It had emptied faster than a barrel with the plug pulled out. The camp has no swimming pool.

So for a time it looked like no dam, no swim for 1966 campers. But LeTourneau of Longview, Upshur County Commissioner Milton Langford and Gilmer City Manager Fred Odom came to the rescue. Jake Dupree, Gilmer member of the East Texas Area board of directors for Camp Fire, helped to coordinate their efforts. LeTourneau sent some giant earth-moving equipment to reconstruct the dam. When the equipment was being removed by trailer- truck, a maintainer fell off the trailer and dug a gaping hole in the camp road, which wasn't in very good shape to begin with.

County and city road equipment came in and fixed the road, and now Camp Fire officials say the camp is in top shape for the of the first session the second week in June. COMMENT By Emory Memorial Day Holidays are started at different times for various reasons.

Some of them "catch on" because they have a strong emotional significance. Memorial Day is one of these. Memorial Day began as Decoration Day, and was observed by the placing of flowers on Civil War graves. It was not a major holiday in the beginning, but somehow it grew over the years, maybe because there were more wars and more American cemeteries around the world, filled with white crosses. Now it's called Memorial Day, and it's become one of our most important national holidays.

But it is unique among all of our importnat days, for its real purpose will be fulfilled when it loses its reason for being, when it has made people remember the horror of wnr enough to put an end to it forever.
