REESE 17 CHARLES RICHARD 1U RRKLL A leading business man of Steuben County asked me where I stood on Sunday Closing. I answered that I would not support the enforcement the Indiana Sunday Law otherwise known as the Sunday Blue Law. That question and an article in the April 13, Fort Wayne News-Sentinel stating that the Michigan Senate had passed a law requiring all retail stores to close on either Saturday or Sunday gave life to what I regarded a dead issue.

This Michigan Bill was passed under the leadership of one of their Great State Senators who threatened to stop the Tigers from playing Sunday Baseball, prohibited by their present law. It is regret-able that a small powerful group of retail business men, for whom Sunday operation would be profitless, wish to stiffle competion by seeking the intervention of the legislature, or as in Gary, South Bend, Indianapolis and Fort Wayne the intervention of the law enforcement organization. The Indianapolis Star published an article this winter written by a top executive of a Mich. Marion Brott of Huntington spent the week end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs.

and Mrs. Stephen White of Bloomington were dinner guests of their grandparents Mr. and leading downtown department store who, after a classical review of the history of the Indiana Sunday Law, stated he supported its enforcement because he believed an employee needed one day each week to rest. However his lofty concern for the welfare of the employee vanished a few weeks later when he announced the opening of the firm's suburban stores on Sunday. The attempted enforcement of the Indiana Sunday Law passed in 1905 and liberalized in 1912 to permit the game of baseball and allow children under the age of 14 to play games, makes me recall two other experiences while teaching at Tri-State College a few years ago.

One was the defense of a student charged with the violation of an Angola City Ordnance passed in 1912 prohibiting the operation of an automobile on the streets of Angola in excess of 15 miles per hour. The other was the prosecution of a truckdriver for violation of a 1930 weight restriction Ohio. Mrs. Ivah Kope has returned home after spending the winter in Florida. However still lingering with us are those who search the forgotten pages of the law for skeletons to promote their selfish interests. They have successfully enlisted in their unholy crusade State Legislatures, Prosecuting Attorneys, and Courts all of whom have demonstrated themselves to be among the spineless wonders of the law. The Prosecuting Attorney in Indiana is elected by the people whom it is his duty to represent.

He is endowed by law with the right of acting according to his own judgment. For the abuse of that right he is answerable only to his God and YOU at the next election. YOU MUST MAKE THE CHOICE and family and Mrs. Ava Rhoades and family before going to their home. Mr.
