Gary Sheffield, Chipper Jones and Andruw Jones hit consecutive home runs in the sixth inning off Carl Pavano, leading the Atlanta Braves over the Florida Marlins 3-0. "He pitched good but he made three mistakes and it cost him," said Andruw Jones, who homered for the second straight game. Pavano took a two-hit shutout into the sixth, then allowed Sheffield's second home run in two days, a 405-foot drive into the left-field stands. Chipper Jones followed with his first home run of the season, and Andruw Jones hit an opposite-field shot to left on an 0-2 pitch.

"It was nice to be a part our three outfielders doing it," Chipper Jones said. "It kind of supports the little fraternity we have out there, and what we're trying to achieve as a group." Last year, Pavano allowed 19 homers in 136 innings for Montreal and Florida They say solo home runs won't hurt you, but three in a row sure will," Pavano said. Atlanta won three of four games from the Marlins after getting swept by Montreal in its opening series. It was the first shutout of the season for the Braves, who tied Los Angeles for the NL high last season with 15. Russ Ortiz (1-1) won his first game for Atlanta, combining with three relievers on a five-hitter.

Ortiz, obtained during the offseason from San Francisco, allowed three hits, struck out three and walked three, throwing just 49 of 90 pitches for strikes. "To get the first win out of the way with a new team was nice, especially to get it now," Ortiz said. "I didn't want to go four or five starts before getting one." He was pitching on three days' rest for the first time in his major league career. "I felt fine," he said. Dale Scott; Thrt.Laz Dial. GIANTS 7, PADRES 4 time," Jewett said. "A lot of you guys will be in a baseball a long time. But you won't see anything more magical or difficult in your entire career." Even as calm and collected as Wasdin appeared after the game, there was no question in his mind that what he had done was something to remember. "It gives me a ball to put on my mantel that I have never had before," said Wasdin, who became the fourth pitcher in Sounds history to throw a no hitter.

"I just wish that my wife and kids had been here to see it." The last time a Sounds pitcher threw a no-hitter was on Aug. 7, 1988, when Jack Armstrong had one against Indianapolis. The only other time the Sounds have been a part of a perfect game was when Oklahoma City's Rick Helling threw one in Oklahoma against Nashville on Aug. 13, 1986. The biggest threat was a sharp hit by Matt Treanor down the third base line in the top of the ninth inning.

Third baseman Mike Gulan kept the perfect game intact, making a backhanded catch near the base for the first out. "I think the heart started racing after that play," Wasdin said, who exceeded his scheduled 75-pitch count in the top of the seventh inning. Following Treanor was Erickson, who jumped ahead 3-1 in the count before fouling off a ball to make the count 3-2. It was then that catcher Hum-berto Cota made a risky call he signaled for Wasdin to throw a curyebalL "Late in the game you really try to pull some tricks out of your hat," Cota said. "As a hitter you are not thinking a curyebalL Wasdin had everything on tonight.

Everything was for a strike so I really felt confident calling a curve richt there." Added Jewett, who spent four years in the Pittsburgh farm system as a catcher: "He was able to make the call and he did. I don't know as a former catcher if I can call that pitch." Wasdin struck out pinch-hitter Robert Stratton to end the game. Wasdin joined the Sounds after spending a year in Japan with the Yomiuri Giants, where he posted a 1-4 record with a 454 ERA in 10 appearances. The 2002 season was the first that Wasdin did not pitch in the majors since 1994. He was originally drafted by the Yankees in the 41st round in 1990 but chose not to siga Instead Wasdin attended Florida State where he posted a 16-4 record with 229 strikeouts in three years.

In 1993, Wasdin was selected by Oakland as the 25th overall pick in the June draft, where he embarked on his professional career. Since then he has a 31-29 major league record, with a 3.85 ERA With last night's win he now has a 37-21 record in the minors. "I hate to put anything negative on the game, but it is a shame that more fans didn't see it," Jewett said. "For any baseball fan you miss a game you may miss history and this was history." Last night, on the same night as flie Dodgers sue over Brown The Los Angeles Dodgers sued an insurance company for $4 million yesterday, saying the insurer did not fully honor a policy for injured starting pitcher Kevin Brown. Brown signed a seven-year, $105 million contract In December 1 998, but injuries limited him to a total of 29 starts and 1 3 wins the past two seasons.

He first injured his right elbow on July 16, 2001 and was out for the rest of that season. He returned in 2002 but was placed on the disabled list on May 27 with a sprained elbow. He was scheduled to return to the roster on June 1 1 but injured his back on May 29 when he lunged to keep his son from falling off a bed. He ended the year with a 3-4 record and 4.81 ERA, and underwent both surgery on the elbow and his back. The Hartford (Conn.) Financial Services Group maintains that the team's policy covered the 38-year-old right-hander's elbow injury and not his back problems.

Griffey on DL Ken Griffey Jr. was put on the 15-day disabled list by the Cincinnati Reds, two days after the center fielder dislocated his right shoulder while diving for a ball. He could return in 6-to-10 weeks. If surgery is needed, he could miss the rest of the season. No surgery for Jeter All-Star shortstop Derek Jeter's dislocated shoulder will sideline him for at least six weeks, but surgery will not be necessary unless there Is a recurrence of the injury.

-ASSOCIATED PRESS NL ROUNDUP men's NCAA championship game, attendance at Greer Stadium was L946. This is the third time in four games the Nashville pitching staff had 10 or more strikeouts to maintain its spot at the top of Pacific Coast League with a total of 47 strikeouts for the seasoa The second inning was more than a little shaky for Albuquerque which committed two errors in a row, resulting in two Sounds' runs. Gulan started off the inning with a grounder that was fielded by Isotopes shortstop Kevin Hooper. In an attempt to get Gulan at first, Hooper threw the ball into the stands behind first base, allowing Gulan to advance to third. Sounds second baseman Dave Doster hit a sacrifice fly to center field, sending Gulan home and giving the Sounds a 1-0 lead But the antics weren't over yet Nashville's J.J.

Davis hit a single to left center. As Cota came to the plate, Davis took a large lead. Isotope pitcher Nate Teut attempted to pick off Davis but threw the ball over the first baseman's head, and it rolled toward the stands in right field. Davis was credited with a stolen base, but the error was enough to send Davis around the remaining bases and give the Sounds a 2-0. "Seeing two runs like that was weird," Wasdin said.

"But then you could say, 'Have you ever seen Wasdin strike out 15 and throw a You see a lot of different tilings in baseball, and tonight was one of those you saw quite a few different things." The Sounds added two more in the bottom of the sixth. Left fielder John Barnes walked, and Adam Hyzdu, who was leading the Sounds heading into last night's contest with a .429 average, hit his first home run of the season to give Nashville a 4-Olead. And with the perfect touch from Wasdin, the Sounds remained undefeated at 4-0. "I can tell you this," Jewett said. "I don't know what he was wearing, but it will stink next time he pitches."
