www.tennessean.com THE TENNESSEAN Thursday, May 22, 2003 5B TENNESSEE MIDSTATE MADISON AP New Jersey donations Larry Meegan of Jackson, N.J., pulls bags of donated goods from the trunk of his car at the Salvation Army distribution center in Jackson, Tenn. Meegan organized donations to victims of the tornadoes that devastated Jackson two weeks ago. He drove overnight to deliver the goods to relief agencies in West Tennessee. MADISON Taiwan donates $50,000 for tornado recovery effort Taiwan presented Gov. Phil Bredesen with $50,000 yesterday to help Tennessee communities recover from tornado damage earlier this month.

The check, given by Director General Maggie Tien of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, immediately was given to United Way of West Tennessee for use in Jackson, which sustained at least $20 million in damage when a twister tore through downtown. "On behalf of the government and people of the Republic of China, I hope these funds will help Tennessee's tornado victims rebuild their homes and their lives," Tien said. "As the old Chisaying goes, 'The whole world is one family, and all the people in the world are brothers and The thoughts and prayers of the people in Taiwan are with all those in Tennessee touched by this natural calamity." This is the second such donation from Taiwan to the state of Tennessee within six months. In December, Tien presented a check for $50,000 for tornado relief in the wake of November tornadoes. "This is an extraordinarily kind gesture on the part of Taiwan and one that will not soon be forgotten," Bredesen said.

"As attention turns to rebuilding, it's a reminder that we truly are 'all in this Tennessee and Taiwan became sister states in 1980.1 ASSOCIATED PRESS MONTGOMERY First lady to speak at Fort Campbell Associated Press members of the graduating class First lady Laura Bush will have a parent now deployed, with deliver the commencement most of them in Iraq or address at Fort Campbell High Afghanistan. Complete arrangements announced later by H. PRESTON SCALES License tag to promote Jackson's Hermitage By SUZANNE NORMAND BLACKWOOD Staff Writer President Andrew Jackson could soon be seen on specialized license plates across the state, according to The Hermitage, home of the nation's seventh president. A design has been approved and legislation has been sponsored at the General Assembly. All that's necessary, sponsors say, is for 1,000 orders to be placed for production and distribution. The red, white and blue license plate features a view of The Hermitage, the U.S.

flag in the background and a silhouette of an equestrian statue of Jackson in Lafayette Park in Washington. Nashville graphic artist Daniel Webber, who designed plates for Tennessee State Parks and Radnor Lake, designed the new plate. The announcement of the plate design came yesterday at a meeting of the Ladies Hermitage Association. "The plate really captures the spirit of The Hermitage, of Jackson and what it means to be an American," said Rachel Swann, public affairs officer for The Hermitage. Half of the proceeds will go toward continuing preservation efforts at The Hermitage.

The rest will go to the Tennessee Arts Commission and for highway beautification. The Hermitage is taking orders for the plate. Order forms are available by calling 889-2941 or by logging on to www.thehermitage.com./ RESTAURANT INSPECTIONS Here are scores from the Metro Health Department's restaurant inspections for the week of May 19: High scores: Sicily Pizza, 3610 Anderson Road, 96. DeBrock, surviving with wife Lois. She died at home and was resurrected in Christ on May 16, 2003 in Brentwood, TN. Nancy was, for nearly 48 years, the loving wife of Frederick Sears Harris, surviving. They raised three fine sons, Steve, Brock and David, who with their wives, Mary, Amy and Tracy, made Nancy the proud grandmother of nine grandchildren, Will, Emelie, McKenna, Saunder, Duncan, Baker, Kelly, Lucas and Reed. A graduate of Maumee, OH High School, 1948 and Miami University, 1952, followed by a brief career with Proctor Gamble.

She was an active Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority alumna. Nancy felt her greatest achievement in life was by far, being a mother. Home was the focus of her intelligence, capable talents and loving perseverance, she being the strong and steady center of her family's life. She enjoyed figure skating, playing tennis, books, spectator hockey and basketball, loved big band music, the "Pops" and stage shows, devotion to a lifetime of friends, her Scottish and Dutch family heritage, her summer cottage, and being an American. She was a life long Presbyterian, as member of First Churches in Maumee and Findlay, OH, Nashville, TN.

The depths of love felt for her by family and friends at her passing is testament to the rich and blessed life she knew she had lead. Her quiet faith shown bright and clear as her last days came. We are thankful for and inspired by her loving existence in this life. Funeral services 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 24, 2003, First Presbyterian Church Chapel, Nashville, TN.
