Johnny Butler's extra point gave the Tigers a 7-0 lead. 1 In the second quarter Memphis i State turned a midfield interception of a Mark Young pass into a 4 1-yard -Butler field goal. Another Butler field goal put Memphis State ahead 13-0 in the third quarter, then Ole Miss finally got on the scoreboard with a Bryan Owen three-pointer. The Tigers invade Dudley Field -Saturday night at 7:30 for the Commodores' season opener. It's a game Vandy desperately needs to win and, judging from last night's showing, Memphis State won't go quietly. Among last night's 64,187 Liberty Bowl spectators was an understandably unsmiling Vandy coach Watson Brown. "Memphis State is very, very quick on defense," said Brown who had pre- scored on a 26-yard keeper by Young to pull within six, 16-10, with 9:23 showing. Memphis State ran three plays and punted.

Ole Miss took over 77 yards away from the end zone and started its final, futile drive. Trail threw only seven passes, completing two for nine yards and the touchdown, He carried 12 times for 41 yards. Running back Charles White had 52 yards on 1 4 carries and fellow sophomore Wayne Pryor added 44 yards on 16 attempts. Ole Miss'Younghitonly 12of 26 passes, although at least six of the in-completions were actually dropped. Memphis State was out-gained in total yardage 304-177.

Texas fails to lasso Auburn QB KENDAL WEAVER Associated Press Miami defense rings Florida's Bell, 31-4 Gators swamped before national audience on runs by tailback Willie Goodloe from the one-yard line. He was nailed on his first attempt by linebacker Damon Young and stopped on the next game-deciding fourth-down play byMarkBowen. "It was a beautiful stand," said Vandy defensive coordinator Dick Hopkins, who accompanied Brown on the scouting party. (The Commodores play Ole Miss Oct. 24, hence two coaches were permitted to scout the two opponents.) "Those last two plays were remark-, able," added Hopkins.

"The defense played as fine a game as any coach could ever ask for." Memphis State turned two Ole Miss turnovers into a 1 0-0 half time lead. mmmmm Miami defensive end Daniel Stubbs A -7 dieted a Tigers upset over the 14-point favored visitors. "I thought they were one of the best defensive teams we played last year, and they look even better this time," added Brown. Memphis State's only victory last season came over Vanderbilt The Tigers won the game with a granite goal-line stand in the closing moments. Ole Miss, expected to be one of the stronger teams in the Southeastern Conference this season, had four tries from inside the seven with less than two minutes to play.

The Rebels' last two attempts came respect they believe they deserve, coming off a No. 2 national finish last year. He said the Hurricanes gathered Friday night and discussed this alleged lack of respect "We are ready," Irvin said. "A lot of people showed doubts about us. It really irked us We got together and showed we can play." Florida coach Galen Hall noticed.

"A lot of things happened today that I was afraid of," said Hall, who is 1-2 against Miami. "Our young receivers had problems. We dropped a lot of balls. Our young backs made some wrong cuts. We knew all this could happen against an outstanding football team such as Miami." "They dominated the football game," Johnson said of his defense.

Oddly, in this Hurricane romp, Florida scored first, taking a 2-0 lead on a safety. No. 6 LSU 17, Texas 3: Victor Jones scored short No. 15 touchdowns on consecutive carries in the first half and sixth-ranked LSU gave 34-year-old Mike Archer a successful head coaching debut by defeating No. 15 Texas 17-3 in College Station, Texas.

Archer, the youngest major-college head football coach in the country, replaced the oldest, 60-year-old Bill Arnsparger, who became athletic director at the University of Florida. Archer was LSU's defensive coordinator the last two years and the Tigers defense appeared strongep than ever, holding Texas to three first downs and 67 yards in the first half. It was 20th-ranked Florida's first television appearance since 1984, and most of the 77,000 people in the Orange Bowl and millions around the country would have to agree they could have waited even longer.

Kerwin Bell, the Gators' highly touted candidate to succeed Vinny Testaverde as the new Heisman Trophy quarterback, never even came close to his press notices, serving up three interceptions. He was 15-for-33 for 168 yards. He was sacked five times. In last year's Miami-Florida game, he was sacked seven times. He suffered a slight shoulder separation late in the game, but should be back without any problem.

"Well, this is a happy day, but this is a sad day, too," said Miami coach Jimmy Johnson of the 49th game between the rivals. "It's a sad day be- cause it's the last in the series for five years (Florida took action to drop Miami to concentrate on its Southeastern Conference schedule) That's quite sad. I'd love to see them again." Small wonder. i So would wide receiver Michael Ir-vin, who had two receptions, including a 65-yarder, and a host of Hurricanes, including sophomore quarterback Steve Walsh, who in is first collegiate start was 1 7-for-27 for 234 yards. Smith, exceptionally poised with only limited experience in the previous two seasons, completed 13 of 21 passes for 142 yards and two touchy downs, with no interceptions. AUBURN, Ala Fifth-ranked Auburn romped over Texas 31-3 in a college football season opener yesterday as Coach Pat Dye faced a problem he has rarely experienced in six seasons with the Tigers. Auburn, with a history of great running backs such as Heisman Trophy winner Bo Jackson, didn't generate much on the ground and had to turn -to the passing of quarterback Jeff Burger. Burger, who just recently was cleared of academic and NCAA wrongdoing, passed for 269 yards and two touchdowns.

"It sounds funny to say, but we must develop a running game to complement our passing game," Dye said. The victory by Auburn spoiled the debut of Texas' new head coach Da- vid McWilliams, who was hired after last year's 5-6 record, the Longhorn's first losing season in 30 years. "We had four crucial turnovers in the first half and two gave Auburn touchdowns," McWilliams said. "The, Auburn defense controlled the line of scrimmage most of the game." Auburn, its newly expanded stadium holding an estimated 80,000 fans, relied on Burger's arm as the fifth-year senior completed touchdown passes of 22 yards to Vincent Harris and 49 yards to Alexander Wright. He also made key completions that set up all the other points.

