Kling, retired businessman and humanitarian, died of a heart attack yesterday at Baptist Hospital East. He was 86. Kling was co-founder and retired president of the old Kling a wholesale distributing company. His many volunteer activities included the American Civil Liberties Union, Council on Peacemaking, Kentuckiana Interfaith Community, Urban League, Common Cause, the American Jewish Committee, Metro United Way and the Boy Scouts of America. He also was former chairman of the United Jewish Appeal.

Kling received numerous awards fop- his volunteer work, including the 1984 Peace and Justice Award, given annually by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Louisville; the 1978 B'nai B'rith national Humanitarian Award; the 1962 B'nai B'rith Man of the Year Award; and the Man of the Year Award of the National Conference of Christians and Jews. He was past president of Jewish Community Center and the old B'rith Shalom Congregation and a member of Hadassah, Downtown Lions Club and The Temple. Survivors include his wife, Betty Kling; two daughters, Suzanne K. Post and Carol Gibson; a son, Robert Kling; a sister, Mrs. Sam Evans; 11 grandchildren; and two greatgrandchildren.

The body was cremated. A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. tomorrow at The Temple, 5101 U.S. 42. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Council on Peacemaking or the Andrea Kling Research Fund at James Graham Brown Cancer Research Center.

Man sentenced to 7-year term for fatal car crash A Louisville man was sentenced to seven years in prison yesterday for a traffic accident that killed an Indianapolis woman and injured her Louisville companion. William R. Cobb IV, 29, of the 8000 block of Hummingbird Hollow, pleaded guilty Dec. 10 to second-degree manslaughter, second-degree assault, two counts of first-degree criminal mischief and driving under the influence of intoxicants.

Jefferson Circuit Judge Ellen Ewing imposed the sentence. Cobb was charged in an accident April 7 at Hancock and Chestnut streets in which Donna J. Webb-White was fatally injured. Webb-White, 39, died three days after the crash of internal injuries at Humana Hospital-University of Louisville, Deputy Coroner Jorge Quiroa said. Police said White was driving south on Hancock when her car was struck by Cobb's car, which was eastbound on Chestnut.

Cobb ran a red light and had a blood-alcohol reading of .17 percent well above the legal limit of .10 percent according to records filed by the commonwealth's attorney's office. Ella Gore, 35, of the 700 block of Ballard Court, a passenger in White's car, suffered multiple injuries. She was released from University April 11. Cobb spent one day in the hospital for treatment of a head injury. Man and wife hurt in gas explosion, fire A man who was cleaning his garage with gasoline was slightly injured when the gas fumes ignited, causing an explosion and fire.

The man's wife also was injured. Ernest Poynter, 49, was cleaning up spilled oil on the floor of his garage, a wood-frame building attached to his house at 1408 E. Breckinridge just before 2 p.m. Poynter uses the garage as a workshop, fire investigators said. He had poured gasoline on the floor, and its fumes were ignited, possibly by a wood stove in the same room, said Sgt.

Kenneth Howard, Louisville arson investigator. Poynter suffered minor burns on his hand. His wife, Alice, 44, suffered smoke inhalation. Both were treated at Humana Hospital-Audu-bon and released, spokeswoman Nancy Combs said. The fire spread from the workshop to the house, causing damage to the kitchen and several other rooms.

Alice Poynter had been inside with two friends when she heard the explosion and ran to the rear of the house toward the garage. The other two people were not na Crain and Mary Rose Gartner; a brother, John C. Mullen and three grandchildren. Funeral: 11 a.m. Thursday, St, Helen Catholic Church, 4005 Dixie Highway.

He was a retired employee of Carpenters Local 64 and a Navy veteran of World War II. She died Sunday when she lost control of her car and hit a tree on Trevilian Way. She was the former Berniece Stross, a native of Illinois and a member of Wayside Christian Auxiliary and Midlane Park Presbyterian Associated Reformed Church. Survivors: a son, Donald R. Hampton a daughter, Virginia B. Hampton; a sister, Florence Stewart of Hot Springs, three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
