But it's an important step for him and eight other east Nashville young people without a lot of money but with college ambitions. "This is all legit.

There's nothing like this when you're earning money on the streets, where you have to worry about people tak'ng the money away from you," said Moore, 18, who deposited $40. "It's a great opportunity for people like me to save for college." Moore and other selected teens got help in opening accounts at AmSouth Bank by Community an east Nashville-based program that aims to increase educational and economic opportunities for youth. The program, called Success Checks, matches each bank deposit up to $40 per month with $120. That three-to-one rate of return is the kind of incentive that Community IMPACT! hopes will keep motivating teens to save. "This is a way to send a message that there are opportunities for you out there," said John Hilley, of Community IMPACT! "It increases their sease of optimism.

The fastest way to get someone out of poverty is not just to give them more income but to increase their assets the most important of which is self-esteem. We think this does that." The program also requires the teens to take part in an eight-week financial literacy training course and to update the group on the status of their savings. "We think it's important that young people begin saving and to teach young people about savings, investing and financial services, something that many times is not taught in the classroom," said Latr-Lsha Stewart, community director of AmSouth Bank. Two branches of AmSouth and two other area bankers are helping to sponsor the program, the first of its kind in Tennessee. First Tennessee Bank committed $30,000 and Firststar kicked in $25,000 for the first two years.

The bank accounts are at AmSouth. For information, call Hilley at 500-7584. Moore said the bank account which will grow to $1,920 in a year if he saves $40 per month was a "gift" although he must earn all he deposits. He Is grateful for Community IMPACT! and all the adults who have helped him. "I'm not afraid to say that when I was younger I got up in what I call the hype, running the streets.

I wouldn't trade it for anything now because I feel like I learned from it. I feel like I can accomplish anything as far as not being a statistic, as far as being in jail and locked up. The money you make on the street is a curse. This is my future." Anita Wadhwani covers general assignments and Nashville communities. Contact her at 259-8821 or STKI 403455 39.57 1st Mo.
