Bearden Super 16: The unbeaten TOM WOO!) Shrls Writer PROVIDENCE, R.I. For 20 mirutes, Austin Peay's basketball team was sharp, crisp, ready to plav. Then the bottom fell out, leaving the visiting Governors a 105-99 loser to Providence here last night. Trailing 49-47 at halftime. Providence came out smoking to outscore Austin Peay 15-2 in the first four minutes of the second half and went on to win.

"We quit playing defense in the second half and gave up too many three-pointers. We just didn't get after them," said APSU Coach Lake Kelly, whose team is now 4-6 overall heading into a date at high-scoring O'Juhoma next Monday. Providence, now 6-3, actually out-scored Peay 18-2 if you included a desperation three-point basket at the end of the first half. It was after this, said first-year Providence Coach Gordon Chiesa, that the Friars went into the locker-rocm and made several key adjustments. "We changed the look of our press to a man-to-man defense instead of the zone press," said Chiesa.

"We got several three-pointers and had a good stretch to take charge of the game." Providence canned 1 1 of 23 three-point attempts, including thive in that early second-half run. Quinton Burton had two of them an! Eric Murdock the other. "Murdock and Burton took charge of the game," said Chiesa. "But I was very impressed with Austin Peay's intensity and the way thry kept coming back. I'm a big fan of nke Kelly and for us to get 105 points against a very good defense impresses the heck out of me." Murdock led the Friars with 26 points, hitting 1 1-16 from the field including 4-6 from long-range.

Burton chipped in 21, with an 8-1 1 performance from the field. Delray Brooks added 19 and Girlton Screen was 10-10 at the line to finish with 1 6 poiinLs while Darryl Wright dumped in 10 off the bench. Austin Peay, which nearly doubled its 55-point output at Toledo last week, was led in scoring by senior forward Andre Harris, the transfer from Indiana who had 25 points and 12 rebounds. Tony Raye, the Gallatin senior and lone starter from last year's NCAA Tournament team which met Providence in the second round, fired in 23 points and claimed 10 rebounds despite fouling out with 5:59 left. And Barry Sumpter, the senior transfer from Louisville, scored in 20 points but managed only three rebounds for Austin Peay while Keith Rawls added 13 points off the bench.

APSU won nearly every statistical battle, except the three-point shooting and the final score. While Providence canned 1 1, while Peay made only three of 1 4 attempts. Vincent Brooks was 1-8 from the three-point range and 1-1 1 on the night for the Governors. Except for the lack of long-range bombing, Peay outrebounded the Friars 42-39 and outshot Providence as well. Peay was 37-78 (47.4) from the field and 22-30 at the line while the hosts managed 32-67 (47.8?6) from the field and 30-38 at the free throw line.

Raye, Austin Peay's inspirational leader, said the team is getting closer to playing as a unit. "We're still struggling," said Raye. "If we get the inside game going like we did tonight then the outside game isn't clicking. We need to get a good combination of both." I points from Terrence Hughes and defeated Tullahoma in the boys semifinals of the Middle Tennnesse Invitational Tournament last night 73-68. Glencliff boys crushed Mount Ju liet with 70-64 win behind Butch Hines' 21-point performance.

The host Lebanon girls advanced to the finals with a 45-40 win over rival Mount Juliet and Beech beat Glencliff in the other girls semifinal game 58-41. Northwest Civitan: Sophomore Ju lie Powell fired in 20 points as Cannon County trounced Hillsboro 75-46 in the semifinals of the Northwest Civi tan at Whites Creek High School. Can non County, now 10-0, meets Pearl- Cohn tonight at 7 in the girls champi- oaship.

Maplewood got 30 points from Walter Whitworth as the Panthers beat University Heights 72-64 in the boys semifinals. Hunters Lane Classic: Clarksville's Henry Thompson burned the nets for 35 points as the Clarksville boys slipped by host Hunters Lane 74-70 in overtime. Jason Word scored 20 and helped Hunters Lane tie the score at the end of regulation at 64-all. Hend-ersonville eased by the Dickson County boys 78-71 as Brent Cothron led the way with 17 points. The Clarksville girls squeaked by Hunters Lane in double-overtime with a 73-71 victory.

Melissa Atkins and Tara Mosley combined for 42 points for the winners who rallied back in the second half to knot the score 59-59 at the end of regulation. "We would like to get on a station with a stronger signal or get a network system that would cover the 100 mile radius of our ballpark," Schmittou said. "At one time, we had 13 stations on our network, and it was during those days that we had our best attendance." WSIX has carried Sounds games for the past three years.

Last season, Duncan Stewart, the station's sports director, was the color analyst at home games for play-by-play announcer Bob Jamison. uOti iAl.
