"The block that Dennis Mix got was josja great individual effort absolutely super, And the Raiders weren't really trying-to block it. "We actually had a return caltea and I faked inside, then went back outsi0e; and the ball hit me right in the behind," Mix, the senior defensive end from Warren County who's being touted as the OVC'frDe-fensive Player of the Year by Donnelly. "We were really eager to even thingpP with them they won the first two ancHve won the last two," said Mix, one of a group of players who came to the school for Donnelly's first season. While Mix led the defense with 1 1 tackles, other standout efforts were turned in -by several Raiders, including preseason picks Emanuel Toles at tackle, aha.

James Griffin at safety; and two young players from Wilson County sophomores pan Allen and Gary Brooks. Allen finished with six solo tackles, an interception and aJutt ble recovery while Brooks had four solos three of the for losses. Middle Tennessee's team is idle this week, but that doesn't mean a week of rest forlhe Blue Raiders. This week's games find Eastern Kentucky at Central Florida in a non-league game, Akron is at Murray, Austin Peay hosts Tennessee Tech, Youngstown is at Morehead, and Akron at Murray in league games. gap to 20-17, but the league's No.l-ranked offense ground out two TDs before the end of the third quarter.

The two teams battled without scoring in the final period. "They get my vote for Number One," said "They certainly played well enough against us," he added. AMONG THE players for the Golden Eagles injured during the contest was senior running back Bazel, who was thought at first to have suffered a serious neck injury. "It turned out that there was no serious damage, but his status is very questionable for the remainder of the season. Nose guard Tim Ormond and offensive tackle Danny Templin also suffered injuries that are expected to bring their seasons to an early end.

Tech's date at Austin Peay this week will match up to of the most injury-plagued teams in the league. "Maybe at halftime we ought tp let our injured players have a game against their injured players," quipped wade, who spent most of spring practice in the hospital himself with gall bladder trouble. MTSU coach Boots Donnelly, meanwhile, was happy with his team's defensive performance against Western Kentucky including eight recovered turnovers and two blocked kicks. THE FIRST block, a Dennis Mix Special that resulted in a return touchdown by Albert Lane, was something Donnelly sais he had been counting on. By JOHN LEWIS PITTS Tennessee Tech's football team "played about as good as we can" before losing 34-17 to No.l-ranked Eastern Kentucky on Saturday, head coach Don Wade sa id yesterday.

The way the game turned out came as something of a surprise to Wade, who had figured his team would be hard-pressed to drive the football against the talented Colonels. "Every time we scored, it came on a drive, though, and when they made a mistake and gave us the ball where we might be able to do something with it, we couldn't move it," he reflected. THE LOSS was Tech's fifth in a row, dropping the Golden Eagles' record to 3-6. Eastern Kentucky's victory, their 17th in a row, assured the Colonels of yet another trip to the NCAA Division I-AA football playoffs. In other action, Middle Tennessee State topped non-league rival Western Kentucky 31-16 and Murray State spoiled Austin Peay's homecoming with a 21-7 victory.

Also, Youngstown State defeated Western Illinois 28-20 and Morehead State lost to Liberty Baptist 13-10. Akron was idle. WADE'S TEAM led 3-0 on a field goal by Franklin junior Ray Mullican, but Eastern surged ahead 10-3. The Golden Eagles tied it a 10-all in the second quarter on a touchdown pass from Mark Powers to Marvin McClennon, but the Colonels moved ahead 20-10 before the half. "You can't understand what it's like to get kicked in the mouth 1 1 years in a row." ALABAMA WOUND up with only 119 yards in total offense. "That really surprised me," said Stovall. "I had no idea our defense played that well in the first half." It was the third straight year that Walker wrecked Florida. As a freshman, in 1980, he rushed for 238 yards in a 26-21 victory and last year he rushed for 192 and scored all four of the Bulldogs' touchdowns in another 26-21 victory. Walker, with 1,413 yards this year despite the broken thumb that handicapped him the early part of the season, moved ahead of Ed Marinaro into fifth place on the NCAA career rushing list with 4,920 yards.

