Wildcats Colts Cage Tilt Here Next Friday Night Basketball practice will re sumed next week, pissiblv on January 3, following a week of rest and relaxation for the local Wildcat basketball squad. Coach Joe Stribling gave his charges a well deserved rest.

The football season closed late and basketball started immediately without taking time out for a rest, the boys started intensive drill for their first game December 3. This rest has put them in a fine frame of mind for the coming winter campaign and tournament play. Their first foe will be the tough Western High quintet from Silver City here January 6. This game should give the locals a teat cf their strength for the coming tournament in Silver City during January. Bob Pierce, Westerns coach, has a small crew of boys but fast and well trained squad.

Treviaio and Chacon team up well for baskets and Lysle Vallunburg does some fancy leg work in the guard position. Deming fans will remember the stocky Valkingburg as the lad who could gain yardage in most any football game. Hia hard driving style of play won him honorable mention on the all-state team. His basketball play lacks the polish that his football play had but he is a good guard and will have to be reckoned with when the Colts come to Deming. The rivalry between these two teams has been keen for a number of years and their games are always worth the price of admission.

Deming will have a slight edge in. height w-hen Western comes here. Bill Element, Ben Fairall, and Clyde May all tower six feet or more above the floor and such height gives control of the back-board play to the Wildcats. Should the Western five be hot and hit their long shots from far out height will not play such an important part, however, if they try to rely on lay up shots the taller lads will have a definite advantage. Coach Stribling has not had to use long shots so far this season because he had developed such team work that the ball could be put in close for lay up shots.

Alex Abeyta, Bill Element, Benny Trujillo generally do the dirty work on these shots, with Dooley, Fair-all or Maynes handing toe ball off to the man in the clear for two points. Time will tell whether height will be enough to subdue the stubborn Colts or some other strategy must be used. The game will be played at Smith Gym on a newly polished floor. During the holidays Steve Lucero, building custodian and his helpers, scrubbed, washed, sealed and waxed the gym floor. It is in fine condition for fast basketball play now.

Lucero warns that the floor will not stand up if persons wearing street shoes are allowed to play on the floor. On January 7 the Cats will go to Hatch for a return game with the Bears. In their first meeting the locals whipped toe Bears without too much trouble. However, since that time Hatch has marked up victories over some creditable foes. It could be tough on the home court.

Coach Erwin Ewan will resume practice with the squad Kittens next week also in preparation for their clash with the Western squad on January 6. These Kittens have brought cheers from toe crowds with their hustling and team work during games played here. They are showing promise. Ben Benton, tall rangy center for the Kittens, is gaining confidence in his basket shooting and has promise of being one of the best post men developed here in some time. Attitude and work toward his play will tell.

The probable starters for the Kittens will be Benton nt center. Morales and Flores at guard, and Eresques and Ochoa at forwards. Game time will be 7 oclock for the squad clash and approximately 8:30 for the A game. Date, January at Smith Gym. Milton Hestand was business visitor in Las Croces Monday.
