Leslie rallies Sparks to win Tennessean New Services The heavily favored Los Angeles Sparks got a jump on their bid for their first WNBA title, getting 24 points and eight rebounds from Lisa Leslie in a 75-66 victory over the host Charlotte Sting in Game 1 of the league finals last night. Leslie showed why she was the MVP of both the regular season and the All-Star game with a dominating second-half performance to rally the Sparks from an 11-point deficit The Sparks need to win one game on their home floor where they are 18-1 this season to close out the best-of-3 series and join their counterpart, the Los Angeles Lakers, as champions this season. Game 2 is tomorrow.

Game 3 would be Sunday. DeLisha Milton added 19 points and Tamecka Dixon scored 12 for the Sparks. The Sting, who started the season 1-10 before turning things around and winning the Eastern Conference title, got 18 points from Andrea Stinsoa A Stinson layup gave the Sting their largest lead of the night at 50-39 with 16:16 to play. Leslie and Dixon started an 18-8 run with aggressive drives to the hoop. After cutting the lead to 58-51, Leslie converted a pair of three-point plays that pulled the Sparks within one at 58-57 with 8:35 to play.

Dawn Staley answered with a 3-pointer for Charlotte, but LA's defense shut the Sting down over the next six minutes, forcing five turnovers. All-WNBA team: Lisa Leslie of Los Angeles, the league's career scoring leader with 2,670 points, tops the 2001 All-WNBA first team announced yesterday. Also selected was Kate Smith of the Minnesota Lynx, the single-season scoring record holder with a 23.1-point average. Leslie received 285 points, while Smith got 280 in voting by a 60-member paneL Completing the first team are Houston guard Janeth Arcain, Utah guard Natalie Williams, and Cleveland guard Merlakia Jones. Player poses for magazine: Playboy magazine actually got a WNBA player after all.

Nearly two weeks after Phoenix's Lisa Harrison turned down an offer to pose for the magazine, Washington Mystics rookie forward Tamara Stocks has appeared in a feature "Girls of the SEC," espn.com reported yesterday. Stocks played at Florida. Because Stocks posed for the photos after the Lady Gators were eliminated from the NCAA Women's Tournament but before she signed her WNBA contract, she did not violate NCAA rules or the league's behavior clause.