He needs 39 yards to move ahead of fourth-place George Rogers, the 1980 Heisman Trophy winner. WALKER SET two NCAA three-year records Saturday, his 936 carries topping former record-holder Marinaro and his yardage erasing Charles White's three-year mark. "Herschel showed us why he is the most dominant player in college football today," said Florida Coach Charley Pell. "The only way you can beat Georgia is to keep the ball away from Herschel that's how good he is." Walker had 107 yards and two touchdowns by the time the second quarter was barely two minutes old and Georgia was leading 27-0 when he retired for the day with 4:48 left in the third quarter. Bryant's seventh-ranked Crimson Tide had just lost, 20-10, to lOth-ranked Louisiana State Saturday. That, in itself, was bad enough, but it also marked the first time in six years that Alabama had lost two Southeastern Conference games the same season.

"When you go four games (loss to Tennessee, unimpressive wins over Cincinnati and Mississippi State and then the loss to LSU) and don't do any better than we've done, then you've got something wrong at the top," said Bryant, 69 and winner of 322 games in 38 years as a head coach. "I'M GOING to alert anybody that wants to know that we need to make some changes and we need to start at the top." Bryant, who this summer indicated he would like to have a hand in choosing his successor, said he would recommend that university president Joab Thomas "take inventory of what's going on and do something about it." Thomas' family said yesterday that he was in Washington and unavailable for comment and probably would be for several more days. THIS TIME last year it was LSU Coach Jerry Stovall who was the subject of retirement, and not by his choice, as the Bengals were struggling through a 3-7-1 campaign, their worst in 25 years. But after Alabama for the first time since 1970, LSU now stands 7-0-1 and is in the running for the Southeastern Conference championship and a berth in the Sugar Bowl. However, to reach those goals, the Bengals must have help from Auburn, which hosts Georgia next Saturday, and the way Georgia played on Saturday, those goals appear put of reach.

Auburn, which dumped Rutgers 30-7, still has a shot at the conference title, but the Tigers will need help just to claim a share of it. Auburn is 3-1 in the league going into Saturday's clash with Georgia, and the Tigers also must battle Alabama on Nov. 27. The help would have to come from Mississippi State, which entertains LSU this Saturday. THE GEORGIA at Auburn and LSU at Mississippi State clashes this week could settle the host berth in the Sugar Bowl game on New Year's Night.

The second-ranked Bulldogs, paced by Herschel Walker, who rushed for 219 yards and three touchdowns, destroyed 18th-ranked Florida, 44-0, and expect to move to the No. 1 spot in this week's national rankings since top-ranked Pitt was upset by Notre Dame. That left the race for No.l in this week's Associated Press poll looming as a three-way battle among second-ranked SMU, a 41-14 winner over Rice; No.3 Georgia, which thrashed No.20 Florida 44-0, and -fourth-rated Arizona State, which came from behind to turn back winless Oregon State 30-16. heels of the big three are sixth-ranked Nebraska, which walloped Oklahoma State 48-10, and No.7 Penn State, which buried North Carolina State 54-0. And don't overlook unbeaten-but-tied No.U LSU, the nation's top-rated defensive team, which throttled No.8 Alabama 20-10, a licking which Bryant termed "the best beating we've had since the '60s." Elsewhere, lOth-ranked Washington edged No.9 UCLA 10-7, No.12 Florida State swamped South Carolina 56-26, No.13 Clemson shaded No. 18 North Carolina 16-13, No.14 Oklahoma beat Kansas State 24-10, No. 15 Michigan defeated Illinois 16-10, No.

16 Southern California clobbered California 42-0, No. 17 West Virginia squeaked past Temple 20-17 and No.19 Maryland nipped Miami 18-17. Part of Notre Dame's heritage is upsetting No.l teams (see Georgia Tech, 1953; Oklahoma, 1957; Texas, 1970; Alabama, 1973 and 1974; Texas again, 1977, and now Pitt), "and that's what I talked to the players about," said Coach Gerry Faust. "I read off all the past upsets to them before the game." DURING THE GAME, Notre Dame erased a 13-10 fourth-quarter deficit on a 54-yard flea-flicker pass from Blair Kiel to Joe Howard and Allen Pinkett added insurance scores on runs of 76 and 7 yards, while' Notre Dame defense snapped Pitt quarterback Dan Marino's record streak of 19 games in which he had thrown a touchdown pass. After the game, Pinkett said this win will, go down in Notre Dame history This is a chance for us to hush lot of criticism and give us back our national respectability, this puts us back in the national bfc-ture."
