11, 1992 THE TENNESSEAN Ex-Board of Regents chancellor steps in to aid ETSU transition JOHNSON CITY (AP) Roy Nicks has few specific goals for his yearlong tenure as interim president at East Tennessee State University. "The only thing they asked me to do up here is to try to bring unity to the various constituencies and move the campus forward," Nicks said in an interview last week. "My only mission here is that." Gov. Ned McWherter and Otis Floyd, chancellor of the state Board of Regents, asked Nicks to take over at the campus of about 12,000 students that has been divided by the search for a permanent president. Nicks, 58, was Board of Regents chancellor from 1975 until he retired in 1986.

Since then, he has been a private educational consultant. He admits he was a little surprised by the offer to come out of retirement, but he thinks he can bring the university back together by meeting with those on campus and in the community. The presidential search seems to be on hold as the campus waits for a decision from the Regents on whether to go ahead with the surviving candidates or start the process over. Local favorite Jack Campbell, president of Walters State Community College in Morristown, didn't survive the first cut of candidates last fall. Campbell is a Johnson City native and ETSU alumnus.
