1 Kyan pride alive despite 0-5 record High school football leaders Mldstate high school football leaders are compiled through telephone reports of area coachec To report statistic call 259-8018 Saturday morning through noon Tuesday. EMS mm Pimr.ktttfl TO I I I 1 ANTI IONY rOI Spans Wrtltr For the record. Father Ryan's football tram is 0-5 beading Into this week's game at Montgomery Bell Academy. But, despite the record, the attitude on the Irish practice field Is 5-0. The players are Intense, upbeat And the enthusiasm doesn't level off until Ryan Coach Joe Drennan ends the workout with a shrill blast of his whistle shortly after 6:30 p.m.

It is obvious that despite the misfortunes of the earty going, there Is no quitting In this program which traditionally is one of the most successful which has 40 players, has only eight seniors. "We should be stronger next season, said Drennan. "Some of the guys who are playing now didn't get much time lost year when we had a lot of seniors. Next season they'll have gained some playing experience." Drennan says that Junior fullback Mark Flum has played welt as has first-year starting quarterback appropriately named Ryan Irvta "Ryan has done a real good job, particularly In light of this being his first year of really playing that position. He was a back-up last season, but he didn't play much." microcosm of their nod three contests, when Ryan had a chance to tie or win each game and failed with its final possession.

"I think the fad that we haven't been blown out or embarassed Is another reason for the good attitude," said Drennan, whose team is losing games this yev by an average of only six points. These kids practice as hard as any team in Nashville, and the coaches are dedicated." Ryan Is paced by junior running back Mario Leggs. Leggs Is one of the few upperclass-men on the Irish roster. The squad. in Tennessee high school football.

Irish Pride, the motto built on such success, remains intact In bad times. "The morale of the team Is good," said Drennan, who Is in his first year as head coach. "And everyone's attitude from the coaches all the way down has been great" Father Ryan's current record Is deceiving. The Irish are arguably the best 0-9 team In the area. They lost their first game of the year in overtime to Overton 6-0.

HAROLD I IUCC1NS Sports Wrtltr FAIRVIEW, Tenn. There are definitely some fair skies In Fairview. With Just 21 players, Fairview High has fashioned a 4-1 record at the midpoint of the high school football season, a Wg turnaround from 0-10 and 2-8 In 1 987 and "88, respectively. Keep In mind that this is a school that with the exception of its lone playoff season in 1 985, has enjoyed very little football success over the past 1 0 years. Fairview went 8-2 in 1 985, including its onry win over Woverty since district play began.

Fairview was also 6-4 and went to the Tobacco Dowl In '84. Fairview lone loss this season was a21-6 setback to Waverty In the second game. But the Yellow Jackets have shut out the other four opponents, Including the last three straight Latest was a 27-0 romp over McEwen last Friday, their first win over the Warriors since 1984. The biggest thing Is our players' total commitment to off-season weight lifting and 1 2 outstanding seniors," said second-year coach Phillip Wright who played one year of pro football with the old Memphis Showboats. "Another thing was a summer camp, NaCoMe, we attended In Centerville which had some fine teams In it After we did well in a couple of scrimmages, our players realized that 'bey, we can play with these added Wright who was an Ezeli-Harding assistant before arriving here The senior class has been super.

I kind of thought we'd be successful with the type of seniors we had returning. When we opened up our season and beat a good Page team, our guys gained a lot of confidence," said Wright 28. A big part of the success has to go to hard-running senior tailback Mark Marina The 5-foot-U, 190-pound Marino has rushed for 502 yards In 72 carries (7.0 yards per carry) and has scored six TDs, three in last Friday's Lawrence County wins district title Host Lavwence County rolled to the District 14 golf champlon6Wp yesterday, potting a297trx victory over Mount Pleasant at Liiwreoceburg Country Oub. The Wildcats, regular-Beason champions and the odds-on favor-lie in the tournament, were led by senior Chris Stutts, who shot a rvyo-under-par 68. Not onry was Stutts the medalist, but his leam-mates Carter Henson, Robert Duke and Rob ftwney claimed the Nos.2, 3 and 4 spots in the tournament.

Mount Pleasant cared a 348 with Columbia third at 356. Host Tuflahoma was also a comfortable winner in the District 1 1 tournament at the AEDC Course with a 308, 20 strokes ahead of runner-tip Marshall County. Tul-lahoma's Nick Shelton was the medalist with an even-par 75, two strokes In front of teammates Chuck Thomas and Mark Tebrucht The top two teems from the two tournaments and the top four Individuals who were not members of the first two teams at) advance to the region tournament Monday. And he's caught 1 2 passes for 90 yards. At linebacker, Marino has 37 tackles and 26 assists, one Interception and three fumble recoveries to lead the Jackets on defense, as well.

