3 www.tennessean.com THE TENNESSEAN Wednesday, May 21, 2003 5C STOR IS: BASEBALL Offense gets 16 hits to support Wasdin in victory over Redbirds By MAURICE PATTON Staff Writer While discussing John Wasdin's April 7 perfect game at a luncheon yesterday, Nashville Sounds pitching coach Darold Knowles said; "Come on out tonight; you may see another one." Wasdin didn't quite live up to that billing, but he did shake off a leadoff walk to mow down 11 straight Memphis batters and work five shutout innings en route to a 9-2 win last night mm a five-run sixth to stay undefeated against the visiting Redbirds at Greer Stadium this seasoa "It's a great feeling," said second baseman David Doster, who went 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles among Nashville's seven extra-base hits. "We know we're a better team than our last 15 games 5-10. We've got to work through the bad times. It's a season-long thing. We all know that" Wasdin and the Sounds bullpen teamed for 13 strikeouts in the win, improving the team to 16-7 at home.

"I felt good out there," Wasdin said after winning for the first time in his last three starts. "I've been trying to be consistent I've been making some adjustments, trying to get back to where I was." Deceptive speed: With his second-inning stolen base, Sounds outfielder J.J. Davis is perfect in eight attempts this seasoa The 6-foot-5, 240-pounder was 7-for-ll last year at Class AA Altoona. The seventh-year pro has never posted double-digit steals. His career high is nine, at Class A Lynchburg in 2000.

"He'll have more than that this year," Jewett said. Davis added a mammoth home run over the neck of the guitar-shaped scoreboard in the fourth, giving him the team lead with six. Speaking of steals Tony Alvarez stole two bases last night but the second one will be talked about by. those that saw it for quite some time. Following a leadoff double in the fifth, Alvarez went for third base.

The throw from catcher Willie Morales beat Alvarez's head-first slide, which took him past the bag. I lowever, from a kneeling positioa he was able to slip a hand past third baseman Craig Paquette for the steaL Moments later, Adam Hyzdu looked to intentionally slide short of second in a stolen base attempt and tried unsuccessfully to step over the tag of Marty Malloy. "It had that same type of vibe," Nashville Manager Trent Jewett said after Wasdin gave up one run on three hits in six innings while striking out nine. "Everything was kinda in line like that." With Wasdin leading the way from the mound, the Sounds offense broke loose for 16 hits tying a season high set last Saturday at Albuquerque and put the exclamation point on the win with i i 1EN JF PCL standings Central Division Pel GB Col. Piazza saw Mets team physician Dr. Andrew Rokito on Monday who said the All-Star catcher had a Grade 3 strain the most serious kind where the muscle is partially torn off the bone.

Piazza will not need surgery. "Six weeks is certainly the low end of it," Mets General Manager Steve Phillips said. When asked if the injury could be season-ending, Phillips said, "It's possible." Piazza hurt himself Friday in San Francisco trying to avoid an inside pitch from Jason Schmidt Piazza was the Mets' leading hitter, batting 333 with a team-leading seven homers and 15 RBL Tve always been able to bounce back," he said. Gowdy to say Howdy: Curt Gowdy is going back to work in a baseball TV booth tonight Gowdy, 83. will be doing the Boston-New York game on ESPN, along with Chris Berman and Joe Morgan, as part of the network's Living Legends series featuring some of sports' great announcers.

It's an especially appropriate pairing for Gowdy, who worked two years for the Yankees and 15 seasons for the Red Sox. "He can do whatever he wants. If he wants to be a guest for nine innings and just have conversations, that's what we'll do," Berman said. Confreres rejoins Yankees: Jose Contreras rejoined the New York Yankees after working on his mechanics and confidence in four minor league appearances. Contreras, sent to the minors in April, spent time in the minor league complex in Tampa, Fk, before making appearances at Triple-A Columbus and Double-A Trenton.

Yankees reliever Steve Karsay had arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder and will miss the rest of the seasoa Karsay had a partial tear of his rotator cuff repaired by Dr. James Andrews in Binriingham, Ala. Karsay has been out all season because of the injury. Injury update: Boston's Pedro Martinez (4-2) was scratched from his start against the Yankees last night with pain in the right side of his back. Benches clean The benches cleared twice during the Minnesota-Oakland game last night once in the fifth after Rick Reed hit Ramon Hernandez in the left shoulder and again in the sixth when Tim Hudson plunked Bobby Kielty in the buttocks.

No punches were thrown either time and there were no ejections, but both teams were warned after the first clearing by plate umpire Doug Eddings.
