"You'd like to think that a grown man with an imagination and a strong will could think of a more positive way to get publicity without putting someone in danger. "The thing about it is, I think the average fan is a tremendous person and good for their community." But when a spectator becomes a participant the situation isn't a positive one. Tve been coaching third base and had some fan run out of the stands from behind me," said Memphis Manager Tom Spencer, a former Sounds skipper. "If they'd had a knife, they could have stuck me before I knew what was going oa "Buying a ticket doesn't entitle a fan to being able to abuse somebody." SdeGned: Outfielder Tony Alvarez has not played since last Saturday at Iowa, as he has been hampered by a strained left hamstring. He has hit safely in five of his seven games after spending the bulk of the 2002 season at Class AA Altoona, where he hit 318 with 15 home runs and 59 RBL Mc check: This homestand marked the debut of Patrick McMurtry as Sounds public address announcer.

He replaces veteran Harvey McGee, who was let go at the end of the first homestand. "It was a combination of responses from some fans, asking their opinions, and some giving their opinions unsolicited," Promotions Director Brandon Vonder-harr. 'That's who we've got to listen to. It was ultimately my decision, but I don't think it's a decision one person can make. I went to a lot of sources." McGee returns after a five-year absence, having previously handled PA duties from 1987-97 before stepping down for health reasons.

"It was a very tough decision," Vonderharr said. "Harvey is a great guy, and he had done it before. Everybody has to like Harvey as a persoa" McMurtry has radioTV experience locally and in Knoxville, and has also done some PA work. Based on $125,000 loan amount. Rates change daily. 5.34 A PR. Mortgage broker fee. Baseball will review security at ballparks By MAURICE PATTON Staff Writer Nashville Sounds infielder Aaron Holbert knows when fans will stop coming out of the stands and attacking personnel on the baseball field as a man did to an umpire Tuesday night in Chicago during the Royals-White Sox game.

"All if going to take is for somebody to get stomped down to shut all that down," Holbert said. "It's sad to say, but that's what it's going to take. Somebody's going to get really hurt, and it's not going to be the players." Food for thought for any spectator, not just those at Greer Stadium. "I think we're living in a society now where anything can happen," said Nashville resident Rodney Irvin, a spectator who watched the Sounds defeat visiting Memphis 2-1 in 11 innings yesterday for the team's 11th win in 12 games. Following Tuesday nighfs incident at US.

Cellular Field, there was a heightened awareness among on-field and off-field personnel at Greer. "I think that's why we have six off-duty, non-uniformed state troopers here that consistently oversee the seating area," Sounds Assistant General Manager Jason Hise said. "We always have at least one on each side of the stadium that have access to the field in a short period of time if something was to occur. "I don't think we can ever predict what's going to happen, but I think in the seating area, we have parameters in place to control the things we need to controL In a facility, I think we feel comfortable that six to eight troopers can control our crowd." At the same time, Hise and the stadium's security force aren't in the business of crowd controL That type thing is always a concern, and it's even more of a concern when something happens elsewhere," he said. "But what we're trying to push here is family fun entertainment We don't want it to be a prison where people walk in here with guards everywhere.

At the same time, we want to be cautious and make sure our fans have a good time, that no one is getting out of hand or is a cause for concern." Hise said the Sounds have no plans to alter their promotional schedule, which includes $1 beers through the fifth inning on Thirsty Thursdays. Regardless of the security in place at any venue, it's virtually a given that if a fan is of a mind to get onto the playing field and make a nuisance of himself or herself, there's little that can really be done to prevent it (D)K7ZU(Q) Payments for Months' 3.9 APR upon apffr ovd erdH SOUNDS 2, REDBIRDS 1 Memphis ab Hart2b 1 TagucNcf 5 Nunnallyrf 5 Abbott 3b 6 Peeptoslf 4 Bowersss 5 Walrandp 0 bi 0 0 Nashvtt Redman cf Hotoertss Barnes If Glial 3b Rivera lb Davtsrt Doster2b Cotac Figueroap atbatph Campp Hollzp Mamp bl 1 0 Hodnguazc 4 Ryanp Layfiekj MoHnap Coffeph Joseph Nievssn delaHosapM Sanchez 0 Totals 39 Totals 38 1 1 Memphis Nashvie 100 000 0X00 -102 000 001 00001 200 E-Abbot; DP- Memphis Nashville 1 LOB- Memphis 9, Nashville 8. 2B- Bowers, Rodriguez, Gutan. "For it to happen twice in our city is unconscionable." In a Chicago police report, the fan was identified as Eric Dybas, 24, of Bolingbrook, I1L He was charged yesterday with aggravated battery and criminal trespassing. The White Sox announced several steps to increase security at its ballpark, beginning with last night's game against the Royals. Two people have been added to watch each foul line, ushers will check ticket stubs more frequently, and more public-address announcements will be made to remind fans of the penalties for going onto the field. Royals GM Allard Baird initially said he wasn't sure he wanted the Royals to play last night unless his team's safety was assured. He got that assurance during a meeting with Williams and Hallinan.

"What I said last night is what I meant," Baird said. "It was a concern. If something wasn't done, we wouldn't have played. But I felt comfortable after meeting." Top baseball officials were in Chicago yesterday to investigate the assault on first base umpire Laz Diaz, which raised concern and questions throughout the majors.

It came just three months before US. Cellular Field hosts the All-Star game and about seven months after a similar attack on a first base coach at the stadium. Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig said he was extremely troubled by the assault Tuesday night during the game between the White Sox and Kansas City Royals. There is no place in baseball for such deplorable fan behavior and we urge that the guilty parties be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," Selig said. Kevin Hallinan, major league baseball's security chief, and Sandy Alderson, executive vice president of baseball operations, were looking into the attack.

Selig said baseball would re-examine security at all stadiums. Last September, Kansas City coach Tom Gamboa was pum-meled by a father and son just yards from where the fan ran onto the field and tried to tackle Diaz by grabbing him around the waist Security and players rushed to help the 40-year-old Diaz, who served in the US. Marine Corps Reserve. "I just turned around and got him off me," he said. The good hand-to-hand combat they taught me worked." Diaz was not hurt, but the fan, who's name was not released, needed treatment for minor injuries at a hospital after being thrown to the ground and roughed up by players.

He was later seen with a bloody bandage on his head. 0 SiiMI Oik "7 Tt GREAT DEALS BEFORE THEY'RE Kj Jl FREE Trailer or FREE extended on all 2002 Aquatrax In Stock! wwwJtondSjCOotoprtnQe. cowl 866-376-9300 615-378-9300 honda.com a responsible rider for your safety read your owners manual thoroughly and ALWAYS WF AH A 8 COAST GUARD APPROVED PF Nf.OPRENF WETSUfT BOTTOM.
