr. j.

S. Irwin, superintendent of schools, was beard jnljmate that his only regret was that tlio Iloag. land school was not taken also Tho i i should bo looked after, for certainly an investigation could do no harm. ago with this young, aggressive firm for tho installation of one of their settings of Improved Lowe Water Gas apparatus. This was'completed and put operation yesterday with the above noted icsults.

A short description of the machine and its operation will be of interest to our readers, in view of the great improvement which it makes in the quality of gas over the old method of manufacture. The machine consists of four largo shells (cylinders) made of steel, two of them being tho generator and superheater, and being lined with hre brick. In these two the gas is made; the other two are called the sciubber and condenser, and aro used for cleaning the gas after it has been manufactured in tho generator and superheater. Tho material used consists of coke, which is put into the generator and from which the body of the gas is made, after which it is enriched with oil or naphtha as it passes through the The whole apparatus is installed 'in half the space formerly occupied by tart of the coal gas retorts in whick the gas has been made for the city up to the present time. To shoiv the increase in capacity of tho new apparatus over the old style of making gas, it is only necessary to say that in the same floor space as previously occupied, more than three times tho gas can be made per day.

Everything about the' loom is neat and clean, and the parts of the ap- paiatus which are handled by the operatois are nickle plated and polished; in fact, to the casual observer, there is no -evidence that the process of gas making is going on and it almost impossible to make any comparison which will conyey an idea of a difference between the new method the dirty, grimy and smoky work of making- gas by the old process. Tho method of manufacture is fill tho geneiator full of coke, which is lighted at; the bottom and then to turn on an aii blast, which is furnished i by an engine and blower located the boiler room, at the west side of tho generator room. This brings the coke in the generator up to a while heat and the gases produced by thisi blast are carried over by a aheady operating or under course of construction over twenty-one of those machines, all installed within the last couple of ycais, and that thoy havo mvauably had the same success i starting and 'operating them as they have experienced with the plant in this city. His company, this fall, will double the capacity of their machine shop in tho east end in order to provide for the increasing amount of their business in this direction. The Fort Wayne Gas Light company, under the efficient direction of Mr.

Paul, has added a number of details of machinery, all of which were contracted for with, and furnished by. The Western Gas Con- stiucuon company. A marked improvement in the quality of gas was noted a couple of months ago when tho new interest took charge of tho' works, and tho quality supplied was as good as was possible to furnish with the old style of apparatus had, been installed a number of years 'age. It was not possible however, to enrich the gas beyond a'certain point without giving it a to smoke and this, was particularly noticeable in buildings where the piping was smairand tho pressure consequently cut down below the necessary to properly burn tho "gas. With tho improvements, however, which have now beon put in operation, it is possible to.givo a cent, better ligjlt than formerly, without any of this tendency to smoke, and this Is now being done and at no expense to the 1 consumer.

With this usual custom of giving his customers the -best of satisfac- tio'n, Mr. Paul has also started the introduction of the Welsbach light for use on artificial'gas. A light burning in the Gas company's office ou'Superior street, attests the groat superioiity'of this form of illumination over any other artificial light. Artificial gas is peculiarly adapted for use in the Wels oach light owing to its purity and steadiness of pressure and constant eojual quality. Tho burner on exhibition in the gas company's office consumes three feet of gas per hour and gives with this a perfectly wbito light of sixty candle This is twenty candle power per foot of gas, and when it is Considered that a foot of gas burned in the'brdinary manner will give about four toiGvc candle power, and that even at that compaiativoly low rate of light, it is able to successfully compete with the electric light, vasT su porionty of olsbach iigntoii gas over any other, form of artificial light is at onco apparent.

The Welsbach light on natural has not proved anything like is successful as, on the artificial which, is owing to the un- qualify nn pressure of the '1 gas and the consequent excessive wear on the metal, which makes the duration ol them also very.much less than on tho artificial WENT TO Henry Lehr and Harry Hammil Awaiting Examination. The account of the anest of Henry Lehr and Ilarry Hammil on suspicion of having robbed the safe in the Eckort meat market was printed yes- toiday.

During the morning an affidavit was sworn to before Mayor Oakley by Henry Kanning, charging both Lehr and Ilammil with grand larceny in stealing $165. The case was set for tiial at 2 p. and a bond of $1,000 each was placed. The men wore unable to furnish it and wout to jail. At 2 o'clock a large crowd of people was in tho mayor's court room.

Elmer Leonard appeared for Hamuiil; J. Robinson and G- Colerick for Lehr, and Deputy Prosecutor Charles Ryan and Henry Colorick for the state. AiHdavits for a change of venue to some justice of the pcaoo in the township, were at once presented by the defendants. The cause assigned for tho change was interest and prejudice. Mayor Oakley sent the case to Justice France, and set the preliminary for 8 o'clock Monday morning.

Tho counsel for the defense asked that, the bond be placed at not too high liguies, nnd suggested that the circuit court, in cases of this kind, the practice was to make the The amount was satisfactory to the stale, and the mayor so ordeicd it.
