(AP) Jeff Johnson caught three touchdown passes in leading East Tennessee State (3-0, 1-0) past Southern Conference foe VMI (0-2, 1-1). Johnson scored for East Tennessee State off a 5-yard pass from Greg Ryan with 3:51 remaining in the first quarter, and a 75-yard bomb from Chris Beatty. He scored on another pass from Ryan, a 9-yarder, with 6:23 left in the game.

It was a big win for Southern Mississippi. Tommy Waters threw two touchdown passes, and the defense stopped two second-half Memphis rjriyes inside the 10, as the Golden Eagles beat the Tigers 20-3 last night to equal their win total of a year ago. lMWe needed this win.

The players talked about having to win this game all week," Southern Miss coach Jeff Bower said. "It will help our confidence." Southern Miss (2-1), which had its worst record in 68 years at 2-8-1 last season, was coming off a 24-14 home loss to No. 18 Virginia Tech. In that game, the Golden Eagles failed to capitalize on four turnovers inside Hokie territory and had just 154 yards. Waters, a much-maligned, fifth-year senior, completed 19-of-33 passes for 188 yards against Memphis, including a 12-yard TD to Ryan Pearson and a 13-yard score to Fred Brock.

"We went out and worked hard this week, going back to the basics," Waters said. Southern Miss and Memphis (1-2) are among five independent teams that make up the new Liberty Bowl Alliance, which will determine the host team for the Dec. 31 bowl game at Memphis. Only Southern Miss has two wins. The Golden Eagles led 14-3 when Waters found Brock open in the left corner of the end zone with 2:45 left in the third quarter.

It was Waters' fourth straight completion on the 10-play, 80-yard drive after Memphis missed a field goal. LT. Gulley returned an intercep tion 23 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter to finish the scoring. Five of eight second-half possessions for Memphis ended in Southern Miss territory, but produced no points. Two ended at the 7, one on a missed 24-yard field goal by Luis Tejeda and the other on an incomplete pass on fourth-and-goal by Tony Scarpino after the Tigers had moved 73 yards in the third quarter.

"Our problem was the fact that we couldn't score inside the 20-yard line. We had a chances, but had a few bad passes and some dropped balls," Memphis coach Chuck Sto-bart said. "We have to do a better job of realizing what we can and can no do in the red zone." Scarpino completed just 15-of-37 passes for 149 yards, with three interceptions. "It seemed like we were hesitant in the first half. When we opened it up we did a better job, but the little stupid mistakes are killing us," said Scarpino, a senior, who made just his fifth career start, second against Southern Miss.

Waters hit Pearson in the right side of the end zone six minutes into the game to give Southern Miss, which outgained Memphis only 259 yards to 232, the lead for good. Both teams had trouble running the ball, Southern Miss with 61 net yards rushing and Memphis with 83 Tejeda kicked a 29-yard Held goal with 3:06 left in the first half for Memphis, which had just 41 yards before halftime. It was the first field goal of the season for the Tigers. "-T' -tvi cy I CJ As Low I P15580R13 rJ5 In.
