Luis Tejeda added three field goals for the Tigers (2-2), the final coming from 30 yards out with 2:58 remaining to give Memphis a 16-9 lead. It would mean the difference in the game as Arkansas (1-3) failed on a 2-point conversion with 1:38 remaining after scoring on a 14-yard pass play from quarterback Barry Lunney to James Perry. Memphis was called for roughing the passer on the touchdown play, leaving Arkansas only a yard and a half for what would have been the go-ahead conversion. But Lunney's floating timing pass to Shannon Sidney in line," Tech linebacker Jamal Cox said.

"They were pushing us and he had two yards before he even got to the line of scrimmage." A hard-nosed effort from the Georgia Tech defense, especially linebackers Rodney Wilkerson and Cox, limited the damage to a 10-0 first-half deficit "The defense couldnt be on the field that many times in that many tough situations," Cox said. "We dont have the depth for that" Tech quarterback Luginbill had a rough outing, completing 16 of 27 for 205 yards and one touchdown. He also threw two interceptions. Luginbull often misread coverages and completed safe, short passes in situations where the Yellow Jackets were faced with third-and-long. Several times, Luginbill missed a wide receiver running to the post behind the secondary.

"We scored on it once," said wide receiver Charlie Simmons, who caught a 42-yard pass from Luginbill for a third-quarter touchdown. "But it was open a lot We'd go back to the huddle and say 'it's open', but the quarterback has a lot of things couldnt hold on to the ball. They turned the ball over four times with their first five possessions. "I have no explanation," Georgia Tech Coach Bill Lewis said. "Dont ask me why, I have no explanation." In addition to spending so much time on the field, Georgia Tech's defense had to contend with Baldwin, Duke's 230-pound running back.

Tech had four turnovers in the first quarter, but Duke managed to score only on Baldwin's 1-yard run after 8:22. That score was set up when Zuanich recovered Derrick Steagall's fumble on the Yellow Jackets 42. Baldwin, who has 582 yards in four games and 10 TDs, ran the ball seven times for 26 yards in the drive. The Blue Devils ran two plays all day the zone dive (a straight ahead run) and a counter, or misdirection play off the dive. "They just ran it down our throats," said Zach Pillar, Georgia Tech's freshman defensive tackle.

"They had a big, strong offensive ATLANTA (AP) Robert Baldwin rushed for 162 yards and three touchdowns yesterday as undefeated Duke, off to its best start since 1988, took advantage of six turnovers to beat Georgia Tech 27-12. Baldwin, the Atlantic Coast Conference's leading rusher, scored on runs of 1, 2 and 6 yards and Duke (40, 2-0 ACC) added Tom Cochran's field goals of 28 and 21 yards. Tech (1-2, 0-1 ACC) scored on a 42-yard TD pass from Tommy Lu-ginbill to Charlie Simmons to cut Duke's margin to 17-6 with 3:07 left in the third period. Tech, however, bobbled the snap on the extra point and Duke, which opened the 1988 campaign by going 5-0, added 10 fourth-quarter points on Baldwin's 6-yard TD run and Cochran's 21-yard field goal. Both scores were set up by interceptions.

The first was by Billy Granville, who also recovered a first-quarter fumble, and the other by John Zuanich. The Yellow Jackets couldnt handle Duke's blitzes; they couldnt sustain much offense; and they Manley reading between the lines ruinT) LTD 10 Storewide means extra savings on Tires, Batteries Shocks Thru 928 the right corner of the end zone was disallowed when Sidney was called fofpass interference. For three quarters, the two teams exchanged field goals leaving the score tied at 6-6. Early in the fourth quarter, Memphis stopped Arkansas deep in its own territory, and a short punt gave Memphis the ball at the Hogs' 29. Holliday then took over, carrying on all three plays in the drive, including the final 7 yards for a 13-6 lead.

Lance Ellison cut the lead to 13-9 with a 36-yard field goal to cap an 11-play, 45-yard drive, but Tejeda answered with his 30-yarder at the 2:58 mark to give Memphis a 16-9 lead. On Arkansas' next drive, Lunney went to work, crafting a 4-play, 67-yard drive that took just over a minute. NEXT FOR VANDY Vs. Arkansas, Little Rock TV: Saturday, 3 p.m., Ch. 4.

they never pay attention to the media. "I read the newspaper but I don't let it affect me. I just like to know what people think," he said. Manley finds no discouragement in stories that predict continued doom and gloom for Vandy. And he reads it in local newspapers and in those from his hometown in Birmingham, Ala.

"I think after the Alabama game we got a little bit better feel from the newspapers from what I read," Manley said. "But we still have to win they're going to be down on us unless we win." Vanderbilt coaches don't mind criticism from the media as long it's accurate. "I would prefer the players talk to the media and I like for them to read what's written about them," said Chris Symington, who coaches Vandy's defensive tackles. "The public tends to paint a prettier picture than what's really there they don't want to hurt the player's feelings." Manley, who isn't worried about criticism, personally finds it motivational when VU head coach Gerry DiNardo reads to the team. DiNardo keeps scissors on his desk and flips stories out of the paper to use as motivational tools.

The week before the Ole Miss game, outspoken Rebel flanker Roell Preston was quoted in The Tennessean saying "We can beat Vandy. By watching Vanderbilt against Alabama, if they play like that, I don't think they're capable of playing with our offense." Manley likes to listen to DiNar-do's readings. "It really helps me because it makes me want to prove people wrong," Manley said. The crowds at Vandy's games are also a concern for Manley. Last year attendance nosedived after the Comrriodores lost five of six games during a midseason stretch.

"My parents sit in the parent's section so thev can't really tell me what the fans are saying about us this year, Manley said, "nut tney say the students are cheering a lot more and the stadium is a lot louder." In either case, thafs progress for the well-read defender. But, the 6-foot-4, 290-pound Van-derbilt defensive tackle is also man enough to take criticism and he has heard a lot of it in the last three years. During those years Manley has seen and heard it all absorbing newspaper columns, television commentaries and slams from disgruntled fans. But he senses a change, even if it's subtle. Vandy has a typical 1-2 start, but has played well enough in Southeastern Conference losses to Alabama and Ole Miss to fuel higher expecations than usual. "Even though we lost those two games I think we've gained a lot of confidence," Manley said.

"We know we had a chance to win those games we had a big chance to win those two games." That confidence, he believes, has washed over into the Vanderbilt Stadium crowd and into the community. "I think people in Nashville are now expecting us to win. We have a winning attitude and people are seeing that," said Manley. In good times and bad, sports reporters and fans are always quick with suggestions on how to succeed in college football Armchair quarterbacks are legion, vocal. Even on the campus.

"I talk to the students on campus a lot and they are very honest about our team," Manley said. "They'll tell us if we stink." The Commodore football team has heard that before. This year is just a little different, even on the heels of consecutive losses going into Saturday's game at Arkansas (3 p.m., Channel 4). "People are respecting us more," Manley said, "even though we haven't really shown them anything in the win-loss column. But, we're going to." Public opinion about him and his teammates, as reflected in the media, never slips up on the well-read athlete.

Manley absorbs news about his team. Anyone who isn't hesitant to butt heads with SEC linemen isn't likely to be affected by newspaper or TV reports.
