TudtvMAY 12. im THI TCNNHStAN $. New news director joins WTVF-Ch. 5 next month Roseanne's life a real TV sitcom 'a Ik (fit I Robert Stoldal coming from Las Vegas station By SANDY SMITH Staff Writer WTVF-Channel 5 soon will be getting a new news director. Robert Stoldal takes over next month, executive vice president Lem Lewis announced yesterday.

Stoldal should be at the station within a month, Lewis said. Stoldal currently is news director of WTVFs sister station, KLAS, in Las Vegas, a position he's held since 1976. He first joined that station as reporteranchor in 1968. Lewis said there are no plans to make changes in the station's news operation. "Bob has had numerous offers ever the years from a number of television stations, but he has family who live In Las Vegas," Lewis said.

"It's very hard to get him to consider any opportunities outside of Las Vegas, but we're very thankful that he never left KLAS. "This Is an attractive market The news presence Is excellent, and we think we can continue to build the news franchise." During his tenure at KLAS, the station's news department has won more than 100 awards for journalistic excellence, including a 1986 award from United Press International as Best Newscast in America. In 1987, Stoldal received an Iris Award for a two-hour special, Mob on the Run, which investigated the rise of organized crime in Las Vegas. The station regularly wins the ratings race in newscasts, but runs second In prime-time programming. "I look forward to the challenges and opportunities In Nashville," Stoldal said in a statement "WTVF has a long history of providing outstanding news coverage to Middle Tennessee, and with the excellent news staff already In place, I am very excited about the station's future." KLAS is owned by Landmark Communications, which purchased WTVF last year.

WTVF news director Mike Cavendar resigned in April to take a similar position in Tampa, Fla. By MIKE HUGHES Gannett News Service A surprising thing has happened to Roseanne, you know. From the beginning, it's been one of TVs funnier comedies. Lately, it's sometimes been one of the best dramas. "That's happened naturally," Insists Tom Arnold.

"Most of that has come from things at home." Tom knows both sides of this. He's script editor; he's also married to Roseanne Arnold and is stepfather to her daughters. Roseanne closes its season (8 p.m. today on WKRN-Channel 2) with laughs, he promises. "It's Just one of those very funny shows when everything gets thrown together." Last week, however, came a moving episode.

The daughters befriended their mom but only to pitch for a favor. "That really happened to Rosie, two years In a row," Tom says. "It really hurt her." Then like much of her life it became great television. The episode was boosted by the rich drama talent of John Goodman. Most remarkable this season, however, has been the transformation of Sara Gilbert, as Darlene.

Once a fierce athlete, Darlene quit the basketball team, disappeared into a funk then semi-emerged as a science-fiction fan. "We took that from our daughter," Tom says. "One girl would not come out of her room; she wore black all the time. "Some of the writers asked when this would end, when she would 'get I didn't want that; it doesn't work that way." It doesn't; kids just evolve. So do Roseanne, Roseanne promises to close its season with laughs at 8 p.m.

today on WKRN-Channel 2. the former Denver housewife, and Tom, the former Iowa troublemaker. After kicking his alcoholism and drug addiction, Tom has trimmed from 320 pounds to 230. He's also expanded his workload. ABC has already ordered The Jackie Thomas Show for next season, with Tom starring.

It's even booked a special called The Rosey and Buddy Show, at 7:30 p.m. this Friday. The latter Is a prime time cartoon satirizing the blandness of other ABC cartoons. When you're hot, you can get away with some intriguing things. SIDE NOTE: Roseanne Arnold returns later, when Barbara Walters reruns past highlights at 9 p.m.

today on WKRN-Channel 2. Most Interesting, however, Is the contrast between Tonight stars. It took Walters years to coax an interview from her friend, Johnny Carson; Jay Leno was sitting outside his home, eagerly waiting for her TV truck. 1 I I I I Buy 2 Yds. of Fabric, Today's highlights GET 1 YD.