"He's one of the hardest working kids Fve ever seen, and we never have a bit of trouble out of him," Wright said. "He missed the last half of lost season with a deep femur bruise, but he worked hard on weights all summer and has come back strong. He gives it 1 00 all the time. His footwork Ls so good. He keeps his feet moving and hell make tacklers miss him all the time." "I remember my sophomore year we were 0-10," said Marino, also an outstanding linebacker, "and I missed the last half of myjunior year with the leg Injury.

But now we're coming up. The seniors have been unbelievable, and the weight program has really helped a lot As for whether I run Inside or out It really doesn't matter," Marino added. "Mark may be the best back we've had here since Danny Greer and the 1 0-0 team in 1979," said athletic director Jerry Christopher. "I think he's a genuine college prospect" Wright also said quarterback Gary Moore, who passed for 1,300 yards lost year and 300 so far this season, nose guard Stephen Skelton, Billy Cato and captain Jeff Bradford were some of the mainstays of the 21 strong. "Jeff really makes some hits that gets everyone fired up." Fairview has four juniors, two sophomores and three freshmen.

"Once our season started, we had a number of guys who wanted to beat that door down, wanting to play on the team and be a part of the success," Wright said, pointing to the coaches' door. Even with just 21 players, Wright said "no way." "I don't care how good they are, I didnt feel they were a part of this group which worked so hard in fall practice to get where we are." NOT SATISFIED: Hillsboro Coach Terry Anderson Isn't happy, nor upset, with the way his team is playing right now. "I thought we played fair past week," said Anderson. "We played not greet, and not bad. We didn't get an adequate feet for how we are playing.

It's hard to evaluate ourselves. Arrderson does know what he wants before the season is over. "We're wishing for a good game and to come out of the game kriowing we've played OK. We also wish for some good weather. "We're not standing out in any area." The Burros defense has shutout three of their opponents, and has yielded onry 17 points In five gamews this season.

According to Anderson, defensive tackle Butch Hayes and defensive end Jtjrmalne Sutton have played well all season for Hillsboro. FOCUSED Me Stratford coach Bobby Leach Is keeping all distractions from Interfering with his team's concentration for their upcoming game against McQavock. The Spartans, who are 4-1, have played wall defensively this season, but they haven't sparkled in their coaches eyes on offense. "I think we're playing pretty good defense," said Leech. "But just didn't play wetl and we didn't block on defense." "McGavock is certainly the best agreed to stay active until the player devlopment program Is Schmittou.

"Actually, he and Randy are flip-flopping positions." Schmittou said the 1990 season will begin April 6 with the Sounds tena-tjvely opening on the road. However, the schedule won't be available until Nov.l. The Alliance will follow the same format as it did during the past season, which means the teams will play a 146-game schedule, with 44 of them interleague contests. Last year, the IL compiled a 178-170 record in interleague competition after finishing on the short end of a 187-131 count in 1988. The Sounds were 24-20.

Tidewater general manager Dave Grim reminder for UT Tennessee notes KNOXV1UE Tennessee's 4-0 start Is the school's best since 1973 and the nine straight victories over the last two years Is the longest winning streak of Johnny Maiors' 13 years as Vol coach Defensive coordinator Doug Mathews says he expects reserve defensive end Dewayne Dot ton to be ready for action this weekend, lust three weeks after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery recent Injury casualties, the only player who may miss the game Is starting corner-back Keith Deneon The Impact of Demon's absence was lessened by the play of Mark Fletcher against Auburn. With Kelly Days switching to corner back, Fletcher started at strong safety and "played as well as anybody on the field," according to Mathews back Chuck Webb missed practice with an Intestinal Illness and Tracy Hayworth sat out the session with a minor back Injury but both are expected to be available for the Georgia game, which will be televised to a national cable audience via ESPN Georgia has thrown an average of 22.3 passes per game compared to Tennessee's 12.8 in a significant role reversal from previous years. "I'm going to tell that to the wide receivers that both of us are recruiting," said Georgia Coach Ray Goff. DAVID CUMER time but played poorly on offense In the second half. until the middle of the season." Defensive back Preston Warren refers to the dark days of 1988 as "spending two months in a hole, and nobody wants to slip up and fall back in there again." That appears to be the prevalent attitude this week as the Vols prepare for Saturday's 6: 10 p.m, CDT, homecoming game.

