Suesberry, who now practices medicine in Delano, played cornerback and safety but made his mark at quarterback. "I played defense only because there was a limited substitution rule," Suesberry said. "I think football's a much better game now.

Not only are the players bigger and faster now, but the offenses and defenses are much more complicated. There's a lot more specialization. I like the wide-open game." The biggest change, though, has been the complete integration of sports. "In my era, the SEC didn't recruit black players. There are plenty of black players in the SEC now," Suesberry said.

"I think it was great for Tennessee State to get In that conference they're in now." By TOM WOOD Sports Writer The game of football has changed considerably from when Frank McRae, Wilbur Suesberry, Howard Green and Luster (Brute) Hayes were Involved with Tennessee State's program. The football foursome were inducted into the TSU Hall of Fame last night at the Loews Vanderbilt Plaza Hotel, along with basketball standout James Satterwhite and women's track runner Barbara Frazier. Hayes played football for the Tigers from 1938-41 while Suesberry quarterbacked the Tigers from 1955-58 and McRae played from 1962-65. Green was an assistant coach from 1956-60 and again from 63-68. They recall a time when football was much simpler, with players who weren't as big or fast as they are today having to go both ways and when equipment was not as well-built as it is today.

"I came along when we were still wearing leather headgear and we didn't have all that padding," said Hayes, who was a center and defensive tackle and is now retired. "But we didn't get hurt near as much as it seems today's players do." McRae is a former defensive tackle who now acts and has appeared in such movies as Norma Roe, Cannery Row, Lethal Weapon and others. He says the game has changed in outward appearances only. "The equipment's better, it's more organized and the training techniques are better, but it's still basically the same game," McRae said. "You've still gotta get 10 yards for a first down and you still run the Christopher BerKey New TSU Sports Hall of Fame members include, from left, James Satterwhite, Frank McRae, Barbara Frazier, Luster (Brute) Hayes and Dr.
