The weight scales will be set up in area Kroger stores Saturday and Sunday, just like earlier in the Rotation Diet effort This weekend marks the end of the diet's eighth week, and organizers view the weigh-in as a way to gauge the progress in the "melt a million" campaign.

But besides manning the scales, diet volunteers also will be distributing such other Rotation-related Information as A 600-calorie celebration menu, featuring a choice of baked salmon in foil with peas, baby onions and wild rice or London broil with three squash casserole and baked potato. Recipes are included, along with suggestions fdr a fine wine and dessert, "The idea is that after eight weeks on the diet here's a chance for people to have a great meal as a way of celebratingand without gaining weight," said George Schnitzer, spokesman for diet creator Martin Katahn and Vanderbilt University which is coordinating the effort A handout on the importance of physical activity, with comparisons on the effect of different types of exercise plus tips and advice on incorporating exercise into a sedentary three-week period, promising an average of a pound a day weight loss if followed. It is followed by a one- to two-week "maintenance" period be "Diet alone," the handout states, "is not the key to lifetime slimness and good health." Part of the Rotation Diet is to exercise the equivalent of walking 45 minutes a day. Pledge cards to be filled out for proof in the Guiness Book of World Records community-wide weight loss category being created as a result of the Rotation Diet Registration and pledge collection envelopes for the April 27 March of Dimes "Walk Across America" walkathon. Katahn has strongly promoted the walkathon to Rotation Dieters as a way of putting "their new healthy lifestyle to work for the benefit of those less fortunate The Rotation Diet emphasizes exercising, and this is an excellent way of doing that exercising and at the same time doing something worthwhile for the community, too." Local March of Dimes walkathon organizer Jimmie Cooper says a goal of $100,000 has been set for this year's 10-mile event compared to the $87,000 raised last year.

The walkathon starts at 10 am. at Vanderbilt University's Dudley Field, with registration at 9 am There will be six checkpoints along the course where food, water and minor first aid will be available. The course winds through downtown before ending at Dudley Field. "Dr. Katahn approached us about people on the Rotation Diet participating," Cooper says.

"We're quite pleased the diet has been very popu? tar, and this is an excellent way of informing people about what we're trying to do and getting more people involved." Some 76,000 Rotation Diet brochures have been distributed, with organizers projecting each being copied about six times. They estimate some fore beginning a new rotation, if de sired. The diet recommends exercise, drinking eight glasses of water a day, and includes unlimited quantities of certain vegetables and up to three servings a day of a "safe fruit" all without changing the body's metabol ic rate. 75,000 people are on the diet in the Nashville area, and that after the first four weeks half a million pounds had been lost To keep the momentum going, Katahn appears each Tuesday on WSMV-Channel 4's "Channel 4 Magazine" to offer advice and encouragement The local success of the diet has spawned plans for a national campaign, set to begin In early May through grocery stores across the country. Katahn also has been approached by communities in Canada, Australia and Great Britain to organize similar community-wide weight loss programs.

The country-wide plans coincide with the early May release of Ka-tahn's book, The Rotation Diet He has authored two other best-selling diet books, The 200 Calorie Solution (1982) and Beyond Diet (1984). In addition, The Rotation Diet Companion, a videotape for home use, will be released about the same time. Available in VHS or beta format the tape will feature Katahn providing instruction, hints to better diet and exercise, recipes and 21 daily motivational tips.
