NFL search falls to new group Five-member committee tries to end stalemate on commissioner Poindexter beats bloody MacDonald 1 TOM WOOD Spirit Wnttr Young Nashville boxer Kevin Poindexter backed bold talk with ooider action last night scoring a stunning first-round technical knockout of Jim MacDonald in the "Best of the Rockys" boxing card. Just two days earlier, the 23-year-old Poindexter said he expected "to take out" MacDonald, a 31-year-old world-class cru-berwdght who has fought for two world titles. And that's what happened. Poindexter unleashed a series of powerful right books late in the first round to open two bloody cuts around MacDonald's left eye. As blood flowed down MacDonald's face, referee Steve Murff stepped in and asked ringside physician Dr.

Ross Fleming to determine if MacDonald should continue. Fleming studied MacDonald's face briefly before refusing to OK MacDonald for further action and the stoppage was awarded to Poindexter at the 230 mark. Although tt was the gash under the eye which caused most of the blood. It was a cut on the upper left comer which concerned the doctor. "I thought the trauma over the left eye was sufficient that he could not go any further," said Fleming.

"If he had taken one more punch there, he might have problems with his vision." Poindexter jumped for joy as MacDonald stared bloodily In dls-belief and the nearcapacity crowd at the Vanderbilt Plaza Hotel ballroom simply looked on stunned. kitchen sink," won the judges cards by lopsided scores of 80-63, 80-70 and 8m "Don! tell me I can't box," said Ross, who was pin-point accurate with his punches and in complete control "Be was strong, be was a good fighter. Ifs what I needed." Surratt who said MacDonald was the hardest hitter he had ever faced, hoped for a rematch and Ross was agreeable. "I hope they bring him back," Ross said. "The next time he's going to fall." The other main event bout saw Nashville light heavyweight Frankie Swindell score a knockout at 130 of the first round over Paris Johnson of Columbus, Ohio.

Swindell, ranked No. 2 In the world by the International Boxing Federation, used the brief workout as a tuneup for hb Jaa.7 title bout with current IBF champion Prince Charles Williams. "It was a good physical workout" Swindell said after dropping Johnson with a short left book. "But I need them to go four or five rounds more because I cant learn nothing from a first-round KO. Right now, you're looking at the new IBF champ, tt Just isn't official yet" Of the other five bouts on the (3rd, three ended in the first round and the two more didnt get past the second.

The deadliest was heavyweight Nate Tubbs of Cincinnati, who used a devastating right uppercut to KO Tony Morrison of Covington, Ky, Just 45 seconds Into the fight sj the four In Dallas, It came out 13-13 with two abstentions, one of them from Rooney. Now comes the new committee, whose recommendation must be unanimous. Then the owners would vote with 19 still needed to elect a successor to Rozelle. "We felt that with five people, It would be easier to reach a solution than with 28," Rozelle said. The unique solution was yet another stab at trying to break a stalemate that every minute was becoming more and more like the one that ended with a 33-year-old Rozelle, then the general manager of the Los Angeles Rams, getting the Job In 1960 as a compromise candidate after 23 ballots over 11 days.

This one has now held since July 6, when a faction led by Lynn and other members of what has become known as the "New Guard" blocked the election of Finks. A second selection committee then came up with four candidates and the insurgent group adopted the 48-year-old Tagllabue as Its candidate, somewhat ironically in that he has been close for years to Rozelle and members of the so-called "Old Guard-On Tuesday, Tagllabue Inched closer to the job, reaching 1 6 votes when Pittsburgh, Atlanta and, presumably, San Diego moved into his column. NFL spokesman Joe Browne said that the return of the Chargen and Raiders was to get all the teams represented and make It easier to get things done. General Manager Steve Ortmayer represented San Diego. Jeff Birren, the In-house counsel, represented the Raiders.

CLEVELAND (AP) Yet another committee was formed yesterday la an attempt to end a stalemate over the selection of a new NFL commissioner. This committee ts a five-member group that pits the prlndpal antagonists In the dispute In a face-to-face confrontation. The committee was formed after an evening meeting of labours that brought representatives of two teams winging all the way back from the West Coast The committee will be asked to present the owners with a unanimous choice of one of the two current candidates Jim Finks or Paul TagHnbue by next Wednesday, when yet another meeting is scheduled for Dallas. The committee will be chaired by Pittsburgh's Dan Rooney, one of the few neutrals left In a league that has spilt Into two blocs more or less along the lines of seniority In the league. A certified member of the league's "Old Guard." Rooney was originally for Finks, then abstained and finally voted for Tagllabue.

But the other four, whom Commis-tkner Pete Rozelle conceded were the prtnkpals in the stalemate that has blocked the election of his successor In about 50 hours of debate, were decidedly un-oeutraL On one side are Wellington Mara of the New York Giants and Art ModeU of Cleveland, both staunch Finks supporters who have borne the brunt of the resentment from the newer owners. On the other are Patrick Bowlen of Denver and Mike Lynn of Minnesota, two of the hard-line members of the group that blocked Finks" election "I saw he was open and I just went at him with the overhand right" said Poindexter. Manager Bob Dixon, who had also predicted a knockout for Poindexter, said the 27-6 MacDonald should consider retiring. "That old man ought to get him-self a rocking chair and retire," said Dixon. "He's had his turn and now ifs our turn." It was especially shocking because MacDonald had Just thrown a Jarring right which almost dropped Poindexter.

