TijiiiTiiTrij iiiiiiniiwjwii'Tfr" THE TENNESSEAN turUy, April 2 1994 SB Death Notices Jury debating McMinnville slaying T5 aliamunt, Tenn. (AP) a jury is to resume deliberations today in the case of an interstate rest stop worker accused of kidnapping, raping and murdering a convenience store worker. -The jury deliberated for four hours yesterday before the judge sent them home for the evening. -John Allan Chapman, 26, testified Thursday that he remembers nothing about the night of April 19, 1990, when Michelle Blake, 26, disappeared from the Pit Stop South store at McMinnville. Blake's body was found the next day in neighboring Grundy County at a graveyard.

She had been stabbed, strangled and raped. Chapman couldnt explain accounts by witnesses who testified that they saw someone fitting Chapman's description and a truck similar to one he owned at the store minutes before Blake disappeared. The case went to the jury yesterday afternoon after two weeks. Should Chapman be found guilty, another hearing will be held to determine his punishment The state is seeking the death penalty, but jurors could recommend life in prison or life without parole. Chapman faces trial in the murder of Vicki Sue Metzger, 40, a former Indiana nun who disappeared in July 1992 while on her way to Atlanta.

Chapman said he was working at a Warren County nursery around the time Blake died. The convenience store was in Warren County, but Chapman said he rarely passed through McMinnville. He said he traveled Interstate 24 from his Grundy County home to work. But when District Attorney Mike Taylor showed Chapman a paycheck he cashed at the store, he said he may have stopped there but couldnt remember. He also said he didnt recognize Blake when Taylor showed him a photo of her.

ALEXANDER FUNERAL HOME, 452-2324 Her body was found behind an 1-24 rest stop at Monteagle, about 60 miles northwest of Chattanooga, where Chapman then worked. She had been raped and strangled. Authorities analyzed fluids found on Blake and Metzger and compared them with Chapman's blood; the DNA content matched. DNA is molecular material governing hereditary traits such as hair color, eye color or blood type.

Authorities arrested Chapman in November 1992 after someone pulled a knife on a Nashville woman at the Monteagle rest stop. The woman escaped and reported Chapman. He has pleaded innocent Parolee charged in dealer's death By LINDA A. MOORE Staff Writer Police arrested a 30-year-old parolee yesterday in the killing earlier this month of Larry L. Carney, 29, a convicted flim-flam artist and drug dealer.

Robert D. Johnson, 340 S. Fourth was charged at about noon yesterday with criminal homicide after coming to the police station to be interrogated, said murder squad detective Pat Postiglione. "We think the motive for the homicide was robbery, and drugs may have played a part, as well Johnson denied the crime but has admitted that he was with the victim on the night of the killing, the detective said. The suspect was paroled less than a year ago after serving about 11 years in prison for a 1982 murder, he said.

Carney's body, shot once in the head, was found at about 7 a.m. March 20 in a car in Douglas Park in East Nashville near Meigs Magnet School. The medical examiner placed the time of his death at about midnight. BGA to grow into 2 campuses FRANKLIN Battle Ground Academy yesterday announced plans to expand into two campuses, splitting grades into a middle and a high school and allowing room for more students. Dr.

Ronnie Griffeth, headmaster of the 6-12 grade school, said last night that it has purchased 55 acres of land near Franklin Road and Mack Hatcher Memorial Parkway where a high school for grades 9-12 will be built "This will allow us to expand our enrollment to 600," said Griffeth, noting that 468 students now attend BGA. Students in grades 6-8 will attend class on the existing campus when the estimated $5 million high school is complete. Griffeth said the new school should be ready for the 1996-97 school year. Survivors: daughter, Tracy Denise Thompson, Nashville; brother, Clifton N. Beard, MEMPHIS (AP) A federal court jury yesterday convicted topless bar owner Danny Owens of conspiring to profit from prostitution and gambling at his sex-oriented businesses. Owens, 43, a longtime leader in the city's topless nightclub industry, had been on trial since Jan. 26. Four Owens associates, including his 23-year-old son, also were convicted of taking part in the conspiracy.

One co-defendant was acquitted. Various local and federal authorities have sought to put Owens behind bars for nearly 20 years. He has had numerous run-ins with the law but has avoided convictions leading to long prison terms. The VS. District Court jury convicted Owens on 15 criminal charges carrying maximum prison sentences of five to 20 years each.

He also faces fines up to $500,000 on each charge. Thirteen of the charges were for money laundering, attempting to hide the proceeds of illegal activity. Prosecutors called a string of witnesses who told of buying or selling sex at Owens' clubs or the "movie and model" businesses. Government investigators said they witnessed sex acts in plain view of other bar patrons. Owens' son, Blake, who is jailed awaiting sentence on an unrelated kidnapping conviction, also was convicted of conspiracy and gambling.

Co-defendants Lynetta Gail Carter and Kaye Miller were convicted on similar charges, as was Ira John Woodfin, who also was convicted of money laundering. Co-defendant Rose Ann Cooper was acquitted. Defense lawyer Bob Gilder said he will appeal and argue the trial should have been moved to another city because Owens' notoriety in Memphis could have swayed the jury. "I was disappointed but not surprised," by the conviction, Gilder said. But prosecutor Fred Godwin said the jury's decision to acquit Owens on five other charges against him shows he was given a fair review.

"It was a careful verdict," Godwin said. Owens has been jailed since his indictment in September 1992 and will remain there to await sentencing.