"I had a lot of weapons on the field today," Burger said. ''There's been a big turnaround in the quality and number of receivers since I came to Auburn." No.20 Georgia 30, Virginia 22: Lars Tate rushed for 218 yards and scored touchdowns on runs of 28 and 44 yards as No. 20 Georgia overcame a 1 4-0 deficit to down Virginia 30-22 in Athens, Ga. It was the 1987 college football opener for both teams. Tate, who had 28 carries, became the first Georgia back to reach the 200-yard mark since former Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker had 219 against Florida in 1982.

A crowd of 73,676 fans turned out at Husky Stadium and saw Chandler, a senior, complete 18 of 31 passes with two interceptions. His main target was Darryl Franklin, who hauled in the third-quarter TD pass and had eight receptions for 209 yards. Stanford played most of the game without star tailback Brad Muster, who sprained his left ankle in the opening quarter after three carries or a net of minus-2 yards.

No.9 Clemson 43, Western Ca rolina 0: Ninth-ranked Clemson got its 92nd football season started quickly by scoring on six of its eight first-half possessions in a 43-0 opening win over visiting Western Carolina. Freshman tailback Terry Allen scored twice and David Treadwell kicked three field goals on a rainy afternoon at Memorial Stadium. All but one of Clemson's first-half scoring marches began inside Western Carolina's 32-yard line two after long punt returns, two after fum ble recoveries and the other following aDiocKedpunt. "Smith was phenomenal," said Curry. "There's Jbeen a lot of speculation about him and his starting.

He displayed poise, accuracy and proper, use of our audible system. He had an extremely good day." Smith passed for two touchdowns and directed a fumble-free offense. Alabama, said Southern Coach Jim Carmody, "is as good or better than they were last year." He said Alabama "reloads every year. They graduate all of those good seniors and they don't rebuild. They reload." Curry said he was proud of his team.

"It's most obvious that we have some fine players," he said. "They were here when we got here." Curry succeeded Ray Perkins after the re I' 1IOYT HARWELL Associated Press BIRMINGHAM, Ala Bill Curry, with major help from Bobby Hum-, phrey and David Smith, broke in suc-fc. cessf ully yesterday in the high-pres-l sure job as Alabama's head football coach. "It was a good start, but it was only a start," he said after the Crimson Tide defeated Southern Mississippi 38-6 in the season-opener for both teams. 1 Alabama has to travel to Penn State next Saturday to play the de- fending national champions.

"Humphrey did what he always seems to do," Curry said after the jun-1 ior tailback scored twice on runs and once on a pass. Paterno's 200th win one of several routs in top 20 cruiting season was well under way last winter. After Alabama took a 7-0 lead on a 16-yard pass from Smith to David Whitehurst, Humphrey scored on a 1 0-yard run and on a 43-yard pass play. Philip Doyle added a 22-yard field goal as the Crimson Tide took a 24-0 halftimelead. Gene Jelks, converted from runner to defensive back, put the Crimson Tide in position for its first touchdown by intercepting Ailrick Young's pass and returning it 31 yards to the South-ern26.

Runs by Humphrey and Bo Wright put it on the 16, and Smith, successor to Mike Shula, hit Whitehurst, who made a diving catch in the end zone. A Cnaeh Joe Paternn Coach Joe Paterno, whose Penn State teams in recent years lived by defense, showed something new on the occasion of his 200th coaching victory. His 1 lth-ranked Nittany Lions auditioned an explosive offense in beginning defense of their national college football championship with a 45-19 rout of outmanned Bowling Green.

Most of the damage was done with big plays as Paterno, 200-44-2, became the ninth major-college coach to reach 200 wins. Michael Timpson returned a punt 63 yards for a touchdown and Blair Thomas turned a screen pass into a 67-yard "I'm thinking of 201. Alabama is a fine football team," Paterno said, looking ahead to Saturday's game against the Crimson Tide. As for No. 200, "It's a great honor for our Paterno said.

I am proud to have worked with hundreds of wonderful people who have enriched my life beyond dreams." Paterno, in his 22nd year of coaching, also was pleased with his big play attack: "We can score at any time." Penn State fell behind 7-3 in the first period of its 1987 opener, but rallied for four touchdowns in the second period to take a comfortable 31-161eadathalftime. Penn State extended the nation's longest major-college winning streak to 13 games and its regular-season think they're just as explosive as they were last year." Oklahoma Coach Barry Switzer, however, said he is used to better execution by his teams. The Sooners fumbled six times, losing two and was penalized 10 times for 75 yards. "We were a ragged football team today," Switzer said. But the Sooners took off early as safety David Vickers intercepted a Bron Beal pass on the first play of the game and returned it 29 yards to the North Texas 5.

Two plays later, fullback Lydell Carr scored the first of his two touchdowns. No.2 Nebraska 56, Utah State 12: It wasn't exactly enough for Nebraska Coach Tom Osborne that his second-ranked Cornhuskers rolled up 603 offensive 'yards and 205 more on kick and inter-ception returns in a 56-12 opening rout of Utah State. He was particularly upset with turnovers. Nebraska lost the ball five times, three on fumbles and two on interceptions. "I wasn't real impressed.

I chewed the players out at halftime," Osborne said. "I didn't think we had played well. We had not earned a whole lot of offensive points. I told them at the end of the game they had played fair." Running back Keith Jones ran for three touchdowns, and junior Steve Taylor ran for two more while setting.