But Instead of going for the kill, MacDonald backed off. It proved to be a tactical error because seconds later, MacDonald was caught with a thumb betow the eye. "I was just getting loose," MacDonald said. "I had hit him a good shot and there was no sense in getting anxious. "I'm disappointed Tm surprised I was cut bad enough for the doctor to stop tt I'm shocked they stopped It" But Poindexter, now 5-1 In his first year as a pro, wasnt the least bit surprised.

"I Just listened to what Bob told me and It paid off tonight" said Poindexter, who then signed to fight Nashvillian Loren (The Boss) Ross on Nov. 21. Ross, now 9-0, captured a unanimous eight-round decision over hard-headed Trent Surratt of Knoxvtlle. Ross, who said he hit Surratt "with everything but the in July when it seemed all but certain. The five met into last night and the owners were to reconvene this morning.

Rozelle said there was a chance they would have a recommendation by then, but added: "that's unlikely." There was one vote taken yesterday In 6 hours of meetings. Tagllabue, the NFL's Washington lawyer and one of Rozclle's top aides, got IS votes. Finks, the president of the New Orleans Saints, got 1 1. Nineteen are needed for election. Then, around 3:30 p.m.

EDT, the meeting was adjourned for five hours so representatives of the San Diego Chargers and Los Angeles Raiders could return. The teams' owners, Alex Spanos and Al Davis, had left the meeting on Tuesday when Tagllabue ended with a 16-11 margin Spanos presumably being the extra vote. But the real division ts 12-1 1-5, with 12 for Tagllabue, 1 1 for Finks and five. Including Rooney, In a group that could float either way. The new committee will be the third to try to resolve the Impasse.

The first, which Included Rooney, ModeU and Mara, recommended Finks and only Finks although Taglia-bue also was among the finalists. But a group that Included Lynn and Bowlen among its leaders managed to get 1 1 votes that blocked Finks election on July 6. A second committee, which Included Mara and Lynn, then recommended four finalists, including Finks and Tagllabue. oldaaacfl. McmiU 77 Ceioitt M.Sa8M Im MM 1 m'" ma Tn After a two-year absence, WSDC-AM (980) will return as the flagship station for broadcasts of Nashville Sounds baseball games in 1990. Sounds president Larry Schmittou announced the switch from WRLT-AMFM yesterday at a press conference at Greer Stadium. "We are happy to be rejoining with WSK as our flagship station as we had a very favorable response when we were previously on WSTX," said Schmittou. "We think Ifs even more appropriate to be on WSDC since it has made a commitment to being the sports station In Middle Tennessee.

We are looking forward to a long relationship with (WSDC president and general manager) David Manning and the rest of the staff at WSDC" "Naturally we at WSDC are pleased to add to our all around sports image the return of the Nashville Sounds," said Manning. "The Sounds have proven to be highly successful and are committed In giving Nashville a winning team In 1990." WSDC was the Sounds flagship station from 1984 through the 1987 season. In addition to the 146 Triple-A Alliance games the Sounds will play, WSDC will carry an exhibition game between the American Association team and the parent Cincinnati Reds. As in the past, the format will call for a pre-game show starting 1 5 minutes before the regular contest But the format In 1990 will also include a segment featuring a player from one of the competing teams as well as the manager. Last year then-manager Frank Lucchesl was featured on the show six days a week and pitching coach Ray Rlppelmeyer the other "I just believe our fans would like to hear from players as well as the manager," said Schmittou.

Both Bob Jamison, Voice of the Sounds for 11 seasons, and colonnan Chip Walters will be offered positions on the 1990 broadcasts, Schmittou said. The club head said the Sounds hope to keep their affiliates at Springfield (WDBL), Carthage (WRKM) and White Bluff Dickson (WJKZ), along with adding a station or two for 1990. Incidentally, when the Sounds win their 66th game In 1990 it will give the franchise 980 victories. Schmittou also announced that he has presented "five or six names" to Cincinnati farm director Chief Bend-eras possible candidates for succeeding Lucchesl as Sounds manager, "but we will just have to wait and see first what the Reds da" Cincinnati is also without a manager, and, as a result the National League club's entire coaching staff is in limbo. The Sounds and Reds are also expected to be lively In the free agent field.

"There are a lot of them out there and most of those on our list are on everybody else's list" Schmittou said. Speaking of free agents. Yesterday, Jeff Sellers, the right-handed pitcher acquired by Cincinnati from Boston last winter with Luis Vasquez and Todd Benzinger in the Nick Esasky trade, signed with the Columbus Clippers, a New York Yankee farm club in the International league. Sellers spent the season on the Sounds disabled list after Injuring Us armtosprlngtraialng. r.
