Bobby Hamilton 1394. LIlixUlii 0 16,000551 886 Sounds Solo blast sparks win as team turning up power By MAURICE PATTON Staff Writer After finding the power switch during their last road trip, the Nashville Sounds left it on last night against Memphis at Greer Stadium. Adam Hyzdu's seventh-inning solo home run keyed the Sounds' offense in a 3-0 victory and was the ninth round-tripper in the past five games for a team that hit just 24 in its first 37 games. "We swung the bat well, but it was more important that we play sound fundamentally and pitch, which we did," Sounds Manager Trent Jewett said after his team collected four of its six hits in the three-run seventh and finished with its fifth shutout of the seasoa "If we get in banging contests every night, we're not a very good team, but Adam came up with a big one, and he allowed Tomas de la Rosa to give us some breathing room." One out after Hyzdu's leadoff longball the Sounds had three consecutive hits, with de la Rosa's two-run single finishing Memphis starter Steve Stemle. "When the game's tied late, you don't want to let a pitch go by," Hyzdu said.

"YouVe got a chance to go ahead late and you want to be up there ready to swing." Nashville hit three home runs in its four-game series at Memphis, then busted out the whuppin' stick at Albuquerque with eight in its four-game set there. "Albuquerque may be the best place to hit I've ever been," Hyzdu said. "Supposedly it's the highest city in baseball, and the wind was blowing out to either left field or right field every day. In batting practice yesterday, people were amazed at the difference in how the ball flew here and there." While Hyzdu and de la Rosa provided the necessary offense, Sounds starter Ryan Vogelsong and relievers Duaner Sanchez and Mark Corey combined for 11 strikeouts getting every Memphis starter at least once and held the visitors to five hits. Attendance surges nationally.

Minor League Baseball teams reported a total attendance of 5.7 million fans for April, the highest total in the organization's 102-year history and the Sounds were a positive part of the trend. Heading into last night's game, the Sounds had averaged 5298 per game at Greer Stadium, a jump of 1,832 over last year's mark of 3,466 for the same 20 dates. "I think new parks in Toledo International League, Albuquerque, Jacksonville Southern League and Frisco Texas League have played a part in the increase nationally," said Chris Snyder, Sounds assistant general manager for sales. "You look at Calgary moving to Albuquerque and being in the top 10; that's a big contributor right there. And baseball is just enjoying a resurgence in general "Here, I think the No.

1 factor has been that the team has been winning 15-7 at Greer. Second has been the weather. Last year, it was 32 degrees on opening night; this year, it was 78 degrees. Third, there's been an increase in group sales over last year." Industry-wide, the 5.7 million for April represented an increase of 4.6 (249,255) over last ApriL The PCL's attendance figures were up 9.8 over last ApriL Meet the Sounds The Nashville Sports Council will present the First Pitch Luncheon today at 1L30 am at the Renaissance Nashville HoteL Featured will be comments from Sounds Manager Trent Jewett, a question-and-answer session with selected Sounds players and a meet-and-greet session with the entire team. Tickets can be reserved by calling 743-3127.

Streaking: With his fourth-inning bunt single, Nashville outfielder Tike Redman extended his hitting streak to six games, his best of the seasoa He has hit safely in 11 of his past 13 games and remains atop the PCL with 18 stolen bases. Sounds vs. stars: Nashville faced the reigning Pacific Coast League Player of the Week, and will face the league's pitcher of the week tomorrow. Albuquerque outfielder Rob Stratum hit .444 from May 12-18, including a pair of 3-for-4 games against the Sounds. He wound up with two homers, two doubles and eight RBI for the week.

Memphis pitcher Nerio Rodriguez, who threw eight innings of three-hit ball in Friday's victory over Oklahoma, comes into row's start with a 239 earned run average and 44 strikeouts. x-clinched playoff berth 115.
