1 r1 ty JULY 1,1990. The SUNDAY Tennessean 2-C Sounds' 'Mr. VtWy9 set to fill gap again Hurry! Prices Good thru July 7 PRICE GUARANTEE UNIVERSAL TIRE WILL MEET ANY LOCAL COMPETITOR'S ADVERTISED PRICE ON ANY TIRE SHOWN IN THIS AD LARRY TAFT Sports Writer DENVER Shortly after Scott Scudder headed to Stapleton Airport on Friday for a flight that would take him to New York, Nashville Sounds pitching coach Ray Rippelmeyer looked for Kip Gross. He wanted to inform Gross that unless he received other instruction from Cincinnati, he wanted Gross to fill the vacancy in the Sounds starting rotation which developed because of Scudder's call-up to the Reds. "Just call me Mr.

Utility," Gross said, joking about his ever-changing role this season. Gross has been a starter for Nashville, a reliever for Cincinnati, a starter for Cincinnati, a reliever for Nashville and now a starter for Nashville again. For the Sounds, he has started six games and relieved in 12. He has compiled an 8-3 record with a 3.41 ERA. "I don't mind pitching in relief or spot starting," Gross said.

"I'm willing to do whatever I can to help this club. At the same time, I'm helping myself fill the role that Cincinnati wants from me because they apparently want me to be a utility pitcher." Scudder's second call-up of the season was the fifth of the year for Nashville. It doesn't exactly produce the kind of stability on a club that a manager would like, but the Sounds' Pete Mackanin says it is better this year than the past two seasons when he was with Iowa. "The number of roster changes you get with people going up to the big leagues is directly related to how healthy players are up there, how they perform up there and how well players on the Triple-A team are playing," Mackanin said. "Call-ups in Triple-A are different than on the other levels," Mackanin said.

"When the big leagues call up a Triple-A player, they want the best position player, the best pitcher the guys who are going to help them the most immediately," Mackanin said. "It's possible, though it hasn't been the case for us this year, that when a Triple-A team needs a player, they may not get the best player at that position from their Double-A affiliate. The reason is that if a prospect is at a certain level, the organization wants to leave him there to develop. They want him to get a full season, say, on the Double-A level to give him confidence and let him prove that he can hit on that level. You sometimes get a lesser player, just a body, to fill a roster spot "That's not the way the big-league teams do it They want your best because that's why you've developed that player." And that's why the call-up of Scudder has had the trickle-down effect on Gross and the Sounds.

"The reason doesn't matter to me," Gross said, "because I'm here to help and I'll do whatever helps." Confident. Aggressive. Undaunted. The RE71 isn't one to sit idle. The product of years of racing expertise, the RE71 is Bridgestones highest performing street tire ever.

With its racing-bred tread design resulting in road-hugging grip, and response that fails into the realm of a natural reflex. For the kind of performance you need under the most demanding conditions. Certainly, there is no question as to why you'll find Bridgestones on some of the fastest cars in the world. Obviously, when you think that there's just a fingers width of tire between you and the road, the RE71 is an excellent argument for making it a fingers width of Bridgestone. "I've been doing this kind of entertainment for 45 years and I still love it," said the 70-year-old Patkin. "I'll admit I was ready to quit, to retire five or six years ago. And I probably would have if it hadn't been for my part in Bull Durham three years ago.

That rejuvinated me and got me the kind of national recognition I thought I deserved." Patkin's briefs the home team on his routine before each game. "I'm not here to screw things up or get in anyone's way. I want the team to know when I'm coaching third, I'm going to try to entertain between each pitch, but when I'm telling a runner to hold up or to take another base, I'm dead serious." Patkin got into the entertainment business because of something which happened in World War II. "I'd hurt my arm pitching but I was still in service ball. Joe DiMaggio hit a home run off of me in a game in Honolulu.

As he ran around the bases, I trotted along after him," recalled Patkin, a Philadelphia native. "That got a good laugh from everyone and was really he beginning of my entertainment career." The renewal of interest in Patkin as a result of his movie role may prolong his career by several years. "It's amazing what the movie did for me. People stop me in airports and talk to me now now where I used to walk through unnoticed. I'd be a moron to tell you I don't like that Everyone likes recognition."
