6C THE TENNE5SEAH ThurwUy MAY 24. 1990 Sounds sweep double-header with Tidewater LARRY TAFT Sports Writer NORFOLK, Va. Nashville Sounds Manager Pete Mackanin sat in front of his clubhouse locker, shook his head and asked rhetorical ly: "How do you figure this stuff out?" It was a natural question for Mackanin following his club's 1-0 and 4-1 sweep of the Tidewater Tides last night before an announced crowd of 2,786 at Met Park. Nashville had entered the double-header as loser of eight of its last 1 2 games. It had shown a little spark by winning two of three at Richmond over the weekend after losing three in a row at Buffalo And last night, it looked remarkably like the team that had won eight of 1 0 before hitting the mid-May skkL Nashville won with excellent pitching last night Rob Lopez fired a three-hitter in the opener.

Then in the nightcap Luis Vasquez, just activated off the disabled list, came on to pitch four innings of two-hit, one-run basebalL Kip Gross, making his relief debut for the Sounds, was near-perfect for two innings as be notched his fourth victory. And to top off the night, Bob Sebra picked up his Triple-A Alliance leading 11th save with a perfect seventh inning. Another way to win is get big defensive plays. Nashville benefited from two season-highlight plays in the opener. In the sixth inning Tidewater's Mike DeButch ripped a double down the left-field line.

Chris Jones dived for the ball, missed, ran it down in the corner and fired a one-hopper to Brian Lane at third, who tagged DeButch out In the seventh the Tides' Kelvin Torve singled with one away. Darren Reed followed with a line drive to straightaway right field which Sounds' outfielder Skeeter Barnes leaped and snared just as it appeared that Reed had a two-run, game-winning homer. "I've never made a catch that good as an outfielder," Barnes said. "I went back and knew I was close to the wall and jumped for the balL It hit in the top of my glove, which was up above the wall If I hadn't caught it, it would have been a home run." Nashville's lone run in the first game was unearned. Brian Lane singled, took third when the throw on Lopez sacrifice bunt attempt was thrown into centerfield and scored on Leo Garcia's sacrifice fly.

Lopez, not a starter at the start of the year, continued to dazzle. "I threw strikes in the bullpen when I was warming up, and I took it to the mound," Lopez said. "I couldn't get my knuckleball over much, but everything else was fine. Tlirowing strikes that's the difference in winning and losing." And it was in the second game too, especially for Vasquez, coming back from an elbow injury. "My arm tired in the third and fourth innings, and my curveball was never good," Vasquez said.

"But I threw strikes most of the time with my fastball. Then Kip and Bob came in and finished up." Instead, he was in the first-base coaching box and will start torrrrow when the Sounds open a nine-game homestand with a 7:30 so. game with the Richmond Braves.

Brown has moved back a day in the starting rotation, yielding his spot in the order to Luis Vasquez. And Brown will take the spot left vacant by the move of Kip Gross to the bullpen. Some might wonder why a successful starter like Gross, whose 3-1 record and 3.94 earned run average are among the best on the staff would be taken out of the rotation and put in the bullpen. Nashville pitching coach Ray Rip-peimeyer has the answers. "With Vasquez ready to go into the starting rotation, somebody had to go to the bullpen," Rippelmeyer said, "and I felt Kip would benefit more from that experience than anyone because I feel that the best chance he has to make it to the major leagues is as a relief pitcher." Gross pitched out of the bullpen after being called up to Cincinnati on April 20.

"He told me he was surprised that he was put back in our starting rotation when he came down," Rippelmeyer said, "but we had just lost a starter Scott Scudder and that's where we needed him." Rippelmeyer said he will work with Gross in making the transition. "It'll take an adjustment on his part," Rippelmeyer said. "He won't have the time to warm up that he's been having. "He'll have to get used to coming in with men on base and not getting as much time to warm up and pitching with as many days rest as he has been. If he is successful, it'll benefit him and benefit our club, too.

"We're going to give Kip all the work he can handle out of the pen," Rippelmeyer continued, "and we're going to give Vasquez a chance to see what he can do. Before I made the move, I checked with Pete Sounds manager Pete Mackanin and with Cincinnati. No one had any objections, so that's the path we're going to follow for now." "I like the pen," said Gross. "You can just go out and throw everything you've got from the start I remember that much from when I relieved in college." larrytaft i Exterior Gloss Latex House Trim Paint Exterior Flat '( Latex House Trim Paint Nocess 21)10 DeBufchst 3 Garciacf 2011 Grdner2 3011 Barnes rl 3 0 00 Gonutt! 3001 30 10 3l( 3011 Lodthena 3 000 Torve 10 Scone 3010 Reed rl Tanner lb 3 0 0 0 Dial cf Jones 3010 Mercadac Lane 3b 3 110 Thornton Lonez 1 0 0 0 Valera a Popular ior trim doors, resists peeling Mistering.