The players apparently have made a quick return to earth after last week's victory over Auburn. Now, it's Georgia on their mind. "This team appears to be very hungry and has a strong desire to improve. We've got to improve to beat Georgia," Majors said. While relying upon film of last year's game for motivation, the Vols will undoubtedly note several changes in this Georgia team.

The Bulldogs are under first-year head coach Ray Goff a former Georgia quarterback who has added a viable passing attack to the offense. Georgia attempted only 10 passes in last year's game with UT but has already thrown the ball 67 times in three games this season. "They have much more balance between the run and the pass," Majors said. "They're exploring the passing game more." Georgia posted solid wins over Baylor and Mississippi State before losing to South Carolina 24-20 last week. The Bulldogs led that game 17-14 at half- RobtMinunStat1 Fairview on the move.

they'll be facing their second good running back In two weeks. In their last game, the Raiders held Father Ryan's Mario Leggs to under 70 yards rushing. This week they'll be facing Anzio Gray, who rushed for more than 300 yards In one game two weeks ago. "We seem to be getting a steady diet of good running backs," said Elrod. "AM we can do is hope to stop Anzio.

He's a good one." OVERTON: The Bobcats are undefeated in league play, but will face a stiff challenge when they face Hill-wood. "This Is big game for us because they've already beaten the team that was supposed to win the district when they beat Hillsboro," said Overton coach Doug Millican. "They have more spped than anyone around. Every man on their defensive team runs a 4.8 or under, and they make up for a lack of size with that speed. They also have two of the better linebackers In the area." As far as Overton's team in concerned, Mulllcan says his team has been practicing well and has the right attitude.

"We're having some good practices," he said. "The players have realized that they have won only two district games and that there are four more to go. We're ust taking it one game at a time." 4,000 so we'd have something to show the committee when expansion talks come Pitcher Keith Brown and shortstop Freddie Benavides, both of whom had sub-par seasons, are the ony Sounds Invited to participate with Cincinnati's Instructional League team at Plant City, Fla. The Sounds' MVP, pitcher Jack Armstrong, who finished the season with the Reds, Is expected to work a week to 10 days at the complex on imporving his changeup. Jim Hoff is in charge of the camp.

Former pitching coach Wayne Garland has signed with the Fort Myers Sun Sox in the Senior Professional Baseball Association which will debut next month in Florida. Another ex-Sounds pitching coach, Pat Dobson, is manager of the Sun Sox Running back Mark Marino has dub that we've played, and their personnel Is big and strong." MCGAVOCK; The Raiders of McGavock are gearing up for their showdown with district rival Stratford. One of the top players for McGavock this season has been Tim Covington, who has been excelling from the tailback position. "He's been playing good football for us all season, and had a real good game last week," said head coach Was El rod. Other Raiders who've been on fire all year Include Jay Krenk, Kevin Lyons, Jason BtMKier.

Stove Boyd, William Wat-kins, Tim WorthM, Micky Hadocks, Brian Law, and Kevin Alton. "We're kist trying to get better each week," said Elrod. "This is socfi a big game for us because the winner might go to the playoffs and the loser might stay at home." Banji But may see some action against the Spartans. Bute was Injured in a preseason game against Hillsboro when he turned his ankle. He then hurt his other ankle while trying to come back a couple of weeks later against Peari-Cohn.

He's expected to be near full strength against the Spartans. Both teams enter the contest with 4-1 record. The game, however, also concerns the Raiders coaching staff because Rosenf elt was named to replace Schmittou on the National Association's executive committee. In turn, Schmittou, who will chair his last meeting of the cornmlttee during the World Series, was selected ciialrrnan of a committee to study realignment and expansion, which could come as early as 1991. Louisville was named host city for the 1991 Triple-A All-Star Game.

As previously announced, the 1990 game will be at Las Vegas. In other news Involving the Sounds: The Sounds sales staff is busily preparing for the 1990 season. Also at the meeting, Kandy Momey was named president of the American Association and commissioner of the Triple-A Alliance, and longtime executive Harold Cooper, who had earlier announced his retirement as cximmis-sloner of the Alliance, agreed to remain as IL president "Harold had planned to retire, but State's defense knows what's coming will not hamper the effectiveness of the shotgun offense. "After the first quarter, Alabama knew what was coming but they still weren't able to stop It," said Gromos. "In fact, we moved the ball better and better as the game went on.
