SPECIAL DIAMOND VALUES lHv sv; 1 H(0 Union City child's 1987 disappearance still baffles police 4 5 fore news of her confession got but, mainly to escape media attention. Asked about Mariena's disappearance, she says she remembers that the day was fairly normal.

She had just scolded her daughter. "I got onto her about coming in and out," Bailey said She makes a point of saying she never hit her daughter. But she said otherwise in a recorded interview with former Dyer County, juvenile officer Stan Cav-ness. On tape, she said she knocked out the girl, then panicked when she couldn't rouse her and threw her off the Lower Campground Bridge north of Martin. These days, Bailey sticks to what she originally told police: Marlena was outside playing the last time she saw her.

About the taped confession, she said: "I was with him for at least two hours, but only about three minutes of the tape was played in court "I was very upset and I wasn't coherent at all. I always wondered what happened to the rest of the tape because it would prove that I spent most of the time denying everything he was saying to me," she said. Said Cavness, now a captain with the Dyersburg, Police Department "She was very coherent and she understood what she was saying." "It's hard to rule out a confession from a mother who says she killed her daughter," said Union City Police Lt Joe Garner, who keeps a photo of Marlena on a bulletin board. "We're keeping everything open." LaWade Strickland, Pam Bailey's father, said some people have suggested Marlena was sold to a black market child-adoption ring. Trying to console him, some say the girl probably is safe and happy somewhere, living in a nice home with adoptive parents.

"Tiiat's bull," Strickland said. "The only really nice home she could have is with her real family here where she belongs. I love my other grandchildren. But there's one missing, and I'm not quitting until I find her." development on Old Harding Road next to Harpeth Valley Elementary School; Larkin Property on Old Harding road near the railroad tracks (change from agricultural-residential to commercial); Prodigy Day Care Center on Hicks Road across from Deer Lake Homes; residential planned unit development on Griffin property on Poplar Creek Road across from Rolling River Parkway; Loveless Restaurant property off U.S. Highway 100 (change from agricultural-residential to commercial).

And that just fuels the whispers about why a mother has managed to be so calm throughout such a terrible ordeal. Says Bailey: 'Tve told the storyjso many times it's become a routine." To a stranger, though, the case of the missing child is far from routine. On April 16, 1987, Bailey told police that 4-year-old Marlena disappeared from the front yard of their home in Union City, Term. A massive search by volunteers throughout Tennessee and Kentucky was futile. Two months later, Bailey admitted on tape to killing the girl and throwing her body into the Obion River.

Then Bailey recanted, claiming a family friend stole the child after Bailey refused his sexual advances. An Investigation cleared the man. Three years later, in union ury, the mystery continues. Neither the girl nor her body has been louna. Ana police are stumped.

In June, NBCs Unsolved Mysteries TV show plans to film a segment about Marlena Childress, with a September air date. "I remember the little girl's mother riding through the neighborhood us ing a bull horn calling, 'Marlena, It was just so sad," said Lottie Perkins, who lived down the street from the Baileys. Some people doubted Bailey's story from the beginning, among them Kevin Childress, Mariena's father. no better off than the average person out there wondering what happened," says Childress, who has remarried and lives in Martin, Tena "There's only one person who real ly knows, and it seems like she's giv ing everybody the runaround," he said. "I just dont know whether to be lieve Pam or not." Pam Bailey, now 25, also has re married and has two boys: Damon, 3, and Casey, 8 months.
