As the Nashville Raceway heads toward tomorrow night's 34th season of stock car adventures, Reuther recalls some of the sport's bygone days. "I drove In the first race they ran at the Fairgrounds," said Reuther. "It's hard to believe it has been that long ago. And before then, we raced at Cumberland Speedway and the Legion Bowl.

Both those tracks are long gone." Reuther, who retired In 1963, won eight driving championships on the three tracks. "Back then everything was different," said Reuther. "We ran for the fun of it. Now It's all business. The money Is lncredblble what's being spent and what's being won." Although Reuther no longer races, he still has a vested interest in the sport He Is the private pilot of Winston Cup driver Bobby Hamilton.

"Watching Bobby drive is almost as exciting as me being out there myself," said Reuther. "His father and grandfather worked on my race cars, and I was at the hospital the day he was born. I've followed his career ever since he's been racing." Reuther will be on hand as a spe-cator for tomorrow night's season opening schedule, which starts at 7:30. "People ask me if I miss not racing cars," said Reuther. "And I tell them no, I really don't I enjoyed It when I was out there, but now that I'm retired, I'm content to stay that way." The 60-year-old driver, who was in town yesterday for an appearance on The Nashville Network, is planning a comeback In grand style. Later this month, at Commerce, Garlits will attempt to break the 301 miles per hour barrier. The event, at Atlanta Dragway, will run April 23-26. In 1957 Garlits became the first driver to break the 170 mph barrier, then in subsequent years posted record runs of 180, 200, 250, 260 and 270 mph.
