Bonds connected in the Giants' 131st game. The previous quickest to hit 56 homers was Sammy Sosa, who did it in the Cubs' 132nd game in 1999. "It was a fastball, probably the only one I got," Bonds said. "1 knew I had it." Braves 4, Dodgers Gary Sheffield hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning on the first pitch from Jose Cabrera, rallying Los Angeles over Atlanta Mike Remlinger (3-3) allowed a one-out single to Adrian Beltre and walked Jeff Reboulet, then retired Shawn Green on a flyout. Cabrera relieved and Sheffield connected averted a four-game sweep at Shea Stadium and moved a half-game ahead of idle Chicago in the wild card race.

"J.T. won the game for us," Bonds said. "Every game is important for us right now." Bonds also doubled, singled and walked. Needing a triple for the cycle he hit one Sunday night he grounded out in the ninth. After Rich Aurilia homered to lead off the fifth inning, Bonds followed with a high drive to right-center field for his 550th career x-clinched division Mondays results Colorado Springs at Sari Lake Edmonton at Fresno Iowa at Omaha Las Vegas at Tacoma Nashville 9, Memphis 2 New Orleans at Oklahoma Portland at Calgary Sacramento at Tucson Today's games Colorado Springs at Salt Lake Edmonton at Fresno towa at Omaha Las Vegas at Tacoma Nashville at Memphis New Orleans at Oklahoma Portland at Calgary Sacramento at Tucson Umpires-Home, Hollowell; First, Joyce; Sec (4), JWilson.

"We're going to have to stick together, all of us," Martinez said after being limited to 71 pitches over four innings against Texas. "I can only pitch every five days and right now I'm not at the top of my capability." When Martinez went on the DL June 27 with inflammation in his right shoulder, Boston led its division. After the Red Sox lost 5-4 Sunday to the Rangers in his first game back, they were four games behind the New York Yankees in the AL East and trailed Oakland by three games in the wildcard race.
